Just As Well(USA) First Foals

Farms across KZN continue to produce foals by Just As Well, with some impressive first foals arriving this season. Just As Well is owned by Greg Royden-Turner of Roski Stud and Anton Proctor, and he stands at Bruce le Roux's Spring Valley Stud in Mooi River.

I Said Hey, by Alami out of Protique by Proclaim, has produced a Just As Well foal this season at Spring Valley Stud. She is the dam of three winners and her half-sister Shahdokt placed at Scottsville over the weekend. I Said Hey had three wins at the track, placing 11 times.

Her second dam is Mustique, a winner of the Gr 3 Strelitzia Stakes. She produced Foveros gelding Glenconner, and her descendants include top filly Sarabande, winner of the Fancourt Majorca Stakes Gr 1. Sarabande has gone onto produce Chesalon, a Gr 2 Premier Trophy and Gr 3 Winter Classic winner.

Other Bold Black-Types found under the third dam, Judith, include Desert Salute, Sharp Ledge, Cape Hunt, Island Retreat, Name The Key, Next Edition, Refer To Daddy and Dance Every Dance.

Flight Prospect, by Secret Prospector out of Columbia by Northern Drive, is a four-time winner and placed thirteen times. She has produced three winners from four runners, including Falana (4-time winner) and For The Birds by Miesque's Approval. She has produced a foal by Just As Well at Spring Valley Stud.

Flight Prospect's half sister produced five-time winner To And Fro and Valley Of Rubies, who placed second in the Gr 3 Sycamore Sprint.

Second Dam is Soltera, dam of sire Song Of Songs(GB), voted Champion Older Horse in Sweden with wins across Europe including Britain, Sweden, Germany and Belgium. She also produced Sing A Song(GB) who in turn produced sire Hays(IRE).

Third dam is No Appeal, her progeny include a sire who stood in South Africa by Nijinsky, Piaffer, as well as Strong Drink and Black Dragoness. Other descendants include another sire who stood in South Africa, the grey Lords(SNL), Have A Ball, Waikato, champion racehorse and sire of London News, Bush Telegraph to name but a few from a good family.

Qui Sera of Spring Valley Stud is by Qui Danzig out of Swiss Pearl by Fort Wood, a winner and placed four times from eight starts. This is an interesting mating with Just As Well, as the foal is inbred not only to Northern Dancer (x 4) but also to the broodmare Special - the dam of Nureyev and Fairy Bridge (dam of Sadlers Wells).

Second dam is Popular Girl, a Gr 3 Southern Cross Stakes winner, has produced seven winners including Front Page. An impressive dam-line, third dam is Happy Birthday, a daughter of top broodmare Party Time. Happy Birthday has produced her own daughters at stud, who have gone onto foal horses such as Bold Black Type's Winter Weather and Golden Dawn.

Party Time has an impressive array of descendants with a healthy collection of Black Type winners, of which we will name the stand outs. They include Morisco, Imperial Ice, Sally Bowles, Appelate Court, First Arrival, Let's Rock 'n Roll, Jackson Square, Vodacom Durban July winner Trademark, Super Brand and Water Wise.

Royal Triumph from Bush Hill Stud is by Kahal out of Laplander(ZIM) by Inflation Beater and is a two-time winner. Her first foal Indigo Child by Newton has placed five times from six starts. She has produced a bay colt by Just As Well this season.

Laplander has produced four winners and second dam Eskimo Nel three winners from four runners, including eight time winner Sweden, winner of the Gr 2 OK Grand Challenge. Her other foal was Timber Tycoon, voted Spey Bridge Champion Stayer in 2000.

A 10-time winner, Timber Tycoon's wins include two stayling Listed races and placing twice in the Gr 2 Castle Tankard.

Third dam is Fun House, who also produced four winners including King's Jester, Spey Bridge Champion Two Year Old in 1986, as well as producing another Spey Bridge Champion Three Year Old Colt in 1988.
