Vodacom Durban July KZN News

Lady Christine Laidlaw’s Khaya Stables emerged victorious in the 2015 Vodacom Durban July with Silvano colt Power King trained by Dean Kannemeyer, a previous winning combination for Dean with the yellow and black silks previously carried by Summerhill’s exciting young new stallion acquisistion, Capetown Noir, and we warmly welcome Khaya Stables who recently registered with the KZN Breeders Club.

Three of the first four horses that crossed the hallowed 2015 Vodacom Durban July finish were out of mares by KZN-based stallions; Power King continuing the Summerhill connection being out of a Northern Guest mare, Northern Gale. Tellina is out of Yellow Star Stud’s broodmare extraordinaire Spectrum, whilst Futura ran a brilliant race carrying a hefty 60kg, his broodmare sire Badger’s Drift.

Another extraordinary feat never seen before, Silvano was the sire of the first three across the line. Power King won by three quarters of a length from Punta Arenas, with Tellina and Futura finishing respectively.

Capetown Noir, a magnificent son of Western Winter out of Fort Wood mare Akinfeet who won three Gr1’s, will be presented for the first time today at Summerhill’s annual Stallion Day which traditionally takes place the day after the Vodacom Durban July.

As the Vodacom Durban July day has unfolded, three graduates of the Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale have emerged once more, with previous KZN Yearling Sale Million winner and Gr1 Thekweni Stakes winner Same Jurisdiction taking home the Gr1 Garden Province Stakes last night at Greyville.

The other was Tiger Territory, the first yearling to sell for over a R1million at the Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale, a son of Trippi sold in 2011 for R1,1million won his 10th race on the tenth race carded on Vodacom Durban July day, whilst Alesh Naidoo’s and Mr Da Costa’s Clifton-bred A.P. Answer juvenile gelding Cutting Edge galloped home to grab the KZN Yearling Sale Million by a neck from Natal and Chosen Dash.

Peter and Jenny Blyth’s Clifton Stud (breeders of Durban July winner Classic Flag) have had a purple patch, with Bezanova taking home the KZN Breeders Million Mile. Cutting Edge has now had two wins and two places from just four starts, an R80 000 graduate of the 2014 Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale.

Congratulations to all concerned on another great Vodacom Durban July day!
