KZN-breds Bring Home The Bold Black-Type

Love Struck, Knock On Wood and Las Ramblas brought home the Bold Black Type over the weekend at Kenilworth, Turffontein and Scottsville respectively – Love Struck in the Breeders Cup Politician Stakes Listed, and Knock On Wood in the London News Gr 3 (which saw the first three past the post all being KZN-breds) and Las Ramblas in the Michael Roberts Handicap Listed. All three horses won over 1800m.

Image: Gold Circle Three year old Summerhill-bred gelding Love Struck, by Kahal out of Particular Passion by Rambo Dancer, won the Politician Stakes from Ze Kaiser and Silvano’s Jet by a neck on Saturday. Ridden by Anton Marcus and trained by Paul Lafferty, Love Struck carried top weight of 58kgs, jumping from Stall one.

Owned by The Fire Racing Trust’s Alesh Naidoo (Gold Circle’s Racing Personality Of The Year), Mr Jason Moodley & Ms L Salsone, this is the gelding’s fourth win from 11 starts, placing three times including third to The Hangman in the Gr 1 Premier’s Champion Stakes, and winning the Guineas Trial Listed at Clairwood in November from Wind Trip (by Trippi) by almost two lengths.

A R260 000 National Yearling Sale graduate, Alesh Naidoo recently purchased full-sister Isthandosami for R375 000 from the Emperor’s Palace Ready-to-Run sale at the end of last year. This is the family of Thandolwami and Gr 1 winning Anytime Baby.

Knock On Wood, winner of the inaugural KZN Breeders Million Mile last year, was victorious in the London News Stakes Gr 3, ridden by Nooresh Juglall (57.5 kgs) and trained by Ormonde Ferraris yesterday.

Bred by George Rowles at Ivanhoe Stud, the five year old son of Muhtafal won by 1.25 lengths followed by KZN-breds Shogunnar (Solskjaer – bred by Mr F Tarbitt) and E-Jet (Jet Master – bred by Scott Bros) from draw 13.

Knock On Wood has now earned over R1-million in stakes. A R140 000 Sibaya Yearling Sale graduate, he is out of Kiss Me Kate by Rocky Marriage. Knock On Wood descends from an incredibly strong dam-line, this is the immediate family of recent L’Ormarins Queens Plate Gr 1 winner Variety Club, Rhythmically, Secret Rites, Novenna and Monastery. Las Ramblas, by Toreador out of Silent Kiss(NZ) by Maroof, took home the Michael Roberts Handicap Listed on Sunday at Scottsville. Trained by James Goodman and ridden to victory by Muzi Yeni, she won by half a length from Orbit War(ARG) and Top Mark(BRZ), and Knight To Remember (by The Sheik) finishing fourth.

Las Ramblas is bred by Miss Glynis van der Merwe, and took home the KZN Breeders Award in 2011 for Outstanding Three Year Old Filly.

The five year old mare has now had five wins for owners Mesdames V G Koterba & D Chetty & Messrs J M Goodman, L M Nestadt & J R van der Linden, and placed 12 times including second to Igugu(AUS) in the SA Fillies Classic Gr 1 – and second again to Princess Of Light in the Gr 2 Gold Circle Oaks. Las Ramblas is a half-sister to Frusk, a three-time winner who also placed in the Gr 3 Winter Derby.
