Cathy Martin of Hadlow Stud has announced that their foaling season began in the early hours of Saturday morning, quite possibly the first Thoroughbred foal to be born in KZN.

A filly by Jam Alley(AUS) out of the mare Notaloud by Announce arrived as an early surprise. It is her dam’s first foal, she was originally due 18 August and Cathy Martin says , “A tad early she is! This filly could be the first foal in the district, she is doing very well though.”

The mare placed once from just two starts. Her dam, Out Of Bounds is a half-sister to Gr 2 Kings Cup winner Whacky Lad and Whip ‘Em. Notaloud is a half-sister to 3-time winning Bound For Russia (Russian Revival).

Jam Alley, a striking chestnut Gr 1 winning son of Peintre Celebre out of Lyphard Street by Lyphard, the only son of Peintre Celebre in South Africa at stud, has had 16 runners and 6 winners and 20 places to date from those runners. His daughter, a half-sister to multiple Gr 1 winning Dancewiththedevil named Dance Alley, has achieved 2 wins and 5 places to date in her first racing season.

Jam Alley was imported from Australia and owned and trained by St John Gray, he had 5 wins over a distance of 1400 – 1800m from the age of 3 – 5, with 8 places and earning himself R1 028,325 in stakes. In his first four starts he won three times, including the Grade 1 South African Classic over 1800m and placing in the Gauteng Guineas over 1600m. He also ran a place in the Grade 1 Summer Cup over 2000m.

The maternal grand-sire of the filly, Announce, recently returned to Hadlow Stud from the Cape. By National Assembly out of You’re My Lady by Roberto, he was a winner of four races (including the Listed Thukela Handicap) and placed seven times in South Africa over 1200-1600m from ages three to four. He is a full-brother to another Graystone Stud-owned stallion, Sarge.

Announce has produced 133 runners to date, with a staggering 82 winners – five of those are Stakes Winners and eight Stakes Placed. His progeny with Graded Stakes wins include Announce Speed, Horatio and Call To Combat – who stood his first season last year at Hadlow Stud.
