The KZN Breeders Dressage Challenge is in full swing with a magnificent and athletic KZN-bred chestnut gelding topping the Log – Golden Acres’ bred Centennial, owned and ridden by Heather Cochrane.

From 25 horses entered, Centennial leads the Log by 8 points, with Memphis (by Ernani and owned by Sally Kenward) following by seven points and third position tied by Snoopy (by Baroon and owned by Julie Rawlins) and Roslyn (by Krusenstern and owned by Sue Sadler).

A tall six year old with good movement and big paces, Centennial has quite a story behind him. After racing in Kimberley and having just four starts, finishing in the placings once over 2200m at Flamingo Park, he was sold on and later rescued in poor condition from a slaughterhouse in Kimberley.

Mauritzfontein Stud kindly offered to take the gelding by Modus Vivendi in to recover, in the meanwhile Heather had been offered the horse to take on and compete in Dressage.

Centennial stayed at Mauritzfontein until he was strong enough to make the trip back to his place of birth, KZN. Heather took him on and began schooling him for Dressage. She is very pleased with his progress and Centennial has come on quickly with an eagerness to learn.

Out of the mare Royal Centenary by Centenary, Centennial is a half-brother to winner Pearly King (by Miesque’s Approval), a horse bred by Golden Acres (now Yellow Star Stud) and owned by KZN Breeders Chairman and owner of Yellow Star Stud, Koos De Klerk. Pearly King has also placed six times.

His sire Modus Vivendi stands at Cathy and Jonathan Martin’s Hadlow Stud in Mooi River, the sire of five-time Gr1 winning mare Dancewiththedevil.

The calibre of ex-racehorses competing in the KZN Breeders Dressage Challenge is a high one, which includes five-time winner Son Of Respect who placed second in the Michael Roberts Handicap Listed, five-time winner Cape Fard, globe-trotting Mr Brock who has campaigned in Dubai, France and Mauritius, winning seven times in total and placing 15 times.

Thank you to KZN Dressage – in particular to Sally McGrath – and congratulations to the riders and horses competing, we look forward to seeing the results of each challenge. See the photo gallery of the challenge at the following link.
