Candice Dawson enjoyed the honour of saddling the first winner of KZN Galileo stallion The Assayer, whose son Lumber Jackaroo stormed to victory in the first race at Turffontein on Thursday evening.

Based at Yellow Star Stud, The Assayer stood his first season in 2014 and only produced 6 foals in his first crop.

Bred on the Galileo x Danehill cross that has produced Frankel and numerous other champions, his 2018 fee was R10 000.

Improving smartly at his second start and stepping up to the mile, Lumber Jackaroo came home powerfully in the Turffontein opener under Denis Schwarz for trainer Candice Dawson.

The Spring Valley Syndicate bred grey gelding is out of the six-time winner Forest Lecture, a daughter of Lecture.

The Assayer had an eyecatching Barrier Trial winner with Thomas Shelby, trained by Ivan Van Wyk for breeders Yellow Star Stud and owner Mr A F J Duncan.

The juvenile colt looks a smart prospect, finishing first by almost two lengths. Another that is close to winning from trainer Craig Mayhew is Flirty Girty, who has finished second in her last two starts. Also bred by the Spring Valley Syndicate, the three year old is out of a Dominion Royale mare.

<img decoding="async" class="size-large wp-image-9038" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/Barrier-Trial-Thomas-Shelby1-1024x683.jpg" alt="Thomas Shelby looks another impressive prospect from The Assayer. Image: Candiese Marnewick

The Assayer sold for R1-million at the National Yearling Sale and began his training career with Charles Laird for the Markus Jooste and Bernard Kantor racing partnership.

The handsome grey later relocated to Mike De Kock, racing 10 times to win once and placed twice in two Gr1’s – the Golden Horseshoe and Premier’s Championship. He placed nine times in total. An injury forced an early retirement.

His dam Crystal Charm made two appearances as a two year old in the UK, placing in both with Listed status. She was sent to Hong Kong, finishing second to Fairy King Prawn at Sha-Tin in the Hong Kong Sprint by a length.

<img decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-9039" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/IMG_7607-theassayer-196x300.jpg" alt="The Assayer, bred on the same cross that produced the great Frankel. Image: Candiese Marnewick

A year later she finished with the same result in the same race, and sent back to Ireland for stud duties.

Sold in foal to Cadeaux Genereux, she was then sent to Australia where she was covered by Galileo.

The Cadeaux Genereux mating produced Les Alizes, in turn the dam of 4-time winning Arrived Ahead in Hong Kong; also placing in the Gr3 Sha-Tin Vase.

A dam-line bursting with Gr1 winners, it includes the likes of half-siblings four-time Gr1 winner Timely Writer and dual Gr1 winner Timely Assertion – both found under the second dam Timely Tammy.

Others include Wild Wolverine, champion filly Indian Skimmer, Dark Mirage, Missy’s Mirage, sires Bluebird, Java Gold and Madeglia d’Oro, and local Gr1 Mercury Sprint winner All Will Be Well.

Mooi River farm, and long-time KZN Yearling Sale stalwarts, Yellow Star Sale will be represented by six quality yearlings at the 2018 KZN Yearling Sale, set to take place on the 5th and 6th of July this year.

Two of the draft are sired by the farm’s resident young Galileo son The Assayer. This pair includes a bay filly (Lot 29) out of four time stakes winner Sheikitupbaby, whose victories included the Listed Spook Express Handicap. This is the same family as short-lived Cape Guineas winner Domino Man and seven time stakes winner Storm Champ.

The Assayer is also represented in the Yellow Star draft by a colt (Lot 210) out of the exceptionally well related Jet Master mare Jillnaar. The latter is out of a half-sister to New Zealand champion and multiple G1 winner King’s Chapel and this is also the family of hugely influential sire Mummy’s Pet.

