Foals From Clifton Stud For 2012

A visit to Clifton Stud in early December revealed outstanding foals by Peter Blyth’s exciting young sire, A.P. Answer. Big, athletic foals that are very muscular, they are all stamped by their sire and a fleeting glimpse of his first crop of yearlings in Clifton’s paddock revealed very good-looking individuals with powerful hindquarters.

Kali Mist by Rakeen – Fashing by Dancin Champ(USA) – had a beautiful filly by Trippi(USA) this year, after producing an outstanding A.P. Answer filly last year named Shivia’s Answer. Kali Mist placed from four starts and is the dam of four runners and four winners to date – including Maritime Mist who is a 5-time winner.

Fashing – the dam of Kali Mist was voted Equus Champion Broodmare in 2003. She won 3 races and placed 7 times. She is an own-sister to Fast Champ. She has foaled 8 winners to date that include Mast Abeam by Coastal – an 8-time winner several Listed Races and placing in a Grade 2 Handicap. Her other progeny include Donya – a 7-time winner including two Grade 3 wins and the dam of 3 winners herself including Drift Ice who has had 3 wins in Dubai.

Kali Mist’s half-brother is Yard-Arm by Western Winter. Voted Equus Horse of the Year in 2003, Equus Champion Older Middle Distance Male in 2003 and achieving 10 wins including being a winner in Dubai and earning stakes of R3,701,250 over distances of 1200 – 2450m, Yard Arm’s wins include the SA Derby Grade 1, J & B Met, Grade 1, Gold Challenge Grade 1, The Skeaping Champion Stakes Trophy Grade 1, Sun International Queen’s Plate (WFA) Grade 1, Elevation Stakes Grade 2, Clairwood Cup Trial Grade 3, Al Fahidi Fort Grade3 and places in the Grade 1 Summer Cup and Grade 1 Durban July. Gr 2 winning Glenrossal has produced a big, very eye-catching dark-bay filly by Mogok this season.

Glenrossal (by Anytime out of Sparkling Twist by All Fired Up) is a four-time winner, including the Gr 2 Gauteng Fillies Guineas and Starling Stakes Listed. She placed 11 times including second in the SA Fillies Classic Gr.1, The Fillies Nursery Gr.2, Yellowwood Handicap Gr.3, Steinhoff Fillies Mile Gr.3, Syringa and Goldfields Sprint (L), and third in the Acacia Handicap Gr.3.

She has produced a Var colt previously (now named Glenvar), a yearling.

This dam-line includes eight-time winning Redwing who placed second in the Gr 2 Gilbeys Stakes.

Cheetham Flag, by Allied Flag out of Cheetham Hill by Print, has produced a good-looking A.P. Answer filly this year.

She is a four-time winner from the age of 3-5 and placed 6 times over 1400m. She is the dam of winner, Cheet Em All by West Man. Cheetham Flag also has a yearling by A.P. Answer named Devil’s Advocate, as well as a two year old colt by Mullins Bay, Coastal Charm – who fetched R120 000 at the 2012 Emperors Palace National Two Year Old Sale.

This is the family of Hamildon Hill, Best Dressed, Well Dressed, Fashion Edition and African Appeal.

Tender Memories, by Exclusive Patriot out of Rare Memories(USA) by State Dinner(USA), is a two-time winner and has produced two winners – each by Allied Flag and Anytime.

Tender Memories has produced a big, very impressive looking bay filly by A.P. Answer this season.

The dam comes from a dam-line filled with Bold Black Type – starting with the likes of Gr 3 Winter Derby winner Great Memories, Native Royalty under the third dam (the broodmare sire of ex-KZN sire Qui Danzig), Champion 2-y-o filly in US, It’s In The Air, Gr 1 Epsom Oaks winner Balanchine(USA), Gr 3 winner in Panama Lady Analia(USA) and Gr 1 winner Only Queens(USA) – to name but a few!

Dolphin Beach, by Special Preview – Belmont Blue(GB) by Kashmir(IRE), has an outstanding bay filly by A.P. Answer. Dolphin Beach is herself a two-time winner of R110 000 and her wins include the Listed Ruffian Stakes. She is the dam of two winners including Bold-Black type winner by West Man, a gelding named East Beach – his three wins include the Grade 3 Chairman’s Champion Juvenile Stakes. Dolphin Beach has previously produced a beautiful Atso colt named Risky Rosco, who sold for R220 000 at the 2012 National Yearling Sale and another lovely yearling colt by A.P. Answer named Long Shot.

The second dam, Belmont Blue is a half-sister to ten-time Listed winner by Complete Warrior, Winning Purple.

The dam-line include Gr 2 Natal Oaks winner Danseuse Classique, Aslan – Equus Champion Stayer in 2011, Listed winner Gombera Boy as well as sire Plum Duff, Bold Vixen who ran a second in the Gr 1 Garden Province Stakes, and Angelina – winner of Cape Breeders’ Cup Paddock Stakes Gr.1 and SA Fillies Classic Gr.2. Other stand outs include nine-time Listed winner Heartwood and the Gr 2 winning dam of six winners, Epaulette.

Another foal with strong Clifton ties – being out of Allied Flag’s daughter Frisky Flag (herself out of Frisky Frances by Arbat), is a strong chestnut colt who was just a few weeks old when we photographed him. A beautifully put together colt – he is going to be one to look out for.

His dam is a six-time winner, and she placed 23 times include a seconds in the Gold Bracelet Gr.3, Acacia Handicap Gr.3, as well as the Jacaranda Handicap Gr.3. She produced an A.P. Answer colt last year, named Semaphor.

This dam-line includes Argentine sire Esplendor under the third dam – who stood successfully at stud in South Africa. He was a World record holder for 1400m, Second Leading First Season Sire in 1983.

Last but not least we have Le Touessrok, a daughter of exceptional broodmare sire Northern Guest. She is out of an Irish mare Ile Aux Cerfs by Wassl(GB), a son of the great Mill Reef.

Le Touessrok has produced a beautifully put-together A.P. Answer filly, who looks very much like her sire.

The mare has produced four winners to date, including Relinyane, a 9-time winner and two-time winner by Kahal, Top Talent. She is a half-sister to Gr 3 winning Tuscan Elegance, and her third dam is Abella(IRE) – the dam of top speed sires Thatching(IRE), champion sire Golden Thatch(IRE), and Waterville Lake(IRE).

The last foal by A.P. Answer is out of a mare Peter Blyth is quite excited about – Bit Of Bubbly. She is by Personal Hope(USA) – by Storm Bird(CAN), and Peter explains that the most success to come from A.P. Indy has been his crosses with lines of Storm Bird – which A.P. Answer also has in his fourth dam – South Ocean (the dam of Storm Bird), and judging by the colts appearance, there is a lot to be excited about.

A young colt when he was photographed, he is a foal that stands out and oozes quality with a handsome head. He arrived very confident within himself and exuded presence.

Bit Of Bubbly herself is out of the mare Sweet Sweet(AUS) by Kenmare(FR) – making her a half-sister to sire Meet At Malamala (by Western Winter). Meet At Malamala won the Secretariat Stakes Listed and placed 3rd in the Gr 1 Summer Cup. Her other half-sister is a filly by Miesque’s Approval named Sugar Rush, a winner who has placed from all four of her starts.

Bit Of Bubbly herself is a two-time winner, and has another A.P. Answer yearling named Find The Fizz.
