Gary and Colleen De Klerk of Summerview Stud have welcomed their first foal from Mogok mare Sahara, a flashy filly by Master Of My Fate.

Summerview purchased the mare off the Scott Bros Dispersal Sale for R170 000 in foal to Crusade – Gary says the Crusade is a smashing individual who will be headed to the KZN Yearling Sale in 2020. Sahara is the dam of Gr1 placed and Stakes Winning Matador Man (Toreador).

Matador Man has earned R 1,514,700 in stakes, winning 7 times and placing 7 and preferring a mile. His wins include the Christmas Handicap Listed, winning the KZN Breeders Million Mike and the Secretariat Listed. He has also placed in a Gr1, Gr2 and Gr3.

Sahara in total has produced 5 foals and 4 winners, including Desert Fighter (3 wins) and Sand Princess (Crusade). She has a lovely 2017 unraced full sister to Matador Man to come through.

Gary advises that Sahara will be heading to Kimberley shortly to be covered by Mauritzfontein’s exciting grey Gr1 winning son of Deep Impact, Danon Platina.

Congratulations to all at Summerview Stud!

Matador Man flew home under Lyle Hewitson on a very hot and humid Wednesday at Greyville to give the South African Champion Jockey and Apprentice Jockey his third win in the Christmas Handicap, now a Listed race.

The son of Toreador’s previous visit to Greyville must be scratched as he found traffic and didnt take his customary outside run, instead getting blocked on in the inside under Anton Marcus.

Out of the speedy Sahara by Mogok, who sold to Summerview Stud from Scott Bros at their Dispersal Sale for R170 000 and is now in foal to Master Of My Fate, Matador Man trained by Sean Tarry has earned over R1,3-million in stakes – a tidy return for his connections after his purchase at the 2015 National 2YO Sale for R180 000.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-8963" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/CAN_3035-300x200.jpg" alt="Lyle Hewitson after his win on Matador Man. Image: Candiese Marnewick

This is his second Stakes win – the first being the Secretariat Listed in 2016. Matador Man, voted KZN Breeders Middle Distance Champion now for two years in a row, enjoys the Greyville course when things go his way – he is a winner of the KZN Breeders Million Mile and ran third in the Gr1 Champions Cup.

He has previously achieved under Hewitson, and finished third in the Gr2 Greyville 1900 in May.

By Toreador, who stood at Bush Hill Stud prior to his passing, the connections of Matador Man have enjoyed success with the deceased son of Danehill – winning two Gr1’s with Bull Valley (by Toreador). Breeder of Matador Man, Robin Scott, retained a share and owns him along with Messrs G D Tooch, G L Blank, G J Nassif, J Nassif, Z L Nassif and J Sarkis.

Matador Man’s weanling full sister sold for R125 000 at the Scott Bros Dispersal sale, an impressive filly with plenty of strength and substance.

Matador Man would have earned his breeders a Breeder Premium claim of approximately R6 000.

The former Mike de Kock trained Toreador gelding Misty Birnam registered his first win in the UK when he scored with ease in a Class 5 Handicap over 1400m at Redcar on Saturday.

The gelding was raced here by his breeder Anton Procter in partnership with Mike de Kock.

He won twice in KZN and was runner-up in the Gr2 Golden Horseshoe of 2016 before running third in the Gr1 Premiers Champion Stakes behind Gunner and Zodiac Ruler.

Misty Birnam, now a 4yo, was bred by the Procters and is by the deceased Toreador (Danehill) out of Verglas mare In The Mist.

He is trained now by Ian Williams and owned by Paul Wildes.

In Saturday’s race, his sixth start in the UK, Misty Birnam reared and was slow away under jockey PJ Mcdonald. He hit the front at the 200m to win easing up.

His sire, the Bush Hill-based Toreador, who was euthanaized after an unfortunate accident in December last year, was a Houghton Sales 250 000 guineas yearling, who won 4 races and ran 17 places from 1200m to a mile in England, Ireland and South Africa.

Toreador, an Irish-bred sprinter-miler by Danehill, won three races in South Africa having been imported here after his two-year-old season in Ireland in which he won one race. He was trained by Mike de Kock and besides his wins, his best achievements were runner up finishes in all of the Gr1 Gold Challenge over 1 600m, the Gr2 Hawaii Stakes also over 1600m and the Gr2 Sentinel Stakes over 1 200m. He also ran third in South Africa’s premier mile, the L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate.

