With Toreador and AP Answer both collecting winners on a feature race day at Turffontein, it was followed up with victories for breeders Bellwood Stud and Mr Gerald Kalil in the Egoli Mile (Non Black Type) and Ruffian Stakes Listed respectively. Patchitup Baby placed in the Sun Chariot Handicap (Non Black Type) after winning the Allez France Stakes in her previous start.

Bellwood Stud owned by Willie and Jeanine Messenger, the breeders of the brilliant Key Of Destiny in his day, have come to the end of their breeding era and Bold Viking is one of the last horses to come from the farm. The handsome flashy son of Black Minnaloushe is out of of Norse Woman by Northern Guest, and registered his second victory in the Egoli Mile at Turffontein.

Trained by Sean Tarry and owned in partnership by Messrs J Shill, G E Stein, M Trakman and J R van der Linden, the three year old sold for R300 000 off the 2015 National Yearling Sale. Norse Woman proved herself over and over again at stud – producing six winners including Gr3 Christmas Handicap winner Dance At Daylight and Golden Loom Handicap winner Mr Mickey Mouse.

The dam Norse Woman is a half-sister to Champion 2YO Filly Warning Zone; a winner in the USA as well as The Golden Slipper and Debutante Stakes. This is the also the immediate female line of Golden Peak, Record Edge, Magico and Aquanaut. Under Lyle Hewitson, Bold Viking beat Sebring gelding Alaadel (AUS) by a neck.

After King Of Kings death in 2015 due to heart failure at The Fort Stud, the son of Sadlers Wells may be gone but not forgotten after his as yet unbeaten juvenile daughter, Daring Diva, sprinted to almost a three length victory in the Ruffian Stakes Listed over 1000m and downed Kissable in the process.

The two year old bred and owned by Mr Gerald Kalil and ridden by Andrew Fortune is trained by Barend Botes.

The blistering fast filly, out of The Sheik mare Delightfull Diva, has won all three of her starts by a combined total of seven lengths and needs to be respected for future. Delightful Diva won five times, and has already proved the nick with King Of Kings after producing Queen Diva – a winner and 7-time placed from 10 starts. Keep a look out for her 2015 colt again by King Of Kings, named Royal Delight. This is a Scott Bros pedigree with the dam by The Sheik, out of Sapieha / Jabal Tarik mare.

King Of Kings has several broodmares at stud and he has achieved success in this capacity with currently a winners to runners percentage as a broodmare sire of 33.3%. Daring Diva has purchased a ticket to stud and we look forward to seeing more of her in the winners enclosure in the future. She has earned over R215 000 in stakes from only three starts.

Two other KZN-breds placed on Saturday; with Crusade’s son Mr Fire Eyes finishing fourth in his second start in the Storm Bird Stakes Listed, for trainer Corne Spies. Mr Fire Eyes is bred by Clifton Stud out of True Lily by Joshua Dancer. A R90 000 2016 National Yearling Sales purchase, his female line includes Villandry, Ravishing, Geordoba and Arion.

Paul Peter’s Movie Show, a daughter of Atso out of Picture Show by Sapieha finished third in the Bauhinia Handicap Listed for the Hyperpaint Syndicate.

Movie Show sold for just R12 000 at the Scott Bros Michael Holmes Sale in 2015 that took place at Durban Shongweni Club. The four year old daughter of Atso has placed consistently seven times and won four – taking her earnings to almost R300 000 – an incredible return on her sales price.

The Scott Bros sale that year at Shongweni has produced a myriad of winners – including the likes of Lockheed Star, Promissory, Beach Cottage, Sweet Refrain, Burnberry, Fashion Fusion and Lavender Bank – all for an average price of R11 000 each.

Congratulations to Lee Scribante and his partners Mr & Mrs A C Greeff and Mr C Scribante. Their smart Gimmethegreenlight filly Beataboutthebush won the Breeders Guineas Listed at Fairview on Friday – the filly is not one to like losing after winning four of her five starts, and placing a close second once.

She will be an incredible asset to Piemonte Stud’s exclusive broodmare band in the future, with her damline including the likes of Dancewiththedevil, Smart As Paint and Queen’s Elect.

Well done to all concerned.
