Sunday at Summerveld Training Centre saw Gold Circle host the second leg of their Gold Circle CSI Soccer Pools initiative – the Groom’s Wafa-wafa Knock-out Cup, which saw Yellow Star Stud from Mooi River join the 12 other teams in the league for the first time – the teams made up of grooms from Clairwood, Summerveld and Ashburton.

Under unusually warm weather for winter, hundreds of spectators turned out to support their teams for the day in an electric atmosphere.

Yellow Star Stud opened their first match with a 2-0 victory over the Shining Stars from Summerveld. Dominating territory and possession, Yellow Star Stud had five goal attempts in the first half, scoring two which saw Yellow Star go through to the next round to play New Standard. The game drew 2 all – drawing with New Standard but unfortunately losing the penalty shoot-out.

New Standard went through to the finals and were beaten by the overall winners of the tournament, Swallows taking it by 1-0. The organisers from Gold Circle have said that they envisage four tournaments a year to take place which will see 16 teams in total.

Summerveld is the base ground for the tournament and Gold Circle invite any of the breeders who would like to send teams through from their farms to join in, they will be more than welcome! Contact candiesem@goldcircle.co.za for more information.
