Clairwood racecourse saw the first South African winner for the Summerhill Stud-based sire Ravishing yesterday, when the 3Y0 gelding Kishimoto won the first race of the day over 1200m.

Trained by KZN training legend, Dennis Drier, the son of Ravishing paid tribute to his great genes and grandsire, the late and much lamented Jet Master.

Kishimoto’s sire Ravishing, who stands at Summerhill Stud was one of Jet Master’s highest priced yearlings from his first crop, fetching R1.1 million. Out of the Royal Prerogative mare Crimson Lily, Ravishing proved himself to be a versatile winner over a variety of distances.

At 3 he achieved his most notable success, going down a hard fought second to Biarritz in the Gr.2 Gauteng Guineas. A few weeks later he got his Group One victory when he beat a quality field by 2 lengths to win the R1 million S.A.Derby over 2450m.

Sent to stud in 2008, Ravishing has already achieved success in Zimbabwe, thanks to his talented daughter Little Chikitita, who has 2 wins including the Breeders Fillies Mile under her belt, and looks to be an emerging superstar.

It seems that finally the racing and breeding fraternity are starting to take note of Ravishing. At the recently concluded KZN Yearling Sale (4&5 July) at Suncoast Casino in Durban, Ravishing’s top priced yearling was the Spring Valley entry, the 10 Gleaming Sovereign colt, who went for R150 000 to South African racing legend, Basil Marcus.

Kishimoto is co-owned by well-known racing personality Steve Sturlese and Peter de Marigny. If this first performance was anything to go by, then there is certainly a lot more to come from the progeny of Ravishing on the racetracks around the country.
