Koos and Lorraine De Klerk’s Yellow Star Stud will be doubly represented at the Emperors Palace Yearling Sale this year.

The Mooi River based farm will be offering two high quality colts by triple Equus Champion and rising star sire What A Winter. A four time G1 winning son of triple champion sire Western Winter, and from the same female line as Hyperion and Sir Tristram, What A Winter made an instant impression at stud, and was South Africa’s Champion First Crop Sire in 2016-2017.

The champion’s first crop was headed by the graded stakes winners Dutch Philip and Magical Wonderland, while What A Winter’s second crop includes G1 Bidvest Majorca Stakes winner Clouds Unfold and Ibhyai Stakes hero Fabian.

High class racemare Maggie Kay, whose five wins included the G3 Magnolia Handicap, has already made her mark at stud as the dam of speedy Gardenia Stakes winner Queen Laurie and Yellow Star Stud will be offering a What A Winter half-brother (Lot 439) to Queen Laurie at the National Sale.

This colt’s second dam is a National Assembly half-sister to multiple G1 winner Ingleside and this is family of champions Dancing Danzig and Evening Mist.

What A Winter is also represented in this draft by a colt (Lot 465) out of a winning half-sister to millionaire and multiple graded stakes winner Kangaroo Jack, with this colt’s second dam being none other than G1 Garden Province Stakes runner up Rainbow Flag. Further back, this is the family of the July placed champion Dollar Fortune and Golden Slipper queen Gilded Minaret.

Yellow Star have welcomed a beautiful foal by Noble Tune (Unbridled’s Song) out of Magical Trip by Trippi, and a beautiful Kildonan for owner and breeder Ted Hughes.

A cross that produced Triple Gr1 winner Liam’s Map (Unbridled’s Song x Trippi) who stands at Lane’s End and has just seen his first yearlings sold for up to $310 000. Liam’s Map won the Gr1 Breeders Cup Dirt Mile and set a new track record, and ran the fastest Woodward since 2004. He stands alongside Noble Tune’s half-brother Honor Code at Lane’s End Farm.

Magical Trip, out of a Model Man mare is a winner and placed four times.

Another arrival is a chestnut foal by Kildonan x Dont Mention It by Tobe Or Nottobe. The dam won six times and placed on seven occasions. Kildonan produced almost 30% winners to runners last season.

Ted Hughes has purchased Golden Sword and he stands at Yellow Star Stud this season. Golden Sword, who placed a stride behind the great Sea The Stars in the English Derby and is a full brother to Gr1 Melbourne Cup winner Rekindled, will be getting a select band of mares this season. Golden Sword’s half-brother won at The Curragh on the weekend for trainer Aiden Ó Brien.

Mooi River farm, and long-time KZN Yearling Sale stalwarts, Yellow Star Sale will be represented by six quality yearlings at the 2018 KZN Yearling Sale, set to take place on the 5^th and 6^th of July this year.

Two of the draft are sired by the farm’s resident young Galileo son The Assayer. This pair includes a bay filly (Lot 29) out of four time stakes winner Sheikitupbaby, whose victories included the Listed Spook Express Handicap. This is the same family as short-lived Cape Guineas winner Domino Man and seven time stakes winner Storm Champ.

The Assayer is also represented in the Yellow Star draft by a colt (Lot 210) out of the exceptionally well related Jet Master mare Jillnaar. The latter is out of a half-sister to New Zealand champion and multiple G1 winner King’s Chapel and this is also the family of hugely influential sire Mummy’s Pet.

Middle Park Stakes winner Crusade has made a bright start to his stud career, and has been represented by stakes winners in each of his first two crops to race. The son of Mr Greeley has two here –a half-sister to 4 winners including seven time stakes winner Furious Dancer (Lot 174), and a colt out of a winning National Assembly half-sister to millionaire Kangaroo Jack (Lot 251).

Final two in the Yellow Stud draft are both sired by the farm’s resident sire, and Equus Champion, Kildonan. First of these is a filly (Lot 228) from the same family as legendary champion Horse Chestnut, while the Kildonan colt in the draft (Lot 263) is a half-brother to the very durable Panza and is out of a daughter of G1 winning sprinter Nobely Born.

Owned by Koos and Lorraine De Klerk, Koos has always been known for his clever marketing concepts and this sale proved that thinking out of the box can often reap the rewards!

A clever concept with 15 two year olds for sale by silent auction, buyers could inspect the horses at leisure and put forward their written bid into a box. If a horse received more than one bid, the buyer with the highest total was the winner.

From 15 horses catalogued by Irish Flame, Crusade, Great Britain, Kildonan, The Assayer, Lion Tamer, Meteor Shower, Tropical Empire and Spectrum, nine were sold to KZN and Gauteng racing stables.

It was a relaxed day where visitors used the opportunity to drive around the farm at leisure and view the horses and facilities, which includes Ivan Van Wyk’s racing establishment which houses the likes of multiple winners Putchini and Panza.

A festive Christmas braai with plenty of wine and beer was on offer and a very enjoyable day was had by all!