He started his stud career in 2005 in the Western Cape and produced our Champion 2yo Colt of 2010, Link Man – who was also trained by Mike de Kock – and a host of stakes winners.

Toreador is the sire of multiple KZN Breeders Award winner Matador Man and last season’s twice Gr1 winning 2016/17 KZN Sprint Champion, Bull Valley.

He produced multiple Graded Stakes winners including the fast Lazer Beat, Jackadore, She’s A Stunner, Prospect Strike, Rikitikitana, Las Ramblas, Deliver The Power, Roc ‘n Rose, Prince Paseo and Straight Forward, amongst others.

Remarks from the website of Misty Birnam’s trainer: “Bought at the Newmarket Guineas HIT Sale in May 2018. Group One placed as a juvenile in South Africa, he ran at Goodwood last time in the Magnolia Cup and came a fine second over 5.5f. He backed that up with a first UK win in first time cheekpieces at Redcar (25th August). Latest handicap mark 70.”

Pat and Lloyd Lunn are having a golden run at the moment from a small stable, and with another double yesterday at Scottsville, their KZN-bred juvenile filly impressed with a very fast win leading from start to finish over the 1000m.

Satara, by Toreador out of an Elusive Quality mare Sarasini, won clear by over a length under Keagan De Melo. The filly, owned by syndicate Messrs R R Naidoo, S M Fuhri, P L Lunn, P J Maujean P C Bentley & Miss K J Bentley, looks a smart one for breeder Mr Bruce Le Roux of Spring Valley Stud.

The filly sold as Lot 76 at the 2017 KZN Yearling Sale for R55 000, and is the first produce of her Australian dam.

Her dam is a winner and a half-sister to Stakes Placed son of Sadlers Wells, A Fist Of God – and in turn their dam is Hula Angel – a winner of the Gr1 Irish 1000 Guineas. It is a pedigree filled with Black Type and another interesting sight under the fourth dam is American stallion and multiple Gr1 winner, Spend A Buck. He won three Gr1’s including the Kentucky Derby and was voted Horse of the Year with 10 wins under his belt.

In the process, Satara didnt only win the stake of R62 500, but the earned the BSA Maiden Juvenile Plate bonus of R40 000 in addition for her owners, an incentive run by Bloodstock South Africa for qualifying 2017 BSA Yearling Sale graduates.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-7715" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/R2-Sitara-leadin.jpg" alt="The delighted winning owners! Image: Candiese Marnewick

Toreador sadly passed away in December 2017 after he injured himself, and produced two Gr1 winners in Bull Valley and Link Man; he also produced his fair share of very fast fillies, including the brilliant Lazer Star – and Bruce Le Roux happens to have her full sister at Spring Valley Stud amongst his broodmare band. Bruce finished the season on an amazing statistic of 49.1% winners to runners produced, and this season is on an admirable 33.3%.

Amongst his horses that continue to impress is the evergreen London Call, whilst Bruce and Tinus Gericke race the as yet unbeaten filly Hashtagyolo who will be aiming for the Triple Crown in Johannesburg this season.

Well done to all concerned.

Former Mike de Kock assistant Nathan Kotzen finally broke the ice in his new role as trainer for his own account when the Toreador colt Cumulus won the third race at Scottsville on Sunday.

A relieved looking ‘Natie’ said that the 3yo colt had shown some good work at home, but was surprised to see him win first up, as he said it was difficult to know what they will do at races. He was easy to back, despite the services of Anthony Delpech, and ran on well to win the 1200m Maiden Plate.

Owner Alderman Rob Haswell, former Municipal Manager of Msundizi Municipality, was away in the USA visiting family, but breeder Anton Procter was on hand to lead the colt in.

The colt is impeccably bred by Anton Procter, out of an Invincible Spirit mare Celestial Cloud – who happens to be a half-sister to multiple Graded Stakes placed Ideal World filly, Patchit Up Baby. The dam of Celestial Cloud and Patchit Up Baby is Qui Liz – a half-sister to successful stallion import Qui Danzig.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-7014" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/R3-Cumulus.jpg" alt="Cumulus makes it look easy, winning his maiden impressively under Anthony Delpech.
Anton Procter has had great success with Toreador, breeding the likes of Hong Kong export Misty Birnam and Trading Profit amongst others.

Mwetwood Stud, owned by Ms Nothemba Malonzi, sold a full brother this year to Cumulus for just R50 000 at the 2017 KZN Yearling Sale. As luck would have it, Nathan Kotzen purchased Ms Malonzi’s first yearling to be sold in South Africa by a black female at Nationals in April.

