Rob Pickering of Middlefield Stud has reported that champion racehorse Byword(GB) has his first mares confirmed in foal.

Byword was an outstanding racehorse, who defeated no fewer than 22 Grade 1 winners during his career including the likes of Cirrus des Aigles, currently the top rated horse in Europe, as well as Twice Over. Rated 126 by Timeform, Byword’s seven wins included an impressive Gr 1 triumph in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot.

A grandson of Woodman and a son of one of the greatest racehorses of all time and now a leading sire, Peintre Celebre, Byword stands his first season at Middlefield Stud this year.

Rob reports excitedly that Byword has attracted a classy book of mares, including Gr 1 SA Fillies Classic winner Urabamba (by Fort Wood) whose Jet Master colt Master’s Spirit sold for R3 400 000 at the 2013 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.

Other mares that have been sent include Backworth Stud’s Dancing Royale (by Danehill Dancer), Lavishly (by West Man) – the dam of Gr 2 placed Young Currency has been confirmed in foal, while other mares visiting include Crystal Clear – the dam of Gr 3 winner Thunder Creek, as well as Kinmount Stud’s Rebel Qui (dam of Patriotic Rebel) and maiden mare Kalami, a Middlefield-bred grey filly who ran second by a head in the SA Fillies Classic Gr 1. Australian-bred Gr 3 Acacia Handicap winner Hurrican Queen (also placing in three Gr 3’s) is also included – she is the dam of three winners including three-time winner Mr Hurricane.

We look forward to seeing the chestnut champion’s foals on the ground next year!
