Big, black and beautiful – Crusade has arrived at Scott Bros’ Highdown Stud, ready to stand his first season in South Africa at a stud farm steeped in history – where once stood the great multiple national Champion sires Foveros and Jungle Cove – amongst their many stallions to contribute to the Thoroughbred gene pool in South Africa.

A son of sire-of-sires Mr Greeley, Crusade is a good-looking and athletic individual who stands over ground. He has a very good walk and great presence – when Crusade arrived to be viewed he made sure we knew he had arrived.

The Gr 1 Middle Park Stakes winner is an impressive individual out of La Traviata(USA) by Johannesburg(USA). Crusade had six starts in England, winning twice including the Gr 1 and placing once in a Group 3. Crusade also competed in the Breeders Cup Juvenile, but was badly interfered with and finished fifth subsequently.

Crusade’s win in the Gr 1 Middle Park Stakes saw him defeating a strong field of horses that included four Group 2 winners, including Capar Netscher who is a three-time Gr 2 winner.

Mr Greeley(USA), himself by Gone West out of Long Legend by Reviewer(USA), has produced 14 Group 1 winners at stud in both America and Europe and almost 60 Stakes winners – in 2008 he stood for a fee of $125,000.

Sadly Mr Greeley who stood at Gainesway, succumbed to Laminitis in 2010 at the age of 18. A Sire-Of-Sires, he has produced the likes of Cluster Of Stars, What A Name, El Corredor, Greeley’s Galaxy, Horse Greeley, Nicole H, and Belgravia, as well as Whywhywhy – the sire of Gr 2 Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf winner Nownownow in 2007.

Crusade’s dam La Traviata is by Johannesburg(USA), in turn out of Piedras Negras by Unbridled(USA) – out of a Devil’s Bag(USA) mare. La Traviata won three races at three years old in America including the Gr 3 Victory Ride Stakes at Saratoga and the Post Deb Stakes at Monmouth Park.

La Traviata is a very promising young broodmare, being the dam of two foals and two runners – both of which are Group 1 performing horses – the first being Crusade and second being Cristoforo Colombo(USA), by Henrythenavigator. Cristoforo Colombo placed in the Middle Park Stakes Gr 1, as well as running second in the Railway Stakes Gr 2 and third in the Coventry Stakes Gr 2 – all over distances of 1200m.

The Scott Bros will be presenting Crusade at their Stallion Day on Friday 24th May at 11:30 – please RSVP to greenhill@mweb.co.za. Lunch and refreshments will be served. To view more photos of Crusade, visit our Facebook page to see the following gallery.

The Scott Bros also stand Mogok(USA) – sire of international Group winners The Apache, Gypsy’s Warning and Meteor Mike, Miesque’s Approval(USA) – sire of Vodacom Durban July placed Eton Square and Placido, as well as The Sheik, Overlord(AUS) and the young sire Atso(USA).