Nathan Kotzen was assistant trainer to Mike de Kock at Summerveld for 16 years, but went on his own earlier this year after the champion trainer made a business move to close his satellite yard down.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-7015" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/IMG_9141.jpg" alt="The full brother to Cumulus sold for just R50 000 at the 2017 KZN Yearling Sale.
At the time De Kock commented: “Nathan has worked with some of the best horses in the world, let alone the country. He’s a top horseman in his own right, he has the credentials and is well placed to make his mark. He won’t start off without support, I have left a few of my own horses with him and so has the Slack family. We wish him all the best in his new career.”

Kotzen has been closely involved with the likes of champions Ipi Tombe, Grey’s Inn, Irish Flame, Bold Silvano, Victory Moon, Kildonan and Flight Alert.

Kotzen hails from a family steeped in racing. His Dad, also Natie, was a jockey, his late brother Grant was a jockey, his borther Glen is a top trainer and another brother Darren is a farrier.

Nathan has also worked for David Payne, Pat Shaw and Pat Lunn and is on record as saying his most memorable day was when Grey’s Inn won the 2004 Vodacom Durban July.

Congratulations to Nathan Kotzen!

Toreador’s outstanding sprinting son and dual Gr1 winner this season, Bull Valley bred by Ambiance Stud (and trained by Champion Sean Tarry), won the the Cape Breeders Award last night for Champion Sprinter.

A strong contender for the upcoming Equus Awards (the previous year currently held by KZN-bred Talktothestars) Bull Valley gave his Bush Hill Stud resident sire, his third career Gr1 win victory in the process.

Bull Valley held off stiff competition in both the Gr1 Tsogo Sun Sprint and Mercury Sprint, to win going away. It was the sixth career win for him, with his outstanding race record showing the four year old gelding to be only out of the money on one occasion from ten starts.

Toreador has had a fabulous season once again; his son Matador Man a winner of the KZN Breeders Million Mile and placing third in the Gr1 Champions Cup in a very strong field, after standing in the stalls and losing approximately five lengths at the start.

Both Bull Valley and Matador Man share similar ownership, with Jonathan Nassif enjoying a tremendous Champions Season with both.

Toreador will be represented by four Lots at the upcoming National 2YO Sale. The sire of numerous Graded Stakes winners, he stands for a fee of R20 000 this season at Bush Hill Stud.

The stable of Paul Peter stunned with a winning double from his raiders, including the Arc-En-Ciel bred Fort Ember – a grand-daughter of Kahal who took home the Gr2 Gold Bracelet from favourite Nightingale by two lengths. Other KZN horses to impress was Scott Bros’ Matador Man who ran a phenomenal third in the Gr1 Champions Cup, after not jumping out the stalls on terms and trailing by four or five lengths. His Crusade half-brother Subtropical also caused a stir when the handsome colt won the second race of the day – giving Crusade his seventh winner of the season (six in South Africa).

The day started off with Subtropical in Race 2 winning in the Burnard colours of the famous red, white and blue “V” silks, in partnership with breeder Robin Scott of Scott Bros. It is the first Crusade to have won that is raced by his breeder.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-6860" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/IMG_3008-subtropical.jpg" alt="Subtropical (closest) wins for Brian Burnard and Robin Scott. The half-brother to Matador Man gave Crusade his 7th winner. Image: Candiese Marnewick

The half-brother to Gr1 placed Matador Man flew up to the finish over 1600m, with a Middlefield-bred Byword finishing third and First Crusade, under star jockey Anthony Delpech, finishing fourth.

This is the seventh winner for Gr1 Middle Park Stakes winner Crusade (sixth in South Africa with Black Type Butchie Boy winning in Zimbabwe) for the season.

Subtropical’s dam Sahara (by Mogok) is proving herself to be a broodmare of note – producing three runners and three winners – Desert Fighter, his full brother Matador Man and Subtropical.

A smashing full sister by Crusade to Subtropical sold to the Tawny Syndicate in May at the National Yearling Sale for R200 000 – who have links to Matador Man (by Toreador).

