KZN’s recently crowned 2016 Stallion Of The Year Kahal, saw his dual Gr1 placed daughter, an impeccably Summerhill-bred grand-daughter of the great Galileo, secure her first much deserved first Graded Stakes win in the Gr2 Ipi Tombe Challenge.
The KZN Breeders Awards were held at Bellwood Stud on 26 November. Scott Bros’ son of Overlord, also voted Equus Champion Sprinter, was crowned 2016 KZN Breeders Horse Of The Year.
Entries have opened for the KZN Breeders Series of eight races at a stake of R200 000 each, held on KZN Breeders Race Day taking place in Sunday 25 June 2017, and last year saw a record with almost 900 horses entered for the day. Download Form in link.
The following KZN-breds will be up for auction on 24 – 25 November at the CTS Ready To Run Sale, taking place at Randjesfontein. First season KZN sires with progeny on sale include Crusade and Await The Dawn, whilst Linngari has progeny on offer and the last two year olds by Kahal – consistently a national top 5 sire – will be up for auction. KZN-breds can be identified with stable door posters and hip stickers on during the sale.
A R150 000 National Two Year Old Sale graduate, Clifton-bred Bezanova has won six races with 10 places from 34 starts and took his career bank to R1 966 775.
Kildonan’s daughter Beach Goddess won the R150 000 Listed Laisserfaire Stakes yesterday at Kenilworth for trainer Brett Crawford.
“That’s a very very hard pedigree to get into,” said Baccari, who said the partnership could race the colt or resell him. “I happened to see the colt on the farm ahead of time so I had the ability to see what I was going to get into. He’s just a very special horse. Very hard to find that kind of pedigree with that kind of sire power.”
Crusade’s dual Gr1 winning Galileo half-sister, Seventh Heaven, placed fourth in the Gr1 Breeders Cup Filly & Mare Turf, whilst Flying The Flag’s full sister by Galileo, Rhododendron has been nominated for a Cartier Award in the Champion 2YO Filly category. Under Ryan Moore, Seventh Heaven finished one and a quarter lengths in fourth place…
KZN-breds had significant success at Turffontein yesterday, with sons of Admire Main, Just As Well and Toreador all winning on the big day.

He literally was prancing after the race was over. … He’s so talented. He’s got amazing stamina. He doesn’t quit. He could have gone around again. He’s incredible.”
