First Winner For Lance!
A son of Jet Master and a half-brother to Gr1 winner Liege, Lance produced his first winner Voltron at Turffontein on Sunday for trainer Sean Tarry, and owner Chris van Niekerk.
The 2yo filly Voltron won impressively by four lengths over the 1200m trip under Lyle Hewitson.
Bred by Summerhill Stud, Lance has had limited opportunities and only has two juvenile runners on the track; the other being Kuuma who has yet to be out of the money from five and finished a length off Kotinos – a horse the Roy Magner stable hold in high regard.
Voltron has placed three times previously. The grey filly is out of a Jay Peg mare Silver Jay, in turn out of a National Emblem mare, making it a truly South African pedigree!
Lance stands over ground and big at 16.2 hands, and a two-time winner including the Secretariat Stakes Listed.
He descends from a star Summerhill family, out of Lyrical Linda his full brother is 7-time winner Lockheed Star and the female line includes Rebel King, King’s Temptress, Rebel Queen and Uncle Tommy, as well as sire Big Swinger.
Jet Master’s successful sons at stud include Master Of My Fate, Pomodoro and Skitt Skizzle.
“It’s a tragedy that’s Lance’s racing career was cut short due to an injury. He was loaded with ability and even though his brother Liege was a Summer Cup Group 1 winner, Lance was in a completely different class. He was as good a three year old as anything else that I’ve trained at a similar stage in his career. Don’t forget his victim in the Secretariat Stakes, the Triple Crown winner, Louis The King.” – Sean Tarry
