Weekend Racing News For Miesque’s Approval And Spectrum

Recent Gr2 Victory Moon Stakes winner, Scott-bred Judicial, placed third in the Gr3 London News Stakes just two lengths off Australian import Killua Castle.

The son of Miesque’s Approval in his previous start placed third behind Louis The King in the Gr1 Summer Cup after his brilliant Gr2 win. Owned by Mr K P & Mrs N M Backos & Mr S F G Habib, he is trained by Tyrone Zackey. Judicial, out of a beautiful bay broodmare with a lovely white blaze down her face – Lady Advocate by Dolpour – has now won four times and placed seven.

Miesque’s Approval, standing at Scott Bros, consistently remains in the national Top 10 Sires log. His son Eton Square (renamed Eton Blitz) recently ran an impressive race in Hong Kong last week, sitting third behind the leader for most of the way of the 1800m on turf, to finish just three-quarters of a length off the winner. The South African Gr3 winner also placed fourth in the Gr1 Vodacom Durban July.

Miesque’s Approval is the current leading Sire by Stakes on Artificial Going according to sportinpost.co.za (stats as of 4 January). Gary Player Stud-bred Ming Warrior, out of Qui Danzig mare What A Gal, has won five times and tops the best of Miesque’s Approval’s progeny on artifical surfaces, notably Fairview. From Ming Warrior’s last seven starts, he has won twice and placed four times.

More Gr3 news is Varsfontein-bred Mljet, by KZN-bred Jet Master out of Subyan Dreams(GB) by Spectrum (the latter who stands at Yellow Star Stud), placed second in the Gr3 Politician Stakes on the weekend at Kenilworth behind Australian-bred The Conglomerate, by half a length.

Mljet has only been out of the money once from seven starts – winning twice and placing third behind Harry’s Son in the Gr1 Premiers Champion Stakes, a second and third to Act Of War in the Gr3 Cape Classic and Gr2 Selangor Cup. Broodmare Subyan Dreams has also produced Gr 1 placed Felix The Cat, a 4-time winning filly.

Spectrum’s other notable South African grandson is Tellina, who finished two lengths off Futura in the recent Gr1 L’Ormarins Queens Plate. Bred by Maine Chance Farms, Tellina is out of Irish-bred mare, Tachina. The four-time winner also has the Gr3 London News Stakes under his belt, and a winner of the Gr2 Gauteng Guineas. He famously finished controversially with Love Struck in the Gr1 SA Classic.

Spectrum has achieved notable international success as a broodmare sire, flourishing now with his grandson – Gr1 winning and producing Dutch Art – whose own son Slade Power has been sold to Darley for future stud purposes. He has been sent to Kildangan Stud, for a fee of 20 000 Euros. His Timeform Rating is 130, making him the best European Sprinter for more than a decade. His more recent wins included the Gr1 July Cup and Gr1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes.
