Second Empire(IRE) sadly had to be put down yesterday. After a successful surgery on a fractured radial carpal, Second Empire shattered his hind leg while getting up after the anesthetic. He was unable to be saved.
Owned by passionate breeders Manny and Mandy Testa of Midlands Thoroughbreds, Second Empire(IRE) stood at Yellow Star Stud. His Australian son Tropical Empire, recently joined him at the same farm.
By Fairy King out of Welsh Love by Ela-Mana-Mou, he was a 640.000 guineas yearling, he raced admirably in France, England and Ireland, achieving 4 wins over 1600m at 2 and 3 and earning a respectable Timeform rating of 124. He was second top-rated European 2 year old, and Champion 2 year old and 3 year old Miler in Ireland.
He was sent to stud in Ireland in 2000 and shuttled to Australia in 2000, before coming to South Africa in 2004 and
his notable progeny list is impressive, and he also began proving himself as a Broodmare Sire.
His progeny overseas include Empire Gold(AUS) a Stakes Winner in Hong Kong and 2nd in the Grade 1 Australia Derby, Sugar Baby Love a Grade 2 placing in Germany, Beckermet(IRE) Grade 3 placed in the UK, Moet Magic(AUS) a Grade2/3 winner, to name but a few.
As a broodmare sire, he produced Reckless Reward(IRE) Grade 2 placed in the UK, and Baine(FR) a stakes winner and Grade 1 placed horse.
In South Africa his successes have been with Tropical Empire(AUS) who won the Grade 2 Drill Hall Stakes, Grade 2 Greyville 1900m, Michael Roberts (L) 1800m; 2nd Grade 2 Drill Hall Stakes 1400m, Grade 3 Cup Trial 1800m, and the Grade 3 Byerly Turk over 1400m, the other being a filly Silver Empire(AUS), the winner of the Flamboyant Stakes (Listed) 1600m; 3rd Grade 1 Garden Province 1600m, Gr1 Gold Bracelet 2000m. Other progeny include the likes of Marcus Antonius, Second World, and Miss Scaramanga, winner of the East Cape Oaks 2000m (Listed).
He is certainly a sad loss for breeders, with his progeny being successful in different parts of the world.
Midlands Thoroughbreds summed it up on their Facebook Profile "We will miss this very important part of our dream. He was a great champion."
