KZN breeders based in Nottingham Road, Rathmor Stud, topped the buyers list at the CTS Premier Yearling Sale –purchasing 13 lots for a total of R6 725 000. Although this is a private initiative by the farm, it is part of a greater drive by the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association of SA, to encourage transformation at all levels within the stud farm industry. “This gives our staff equity in the business and a tangible stake in the results from a sale”, says Warwick Render of Bush Hill Stud.

A respected business lady in Johannesburg who also owns a farm in the beautiful Birnamwood area outside of Howick, Ms Mlonzi made the news when she sold her Master Of My Fate filly, Master Keys, at the National Yearling Sale in 2017 for R100 000 to Nathan Kotzen, becoming the first black lady to do so in the history of the National Yearling Sale. Brave Tin Soldier’s smart daughter and Gr1 winner Brave Mary, second in the Emperors Ready to Run Cup, is headed to quarantine at Kenilworth in advance of a long trip through Mauritius to France in late February. KZN-bred Anna Pavlova made the trip to France at the end of October for Team Valor.

Gr1 Middle Park Stakes winner Crusade has had his third winner at the Vaal this afternoon, with Roski-bred Onamission, a juvenile filly out of Gr2 winner Tempted, finding victory over 1200m by almost two lengths.
Once again KZN broodmares were in demand at the Backworth Stud Dispersal Sale with most of them sold beyond the borders of KZN, which included stock from Summerhill and Janet Baker Properties. Noble Tune sold the top priced yearling.

Bloodstock South Africa held their Shongweni Mixed Sale on Wednesday and it was very pleasing to see the very wet conditions didnt deter a full house of buyers from attending. The sale opened with the broodmares and saw Lot 2, the beautifully-bred and performed Felix The Cat sold to Welcome Home Farming for R200 000….
The top seller of the day was an outstanding Await The Dawn colt out of Dignify by Rambo Dancer, beautifully named Genesis, he sold as Lot 65 to Nchakha Moloi who has an eye for selecting top horses – one of whom is his own Gr2 winning filly, Heaps Of Fun.
Our province of KZN produces less than 1100 of 5000 foals nationally – based on those stats, our KZN horses won five races yesterday at Turffontein including a Gr3 and filling second and third too. Matador Man (Scott Bros) and Chilli Con Carne (Just As Well) placed in the Gr3 Tony Ruffel Stakes, whilst Rathmor’s Romany Prince finished third in the Wolf Power 1600 Listed. Six of the eight races carded at Greyville just the night before were won by KZN Breeders – and it was a double for Bush Hill Stud sire King’s Chapel who had Cup King and Mr McSteamy to both win in a gutsy fashion, whilst Roski produced a five length maiden winner at Kenilworth yesterday.

The top priced colt from KZN on the third and final day of the National Yearling Sale came from Clifton Stud when a beautiful Crusade colt sold for R350 000, whilst the top-priced filly of the final day came from Piemonte Stud for R200 000 as Lot 410.
Day 2 of the National Yearling Sale yielded very pleasing results, in particular for Bush Hill Stud who sold the top-priced KZN colt to date with a magnificent son of Kahal out of Plutonium by Muhtafal, for R650 000 whilst Rathmor’s Eightfold Path filly sold for R325 000.
KZN’s top selling colt of the day came from Bush Hill Stud – an immaculately-bred Oratorio colt out of Felix The Cat by Black Minnaloushe, knocked down to Garth Puller for R400 000, whilst St Helier Stud’s breathtaking grey Crusade filly sold for R300 000.
