Backworth-bred Devonella (Kahal – Devon-Sent by Northern Guest) won well over 1200m at Clairwood Sunday under a confident ride from jockey Julius Mariba for trainer Ivan Moore.

A grand-daughter of the great Durban July (1984) winning mare, Devon Air(GB), this win takes the Devonella’s career record to 4 wins and 8 places from 27 starts for earnings of R229,199.

Devon Air(GB) was voted ARCSA Champion Stayer and she had 6 wins including the Rothmans July Handicap Grade 1, Jockey Brand Gold Cup Grade 2, Republic Day Handicap Grade 3, third in the J&B Met Grade 1 and fourth in the Hoover Fillies Mile Grade 3.

She also achieved a record by being the most expensive broodmare at the time to be sold in South Africa, for R500 000.

Devonella is a half-sister to Devon Lady, a three-time winner who produced another Backworth-bred winner by Miesque’s ApprovalDevonesque, owned by a syndicate including race commentators Craig and Sheldon Peters.

The immediate family contains the likes of Cream of The Crop, a 5-time winner including the Chairmans Handicap Grade 3, as well as Topsational with 5 wins; second in the Gosforth Park F&M Handicap Grade 3, KwaZulu Natal Breeders Ch(L), fourth in the Premiers Cup Grade 1 and Victorina(GB), a Champion 3 year old in Germany with 8 wins – both in Germany and England.

Congratulations to owners Messrs Daubern and Moore.
