Press Release: Plum For Plumtree

We all know John Plumtree, who’s just about as good a rugby coach as there is anywhere. You only have to look at the record of the Sharks since he came to the helm, to know that this is a man who understands that good people don’t need managing, they just need inspiring. As he himself confesses, he seems to be dealing with relationships differently these days, and he’s managed the integration of the Springboks back into his squad to perfection. Not many teams can put the Bulls away by daylight, yet that’s exactly what the local franchise did in a game which was more like waterpolo than rugby at King’s Park on Saturday afternoon.

While Western Province will never be a pushover in any final, you’d have to think you’d rather be John Plumtree than his counterpart, Alistair Coetzee right now, particularly with home ground advantage beckoning for this weekend’s final.

Meanwhile though, “Plum” isn’t just a pretty face when it comes to things beyond rugby. As a farm boy from Taranaki, New Zealand, he knows his stock, and he’s just about excited as we are about the gallop of “Plumtree” last Friday.

Cleverly named (his mother is the five-time winning daughter of Fort Wood, Fragrant Forest) this big, athletic colt by leading sire Kahal, told us he might just be worthy of his name when he got his head down at the business end on Friday. If you’re a sentimentalist and you believe in providence, he’s Lot 7. Don’t be late!
