Vodacom Durban July Entries – 18 April 2013

Vodacom Durban July Entries – 18 April 2013

It is reaching that exciting time of year again, and the Vodacom Durban July entries have been released. A number of talented KZN-breds – or horses associated through KZN being by our sires – are represented, including Kahal’s recent Gr 1 winner Love Struck, bred by Summerhill Stud.

KZN Breeders are also very excited to announce the running of the KZN Breeders Juvenile Million, a race open exclusively for two year olds, bred anywhere in the country, who graduated off the 2012 Suncoast KZN Yearling Sale – subject to the individual breeders agreeing to certain terms and conditions. To see a list of the two year olds who qualify for this race, click on the following link.

Of course another exciting addition to this is the KZN Breeders Race day to be run the week before – 30 June 2013. Besides the race of the day being the KZN Breeders Million Mile for 3 & 4 year olds, six races will take place for KZN-bred horses (registered with the KZN Breeders Premium Scheme) over the age of three, for R200 000 each over distances of 1200, 1600 and 1900m. An additional two year old race over 1200m will also take place for KZN-breds, for a stake of R200 000.

Logs are being kept fortnightly for the two and three year olds separately, published in the Sporting Post and on our website, for the horses competing for a place in the races for R200 000.

The Million Mile is excluded from this process and will follow normal procedures, with entries opening 14 June.

Other Summerhill-breds entered are Smanjemanje (also by Kahal), last years unlucky second in this race last year – he had the race one stride before and after the finish line. Pierre Jourdan, now a six year old, has been entered and was another to run second to Igugu(AUS) in this race two years ago. Pierre Jourdan has a half-brother entered into the Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale, by Kahal, as Lot 243 named Dakiwe.

Kahal’s third representative is Bellwood-bred Gr 3 winning five year old mare, Enchanted Kingdom, who also recently placed second in the Gr 3 Jacaranda Handicap.

Other names include the ever-consistent Seal (born and raised at Bush Hill Stud) who won the Gr 2 Mango Gold Vase on Vodacom Durban July day last year. Now a five year old, Seal has now had eight wins in total, three of them in his last four starts.

Tellina, a controversial finisher to Love Struck in the recent Gr 1 SA Classic and winner of the Betting World Gauteng Guineas Gr 2, is a grand-son of Yellow Star’s Spectrum.

The Scott Bros’ E-Jet, by Jet Master out of Esmaltina(ARG) by Equalize(USA), has placed in three Gr 1’s, a Gr 3 and won the Colorado King Stakes Gr 2 by over a length last time out. The gelding has four wins in total and placed eight times from 14 starts.

Baracah, a half-brother to the talented and ill-fated Goat by King Of Kings, has been entered by trainer Sean Tarry. Baracah is bred by Keivan Stud, had had a total of 4-wins and recently placed behind E-Jet in his last run.

Another son of Miesque’s Approval, Putney Flyer, has been entered this year. The ultra-consistent four year old gelding has won three times, and placed 12 times amongst very respectable Group company. Another son of Miesque’s Approval, Eton Square, ran third in the Vodacom Durban July has since been exported to Hong Kong.
Putney Flyer is owned by Hassan Adams and trained by Weiho Mawing.

Solskjaer’s talented son Shogunnar, bred by Mr F Tarbitt, is out of Surfer’s Eye who is proving herself to be a broodmare of note – recently also being the dam of Admire Main’s first winner, Admiral’s Eye. Shogunnar is also a half-brother to Black-Type full-sisters Rapid Flow (in foal to Kahal) and Saltwater Girl.

Alesh Naidoo who owns Love Struck has had a lot of success with this family – owning the recent winner Admiral’s Eye, as well as both Rapid Flow and Saltwater Girl. Alesh has retained Rapid Flow for breeding. Shogunnar is a winner, and placed eight times – five of those Group races including second in the Gr 1 Sansui Summer Cup by just half a length.

Penhaligon, bred by Yellow Star Stud, is a four-time winner who recently finished second in the Gr 3 King’s Cup behind Pessoa, and just two lengths off in his last start – the Easter Handicap Listed. By Daylami out of Coastal mare Victoria Bay, the beautiful grey colt is owned by Mr J Jones and trained by Alyson Wright.

Patriotic Rebel, by Stronghold out of Rebel Qui by Qui Danzig and bred by Kinmount Stud, has been nominated by trainer Brett Crawford. A two-time winner, he recently placed behind Love Struck in the Listed Politician Stakes just short of a length, and again behind Capetown Noir in the Gr 1 Investec Cape Derby, again by a length. From nine starts the three year old colt has also placed five times.

Gr 1 SA Classic winning sire Jam Alley has his first son entered in the big race this year, with Yer-Maan, bred, trained and owned by St John Gray. The chestnut colt out of Jallad mare Cheers, has won four races and placed 11 times, including the Java Handicap Listed.

A horse that has won or placed in every single one of his nine starts, Big City Angel by Bezrin has been entered by trainer Gavin Van Zyl. A three-time winner owned by Mr Chow of The Apache fame, Big City Angel ran second in his last start, the recent Easter Handicap Listed over 2000m.

Wishing all the owners and connections concerned the best leading up to South Africa’s biggest Group 1 race! The theme for the big race day looming is Posh? Oh My Gosh!