Middle Park Stakes winner Crusade has made a bright start to his stud career, and has been represented by stakes winners in each of his first two crops to race. The son of Mr Greeley has two here –a half-sister to 4 winners including seven time stakes winner Furious Dancer (Lot 174), and a colt out of a winning National Assembly half-sister to millionaire Kangaroo Jack (Lot 251).

Final two in the Yellow Stud draft are both sired by the farm’s resident sire, and Equus Champion, Kildonan. First of these is a filly (Lot 228) from the same family as legendary champion Horse Chestnut, while the Kildonan colt in the draft (Lot 263) is a half-brother to the very durable Panza and is out of a daughter of G1 winning sprinter Nobely Born.

Crusade’s dual Gr1 winning Galileo half-sister, Seventh Heaven, placed fourth in the Gr1 Breeders Cup Filly & Mare Turf, whilst Flying The Flag’s full sister by Galileo, Rhododendron has been nominated for a Cartier Award in the Champion 2YO Filly category.

Under Ryan Moore, Seventh Heaven finished one and a quarter lengths in fourth place at Santa Anita over 2000m in the exclusive Gr1 Breeders Cup Filly & Mare Turf. The filly has now had four firsts, including two Gr1’s – the Irish Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks, and placed twice from nine starts. The winner of the Breeders Cup Filly & Mare Turf had previously finished third behind Seventh Heaven in her winning Yorkshire Oaks victory, where the now retired Found (winner of the Gr1 Prix De l’Arc de Triomphe) finished second.

A son of Mr Greeley standing at Scott Bros, the handsome black stallion with no white markings to be found – Crusade – covered full books each year and his first juvenile runners should hit the South African tracks very soon. A Gr1 Middle Park Stakes winner, Crusade stands for R20 000 and was the second leading freshman sire at the National Yearling Sale in April.

Full sister to Flying The Flag, Gr1 Fillies Mile winner Rhododendron has been nominated for a Cartier Award in the Champion 2YO Filly category.

Flying The Flag’s full sister has been nominated amongst three of Aiden O’ Brien’s charges for the Cartier Awards. Rhododendron is up against Lady Aurelia, Brave Anna and Roly Poly.

Out of triple Gr1 winning Pivotal mare Halfway To Heaven and a three parts sister to Photo Call (sharing the speedy Cassandra Go in the female line), Rhododendron won the Gr1 Fillies Mile and Gr2 Debutante Stakes, as well as a third in the Gr1 Moyglare. She has yet to be out of the money from all five of her starts.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-3843 " src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/IMG_5168-theassayer-866x1024.jpg" alt="The Assayer at Yellow Star Stud, a son of Galileo.
Flying The Flag, standing at Bush Hill Stud, has received an impressive book of mares – amongst them Look Sharp – the dam of The Mouseketeer and Aramouse, sisters to sires Biarritz and Vercingetorix, as well as Plutonium – the dam of the speedy Trippi horse Orion Quest and King Neptune.

The Flying The Flag syndicate are offering an incentive of R100 000 to the breeder that produces the first Graded Stakes winner by Flying The Flag. He stands for a fee of R20 000.

Galileo has featured prominently this year, not only with his own progeny but his brilliant son Frankel is performing brilliantly at stud as well has he did on the racetrack, with 18 individual winners, three of them Group Winners.

With South African mares Val De Ra and Chocolicious both covered by Frankel in his first season, Val De Ra’s daughter Miss Frankel has gone into training with Dennis Drier, whilst Backworth’s brilliant Gr1 Kahal mare Chocolicious, has seen her Frankel daughter come full circle after being exported from Australia back to Mike De Kock’s stable in South Africa.

She was the top selling Frankel filly in the Southern Hemisphere at the time, knocked down for $610 000 to Shadwell.

KZN stands two sons of Galileo – the handsome grey Gr1 placed horse at Yellow Star Stud was the first at stud in South Africa – The Assayer, out of a Danehill mare like Frankel, is covering his second season this year and Bush Hill Stud’s international Group winning Flying The Flag is the second son of Galileo to join the KZN sire ranks.

