35 Time-Winner Hear The Drums Retired To Summerhill Stud Share

Hear The Drums – the most successful racehorse in South African history in terms of number of wins – has retired from racing and has returned to his birth place, Champion Breeders Summerhill Stud.

Foaled in 1994, he earned over R1 000 000 in stakes, having 65 Starts, 35 of them wins (including placing in two Grade 1 events - the 2009 and 2010 Cape Flying Championships W-F-A as well as numerous Listed Races) and 19 places; he deserves a happy and effortless retirement.

Summerhill's website says of him: "Until Hear The Drums went to the races, the title of winning-most racehorse in South Africa, was held by a former Hartford graduate, Sentinel (32 wins), but it’s a sign of the value of good land, good people and a good upbringing, that Hear The Drums took his owner, Peter Fabricius and his trainer, Des McLachlan, to that most valuable piece of real estate in racing, the winner’s enclosure on no fewer than 35 occasions.

"It’s worth recalling that Peter Fabricius bought Hear The Drums on an impulsive whim on the telephone when there were just two lots left in the sale and he was all we had to recommend. It’s an irony of the game that if Peter had seen his legs, he probably would not have made the purchase. Hear The Drums was, however, one of those that defied God’s engineering, that overcame the purest antipathy towards racehorse’s imperfections, and his guts, courage and that indefinable characteristic that belongs to the great ones, carried him through."

By Gold Press out of Winning Glory by Gallic League, Hear The Drums passed through three sales rings before he found an owner for just R42,000, retires as the most prolific winner in South Africa’s glorious racing history.

His dam Winning Glory was a three time winner (including the TR Lewis Memorial Stakes Listed) and bred three runners and two winners. She has a 2010 Stronghold colt called Marino Casino.

When Summerhill start weaning later this month, Hear The Drums will accompany the likes of Senor Santa, Amphitheatre and Redcarpetstyle – fellow legends of the turf looking after or, as it’s known on the farm, “baby sitting” the up-and-coming champions.

Many thanks to Peter & Gail Fabricius and trainer, Des McLachlan. It is a great honour for a Summerhill bred & raised, to return to the farm and live out the rest of his days in green pastures.

Congratulations must go to Summerhill Stud for breeding this incredible and gutsy racehorse, again making KZN Breeders proud.
