The TBA KZN Sibaya Yearling Sale at Sibiya Casino has concluded on the first day with several of the provinces top sires progeny fetching excellent and competitive prices in a market which has felt the effects of the global financial meltdown in recent years.

Overall on the first day, Philanthropist lead the charge with Lot 82, his Graham’s Charge colt by Grand National consigned by Highlands Farm selling for R1 050 000 to Mario Ferreria. South African Champion 2YO sire, Captain Al had the second highest yearling of the day with Lot 90, his Hidden Silver filly (the dam previously a resident of Rathmor Stud), who fetched R500 000 for trainer Glen Kotzen.

Top five sire Dynasty also had a good day with Lot 133 his colt by Live Your Dreams aptly named Eyes Wide Open going for R850 000 also to Glen Kotzen.

Trippi had filly Lot 57 Red Enchantment by Enchanted Dawn went to the evergreen KZN stalwart owner Alesh Naidoo for R425 000.

Piemonte Stud’s outstanding Judpot colt sold for R170 000 as Lot 141. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Top filly of the sale and the top price for KZN overall was the Backworth entry, Lot 126 by Oratorio named Love Theme who went to Bruce Le Roux for R450 000. The outstanding filly is a half-sister to the big course Scottsville course record holder, Humidor. Crusade is the second leading sire by aggregate behind Philanthropist, with an aggregate of R1 035 055 for 16 horses sold. The Scott Brothers-based Crusade had several well priced individuals which went under the hammer, top of the pile was Lot 71, the aptly named filly Wings Of Honour by the four time winning daughter of Jet Master, Flying Without Wings, who sold to AG Kotze for R250 000.

Rathmor had their Oratorio filly Lot 30, Cicha Musica sell for R220 000 to fellow KZN trainer Duncan Howells. It seems as if Crusades daughters were much in demand with buyers as Lot 93, the Hollywood Strip filly went for R180 000 to Justin Vermaak’s Green Street Bloodstock.

KZN-bred daughters of Oratorio proved popular and Rathmor sold a magnificent half-sister to Victoria Lavelle for R220 000 to Duncan Howells. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Top colt of the KZN stallions was by the late and much missed top five sire Kahal, Lot 95, a colt named Machomouse whose dam Imbiba is a half-sister to the top colt and Grade 2 winner, The Mouseketeer, he went to Dennis Bosch for R115 000. The “hot and happening” Irish Flame had another top colt, Lot 150 by Miss Virgo go for R85 000 to Adrian Van Vuuren’s Misty Meadows operation. KZN Breeder’s chairman Lee Scribante’s Piemonte Stud saw their smart Judpot colt, Lot 141 named Francesco by Malibu Cove go for R170 000 , to Adrian Van Vuuren’s Misty Meadows.

It was encouraging to see a number of top owners and trainers in South African racing buying at the Sibiya Sale: Adriaan Van Vuuren, Alesh Naidoo, Brian Burnard, Glen Kotzen, Gavin Smith,Mario Ferreria, Snaith Racing and Gavin Van Zyl were all in a buying mood, an encouraging indication that this sale and the KZN yearlings that featured in it, are a reliable source of quality bloodstock.
