Tribute To Hector Lawrence - KZN's Oldest Breeder Turning 100 Hector Lawrence is a life member of Gold Circle, and during the 1960’s was an owner, trainer and breeder. Hector owned Devon Stud in Mooi River later selling it on to be renamed Regent Stud. He then built on the adjourning farm selling to Kevin van Laun who renamed it Camargue Stud. Hector raced predominately in Kwazulu-Natal with contemporaries of the time, Trevor and Joyce Tatham and Ray Ellis. Hector engaged David Payne as his main stable jockey and had a very close relationship to the then ‘young’ Michael Roberts. He was a vendor at the National Yearling Sales and remembers how he leased Ronnie Napier his first horse, Apollo. Great successes he enjoyed were in particular with Centre Court, Thunderball and Cherry Top all winners in Hector’s black and gold silks. Hector celebrates his 100th birthday on Wednesday 11 September 2013 at his home in Howick.