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-6862" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/IMG_4043-matadorman1.jpg" alt="Matador Man looking a picture in the Gr1 Champions Cup parade ring. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Sahara herself raced for Dennis Drier, a speedy four-time winner who placed second in multiple Gr2 and Gr3 races. Robin Scott has always been adamant that the impeccably bred Mogok, who has produced four Gr1 winners – two of those in America – will be a broodmare sire in future to be reckoned with. Sahara’s four yearlings that have sold at sales have averaged an impressive R202 500 each.

After the running of the Darley Arabian (Listed), where AP Answer’s Cutting Edge finished third behind Maximizer for owner Alesh Naidoo and KZN stalwart No Worries in fourth for the Burnards, the Sean Tarry-trained Matador Man impressed with a third in a very strong Gr1 winning field of the Champions Cup.

Slow out of the stalls when the gates crashed open, Secretariat Listed and Million Mile winner Matador Man lost approximately five lengths at the start, under a clever ride from S’manga Khumalo the Toreador gelding quickly caught up to the pack.

Matador Man flew up to finish in third in front of multiple Gr1 winner Bela-Bela and just two lengths off the winner Sail South and Gr1 Gold Challenge winner Captain America, leaving the likes of Gr1 Vodacom Durban July winner Marinaresco and Gr2 winner Ten Gun Salute in his wake.

We can look forward to much more to come from the son of Toreador in the future – partly owned by breeder Robin Scott, along with the owners of dual Gr1 winner Bull Valley (by Toreador).

Bush Hill resident sire Toreador has had a sparkling season indeed, with two Gr1 wins from son Bull Valley.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-6863" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/lot149-saharafilly.jpg" alt="The outstanding full sister to Subtropical by Crusade, and the half-sister to Matador Man, sold for R200 000 at the 2017 National Yearling Sale.
The Gr2 Gold Bracelet was won by a grand daughter of Kahal, Fort Ember, in a double for the raiding Paul Peter stable.

Going off at 16/1, Fort Ember beat Nightingale by almost two lengths with KZN-bred Gr3 winner, the beautifully-bred Summerhill-bred Witchcraft by Kahal, finishing in third for the Sean Tarry stable just two lengths off.

Witchcraft carries an impeccable pedigree; out of a Kingmambo mare Deceptive Charm – in turn out of a Sadlers Wells / Mill Reef mare.

Her third dam, Gr2 winner Fleur Royale, was the 4th Top Rated 3-y-o filly in Ireland in 1986. The female line has produced sires Levmoss, Ascot Gold Cup winner Le Moss and South African champions Mosszao and Autumn Lodge.

Day two of the Gold Cup festival continues today, with a number of Graded Stakes races on the cards. Congratulations to all concerned above.

See you at Greyville!

Bush Hill Stud’s son of Danehill, Toreador, secured his third career Gr1 win at stud, and the second for the handsome Bull Valley of the season in yesterday’s Gr1 Mercury Sprint.

Bred by Marianne Thompson of Ambiance Stud who celebrated her birthday yesterday, Bull Valley is owned in partnership by PCS (Pty) Ltd (Nom: Mr P Botha) & Messrs G L Blank, Z L Nassif & J Sarkis – three of the syndicate and their trainer Sean Tarry have also had recent success with Secretariat Stakes and Million Mile winner, Matador Man – another son of Toreador bred by Scott Bros.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-6833" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/IMG_6596-bullvalley.jpg" alt="Bull Valley getting plenty of attention after his win from the owners. Image: Candiese Marnewick

This was the sixth career win for Bull Valley who is a previous winner of the Gr3 Man O’ War Sprint, and put his name in lights when he galloped to an emphatic victory in the Gr1 Tsogo Sun Sprint, where Gr2 winner Search Party has now finished second to him twice in both Gr1 victories. Bull Valley has also placed second in the Gr2 Merchants, and winner of the Golden Loom Handicap.

Bull Valley is likely to be the winner of the Equus Champion Sprinter Award in August – a title currently lying with KZN-bred Talktothestars.

Bull Valley is out of Star Of Liberty by Saumarez, he sold for R180 000 on the BSA National Yearling Sale and took his earnings to R1 611 125 with his sixth win and three places from just 10 starts.

The ever consistent Toreador is on 30% winners to runners, and must be one of the most value-for-money sires in the country.

He stood for R20 000 last season, and has produced Gr1 winner Link Man, the brilliantly fast filly and 7-time winner Lazer Star, Jackodore, Deliver The Power, She’s A Stunner, Rikitikitana and Hong Kong-based Misty Birnam, amongst many others.

Toreador is the most successful son of Danehill to have stood his stud career in South Africa.
