Media Release: Greyville Night Racemeetings Postponed

Inclement weather over the past month has forced Gold Circle to abandon the Greyville night racemeetings scheduled for October 30 and November 6. As a consequence racing action will only return to the City track on Sunday, November 18, when the second leg of the 2012 Avis Coach Charter Jockeys’ International, featuring some of the world’s best riders, will take place.

Gold Circle’s Racing Director Graeme Hawkins explains: “The turf over the recently constructed subway at the 300m marker was re-laid on September 25 and we were hopeful that the track would be ready for racing by October 30. Unfortunately, unfavourable weather conditions – plenty of rain but precious little sunshine – have forced us to adapt our fixtures.

“The track is coming along nicely but it would be taking an unnecessary risk to race over this area prematurely and we have thus decided to reschedule for November 23 and May 17, 2013 respectively.”

The racing programmes are being adjusted to embrace the change in fixtures and where necessary races will be added and/or split to cater for demand. The Betting World Guineas Trial will be run on Sunday, November 18, as an added feature on Jockeys’ International day but will not form part of the competition.
