Black Caviar Notches Up 18th Win Share

Black Caviar

The speedy Australian mare Black Caviar took her unbeaten sequence to 18 in Saturday’s seven-furlong C F Orr Stakes at Caulfield in Melbourne with another effortless victory, and then Peter Moody sprang a surprise on his rival trainers.

By Bel Esprit(AUS) out of Helsinge by Desert Sun(GB), she shares an interesting pedigree comparison with a foal standing at Warwick Render's Bush Hill Stud. The colt is by Brave Tin Soldier out of Snippety Snip by Jallad, however both have Northern Dancer, Danzig and Snippets in the first four generations.

Moody said that Black Caviar, rated just four pounds inferior to Frankel in the World Thoroughbred Rankings, could now run in Saturday’s five-furlong Lightning Stakes at Flemington. Several trainers bypassed the Orr Stakes in order to avoid a clash with the champion mare, who has been acclaimed the best of her sex ever to have raced in Australia.

The attraction of the Lightning Stakes is that it is a leg of the $1 million Global Sprint Challenge. By winning in her home country and then either Dubai or Japan, before or after her proposed visit to Royal Ascot in June, should give her enough points to win the lucrative incentive.

Her trainer Peter Moody says she loves the straight course at Flemington and "would have to gallop at home next weekend in any case, so why not gallop for the money?” Black Caviar sat poised behind the leaders throughout and then raced to the lead at the top of the home straight. Yet again, she never looked under pressure at any stage. This first step up to seven furlongs was not an issue as she easily beat the Caulfield Cup winner Southern Speed.

Black Caviar, a first foal for her dam, was a $AUS 210 000 yearling, from the 2008 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale. She has won $AUS 4,743,050 by a combined winning margin of an incredible 61.6 lengths.

Her half-brother by Casino Prince sold for a record breaking $AUS 1.025 million to Sydney trainer John Hawkes at he 2011 Inglis Easter Sale.