Another of Scott Bros’s stallions – French Gr3 winner Eightfold Path has had his half-brother by Galileo place in a Listed race last week, named Diodorus.

The dam’s of Crusade (La Traviata) Flying The Flag (Halfway To Heaven) and Eightfold Path (Divine Proportions) have all been returned to Galileo since which should see further good racing news in the future.

KZN has a lot be excited about in the future with a very exciting band of young stallions in the province.

World Champion sire Galileo achieved the remarkable in the Arc this year, siring the first three past the post of the great historical French race. Galileo is the sire of The Assayer (Yellow Star Stud) and Flying The Flag (Bush Hill Stud) standing in KZN.

Four-year-old filly Found, last year’s Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Turf winner, led a sensational 1-2-3 finish for trainer Aidan O’Brien when she took the €5 million Gr1 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Europe’s premier race at Chantilly.

Owned by Coolmore and partners and ridden by Ryan Moore, Found snapped a five-race string of seconds when she took over from pacesetter Vedevani and then held off stablemates Highland Reel and Order of St George to get the victory. The three top finishers were sired by Coolmore’s internationally successful stallion Galileo.

Postponed, the 2-1 favorite to stay unbeaten in five starts this year, was alongside Found in the straight but failed to kick on and finished fifth.

Ideally positioned in midfield along the rail early, Found came out to challenge for command in the straight after unleashing a brilliant rally from more than a quarter-mile out. She easily overhauled Vedevani and stayed on strongly for her third win at the highest level.

Found covered 2,400 meters (about 1 1/2 miles) in 2:23.61 on turf rated as good, improving to 6-10-2 from 19 starts.

An unlucky ninth behind winner Golden Horn in last year’s Arc, Found was a scintillating victress two starts later in the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Keeneland, where she outbattled that rival to a half-length triumph. She could return for this year’s edition of the race Nov. 5 at Santa Anita Park.

Michael Tabor, a co-owner in the top three Arc finishers, expressed his awe to England’s Press Association.

“First, second, and third in the Arc—it’s unbelievable,” he said. “It’s just incredible. Words can’t describe it. It’s just amazing.

“This is the time of year for (Found). We knew we had a chance, but this is the Arc and it’s a tough race. It’s unreal. She’s a hardy, tough filly. I don’t have to say anything because her results speak for themselves, so it’s fantastic.”

Tabor campaigns Found and Highland Reel with Susan Magnier and Derrick Smith as part of the Coolmore partnership and the trio partners with Lloyd Williams of Australia, the majority owner in Order of St George.

Flying The Flag has his first mares confirmed in foal at Bush Hill Stud.
O’Brien said the Arc had always been a goal for Found, who won at 5-1 odds.

“We’ve had our eye on this for a long time,” O’Brien said. “When Ryan rode her as a 2-year-old and said she could win an Arc—he was obviously right.”

Found won the Gr1 Prix Marcel Boussac as a 2-year-old. She came into this year’s Arc on the back of five runner-up finishes in Gr1 races, including her finish three-quarters of length behind Almanzor in the QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes last time out Sept. 9. That race was preceded by the Darley Yorkshire Oaks, Prince of Wales’s Stakes, Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Cup, and Tattersalls Gold Cup.

“We came here very hopeful after a good run last time,” O’Brien said.

Dual Derby winner Harzand finished ninth in the Arc, and Makahiki, carrying Japan’s decades-long hope of an Arc win, came in 14th in the field of 16.

Found was bred in Ireland by Roncon, Wynatt, and Chelston, a group associated with Coolmore. Her dam is English and Irish Gr1 winner and highweight Red Evie (Intikhab), also the dam of Gr3-winning full sisters Best in the Word and Magical Dream.

“It’s the race that all of America watches and obviously Europe does, too, so the whole world is watching,” Tabor said of the Arc. “It’s a special race to say the least.”

