Backworth Stud is a boutique Thoroughbred Horse Breeding establishment, situated near Eston, in the Southern Drakensberg, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa.
Born out of a passion to work with some of man’s most noble animals, Keith Russon and Ian Todd established the breeding operation in 2000, and it is currently managed by Johan Alberts.
Keith and Ian originally kept Backworth as a weekend retreat. In 1999 the decision was made to develop a Boutique Thoroughbred Stud, and the property was put under pasture and stables and facilities were developed to house their own private band of Broodmares and their progeny.
Backworth is a very special place – a sentiment borne out by those owners, trainers and friends, who have visited us and enjoyed our outstanding hospitality. The Backworth Stud livestock benefit from Keith’s 40 years’ experience in the breeding game, a veterinary background, and horse blood that flows through his veins.
Backworth Stud extends over 26 hectares (65 acres) with paddocks under Kikuyu pasture with post and rail fencing, shade is provided by magnificent plane, liquid amber, and oak trees and 25 Stables of which 15 are large foaling boxes. Strict horse management regimes are followed, with twice daily controlled feeding and temperaturing, allowing management opportune detection of any imminent problems. Knee high dip is used daily for tick prevention against Babesiosis and Piroplasmosis. A Velox Walker is used in Yearling Preparation and Mare Fitness Program. Backworth has a horse to staff ratio of 5:1.
As a Stud in its infancy, Backworth are extremely proud of their Racing Statistics, from a small band of Broodmares, they consistently produce a high percentage rate of Individual Winners to Runners – averaging 61.54%, and Individual Placed Horses average of 81.54%. Backworth Stud’s credentials include Grade 2 Winner FIRST AGAIN – 23 starts for 8 wins and 13 places; CHOCOLICIOUS – Winner of the Grade 1 Allan Robertson Championship; and we have bred multiple winners – GLIDING HIGH, HEDONIST, FAIRE LA FETE, PRIVATE COLLECTION, AQUAVIT, MOGUL, MISS CHARLIZE, RAMBO’S FANTASY.
