KZN and Yellow Star Stud will be keeping a close eye on the upcoming Emirates Melbourne Cup Gr 1 to be run in Australia on Tuesday.

Spectrum’s talented maternal grandson Winchester lines up in stall five to run in one of the world’s most prominent races over a marathon 3200m, for a first prize stake of $AUS 3,6 million. He carries a weight of 55.5kgs, whilst favourite and last years winner Dunaden, jumps from stall one to carry 59kgs.

South African jockey Glyn Schofield lines up number 22, Unusual Suspect.

Winchester (by Theatrical) is the winner of four Group 1 races in the USA, and placing in nine Group races. He was sold and exported earlier this year to Australia, now owned by Rosemont Stud with the intent of being a future sire. He will stand alongside the likes of Danzero and Toorak Toff. Spectrum continues his broodmare sire success overseas, with a win in the UK yesterday with Pure Excellence (by Exceed and Excel) out of Albavilla. Pure Excellence won the Montrose Fillies Stakes over eight furlongs Newmarket, for two year old fillies in soft turf, by 1.5 lengths.

On the same day in the USA, Brother Francis by Lion Heart, out of Spectrum mare Viapervita, placed third in the Damascus Stakes Listed at Santa Anita over seven furlongs on a fast dirt track. Brother Francis was defeated by a length. Brother Francis has placed in four Black Type races, including a Gr 1.

September saw Moonlight Cloud – a very talented grand-daughter of Spectrum who will be remembered for almost changing history by almost catching Black Caviar in her 22nd win at Ascot – win the Gr 1 Prix de Moulin de Longchamp at Longchamp over 1600m, on good to soft turf in France. Her dam Ventura sold earlier this year for a whopping 900 000gns.

Spectrum also produced places as a broodmare sire in two Black type races in Germany recently, with Anatol Artist placing second in a Gr 3 in Cologne over 1600m in soft to heavy turf. Anatol Artist is by Doyen out of Anna Spectra.
The other is Stark Danon, who placed third in the Bayerischer Fleigerpreis in Munich over 1300m. A French-bred racehorse, he is by Marchand De Sable (by Theatrical) out of Sue Generoos.
