KZN Breeder Anton Procter produced a Gr2 place double when both Misty Birnam (by Toreador) and Dawn Calling (by Trippi) each placed on Vodacom Durban July day in their respective high profile Gr2 races, which were Gr1’s in previous years.

A smashing grey two year old colt, Misty Birnam is owned in partnership by Mike De Kock and Anton Procter, and has now won twice and placed twice from four starts. Out of a Verglas mare named In The Mist, the grey colt finished second to Zodiac Ruler under Callan Murray in the Gr2 Durban Golden Horseshoe.

A beautifully-bred filly with a broodmare pedigree, Dawn Calling trained by Duncan Howells flew to finish just a head off Final Judgement under Muzi Yeni.

The Trippi filly out of Danehill Dancer mare, in the process beat Maleficent over the 1400m Gr2 Golden Slipper. Owned by Mr D MacLean, Dawn Calling has been the picture of consistency after winning once and placing five times from all of her starts – four of them in second place.

Other KZN-breds to feature on the day were the Scott Bros in race two – with Desert Fighter and Son Of Silver coming home in a nose finish on the polytrack.

The KZN Yearling Sale Million saw St John Gray’s son of Modus Vivendi, Thewaywemakeem, finish second to Lunar Rush while King Of Kings gelding, The King Of Random, finished in third place.

Well done to all concerned!
