Gypsy’s Warning Attempting A Repeat Win In The Grade 1 Matriarch Today

Rathmor-bred Gypsy’s Warning comes into the race off a sixth-place finish (beaten 3 1/4 lengths) in the First Lady Stakes (Grade 1) and is part of a three-horse Matriarch contingent for trainer Graham Motion. The Matriarch, the ninth on a 10-race program, is set to go off at 4:37 p.m. PST. Motion has tabbed top Southern California rider Joel Rosario, who was aboard Gypsy’s Warning in last year’s Matriarch, for a return engagement.

The six-year-old Mogok–Gypsy Queen mare was purchased by the Niarchos family’s Flaxman Holdings for $1,050,000 at the 2011 Keeneland November breeding stock sale from the consignment of Denali Stud, agent for previous owner Team Valor International. She remains in the care of trainer Graham Motion, who conditions horses for both her current and previous ownership groups.

The only female to win the Matriarch more than once is Flawlessly, who won three in succession (1991-1993) for Harbor View Farm, trainer Charlie Whittingham and jockey Chris McCarron.

The KZN-bred, who has won seven of 20 starts and earned $513,912, is one of a trio Motion has scheduled to run in the Matriarch, joining Unbridled Humor and Summer Soiree.
