Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale KZN Results Day One

The 2012 Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale kicked off at 11am today and saw 250 yearlings come under the hammer with the average priced paid approximately R230 000 per yearling. Below are the top-priced KZN-bred yearlings, top-priced yearlings sold by KZN-based farms as well as the top-prices acheived for the progeny of young stallions such as Carpocrates, A.P. Arrow, Ravishing and Stronghold and Admire Main.

The top priced KZN-bred colt on the first day was Lot 165 from Greg Royden-Turners’ Roski Stud. The unnamed Trippi colt, out of Rambo’s Love by Rambo Dancer, was sold for R900 000 and signed for by Form Bloodstock. The colt descends from the female line of Dance All Day, Brief Affaire and Pass The Peace.

Top priced KZN-bred filly was Lot 231 from Summerhill Sales (as Agent), a filly named Highly Decorated. She is a first foal of Grade 2 winner Spring Garland and by Captain Al. Spring Garland is by Rambo Dancer out of top broodmare Garden Verse by Foveros. This is a top damline that includes the likes of Imbongi, Oracle News, Mahubo (who won in New York recently), Kelly and sire Victory Moon. She sold for R650 000 to Snaith Racing.

Lot 7, Isithelo, an Australian filly by Duke Of Marmalade out of Heaven Instead (by Carnegie/Zabeel damline), achieved the highest price sold by seven consecutive season champion breeders Summerhill Stud (as Agent) for R700 000 to Good-Hope Racing. This filly is a second produce and hails from the family of 10-time winner Rasmussen as well as Frontier Boy. Her second dam Jezabeel was Champion Stayer in New Zealand in 1999.

Lot 37, a smart dark bay colt named Acapulco, is the first yearling at the National Sales this year to be sold by the deceased Stronghold. Stronghold is currently lying 12th on the national log for Leading Sires of Two Year Olds by Stakes earned. Acapulco sold for R200 000 to trainer Dennis Drier. The colt was bred and consigned by Rathmor Stud out of their mare Jumeirah Beach by Jallad, a full-sister to Zebra Crossing (Grade 1 J&B Met winner) and half-sister to Circle Of Life and African Lion. The third dam is Tecla Bluff, Rothmans July winner of 1982. Jumeirah Beach has produced three winners to date.

Lot 67 Wishful Heart, a son of Carpocrates out of Linsumi by Linney Head sold for R210 000, consigned by Middlefield Stud. The colt was bought by World Wide Bloodstock and hails from the immediate family of Tetre Rouge. The colt is a half-brother to two time winner and Stakes Placed Wishful Eye. This is the highest price paid for a son of Carpocrates to date and Sunday will see another Carpocrates colt named Buck Shot – a half-brother to Grade 2 winner Thunder Creek – that will pass through the ring as Lot 403. Rob Pickering of Middlefield Stud has described Buck Shot as an outstanding individual. Carpocrates had his first winner from his first crop to race at Scottsville in the beginning of April.

Summerhill Stud’s resident Kahal has the most representation at the sale with 31 lots on offer. A multiple Grade 1 producing stallion that is consistently in the top 5 National Sires Log with the most reasonable service of just R45 000 last year – his top seller was Lot 89, a chestnut colt named Dhaamer sold to Gary Alexander Racing Stables for R480 000 by Summerhill Sales as Agent. He is out of the dam Mekyaas by Pivotal.

Lot 90 was bred and consigned by Backworth Stud, a chestnut filly named Too Much Fun out of the Habaayib mare Merriment. She is the first and only of Admire Main’s progeny to be sold at this years National Sale and was sold for R140 000 to Gavin Van Zyl. The third dam is Soho Secret, dam of London News and the family of Lady Brompton, Underground Lady and Promisefrommyheart, to name but a few. The dam is a half-sister to Super Wood.

Backworth Stud went on to sell Lot 106, a magnficent and imposing chestnut colt named Lucky Break by Muhtafal to Mrs Mary Liley for R650 000. This is the highest price attained for the progeny of Muhtafal at the National sale this year. The colt is a half-brother to another Backworth-bred Raise The Bar, out of the mare Moving On Up by Jallad. Interestingly, Raise The Bar is by Goldkeeper, who in turn is by Mr Prospector – the sire of Muhtafal. Raise The Bar is a six-time winner (including the Nkosazana Stakes Listed) and has placed ten times, earning himself over R510 000. The second dam is Grade 3 winning Eternal Dancer with other Black-type winners including Chattaronga, Red Butler and Magnepoise.

Lot 167 saw the highest price paid to date for a daughter of A.P. Arrow represented at his first National sale. The filly is out of the Rambo Dancer mare Ransom, and again consigned by Summerhill Sales as Agent, named Run The Arrow. She sold to D Stenger for R130 000. This is the dam-line of Rusty Pelican, Right Royal Rage and Princely Heir. Three more colts representing A.P. Arrow will be presented on Sunday.

Lot 203 saw an unnamed filly by Jet Masters’ son Ravishing sell for R150 000. Consigned by Riverton Stud as Agent, this filly has achieved the top price for a Ravishing to date. The bay filly sold to Mr J Van de Vendel. She is out of the Stakes Placed mare Sharp Mistress by Tamberlaine.