Aiden O’Brien trains Flying The Flag’s full sister, Gr2 winner and Gr1 placed Rhododendrum. International Group winner Flying The Flag’s first mares have been confirmed in foal this season at Bush Hill Stud whilst The Assayer is covering his second year at Yellow Star Stud this season.

The grey stallion is Gr1 placed in both the Premier’s Champion Stakes and Golden Horseshoe Sprint, and bred on the same lines as the great Frankel, both being out of Danehill mares. The Assayer defeated the likes of Gold Onyx, The Mouseketeer, English Garden, Copper Parade and UAE Guineas Prep winner and Dubai Group placed Zanzamar.

Three of KZN’s young sires have their juvenile siblings making starts in Group races in the upcoming months – among them Crusade, Eightfold Path and Flying The Flag. Interestingly, all three siblings are by super-sire Galileo, all in training with Aiden O’ Brien and all owned in partnership by Mrs John Magnier, Michael Tabor & Derrick Smith.

Crusade’s half-sister and 2-time winning Seventh Heaven, after winning the Oaks Trial Listed has been entered into the Gr1 Darley Irish Oaks at the Curragh mid-July as well as the Gr3 Irish Stallion Farms Give Thanks Stakes in August. She ran in the Gr1 Investec Oaks only to be pulled up out of the race at the beginning of June, which Minding won.

Gr1 Middle Park Stakes winner Crusade has seen his well stamped yearlings being hotly received at the National Yearling Sale and KZN Yearling Sale, yielding impressive averages at both sales – Nationals he averaged R160 000 for 18 yearlings sold, and almost R100 000 at the KZN Yearling Sale for 16 yearlings sold.

Eightfold Path’s half-brother impressed on debut – Diodorus is also partly owned by breeder Flaxman Holdings, was given a sympathetic ride to let the colt enjoy himself under a hands and heels ride. He finished third without pressure, the colt out of 5-time Gr1 winning Divine Proportions holds a Gr1 entry in the Vincent O’Brien National Stakes to be run at The Curragh on 11 September.

French Gr3 winner Eightfold Path by Giant’s Causeway has had his yearlings snapped at the Nationals and KZN Yearling Sales – the Nationals saw an outstanding filly for R325 000 sold to Louis Goosen and the KZN Yearling Sale, a super colt bred by Roski Stud sold for R160 000 whilst Scott Bros had Passioneight (out of a full sister to Gr1 Scarena) sell for R125 000.

Bush Hill Stud’s new stallion prospect for 2016 sees his younger full-sister Rhododendron entered for the Gr2 Lowther Stakes at York in August. The filly finished second on debut in her only start at the Curragh over seven furlongs. She looks to follow in her big brother’s footsteps, a winner of the Gr2 International Stakes, he won by an incredible four lengths.

They are out of super mare and triple Gr1 winner Halfway To Heaven, a daughter of Europe’s top sire and broodmare sire Pivotal – in turn out of the brilliant Cassandra Go.
Foals from Yellow Star Stud, including progeny by Duke Of Marmalade and The Assayer. These are the first foals from both stallions.

Yellow Star Stud introduce a few of their foals for the season – first crop for both sires including Drakenstein’s Duke Of Marmalade and Yellow Star Stud’s grey son of Galileo, The Assayer.

Imported in utero to South Africa and bred on the same famous Galileo/Danehill cross that has produced numerous champions, including the great Frankel with a TimeformRating of 143, The Assayer is the first son of Galileo to go stud in South Africa.

He sold for R1-million at Nationals and began his training career with Charles Laird for the Jooste / Kantor racing partnership, later relocated to Mike De Kock, racing 10 times to win once (by almost four lengths) and place twice in two Gr1’s – the Golden Horseshoe and Premier’s Championship. The Assayer placed nine times in total but unfortunately an injury prevented The Assayer fulfilling a promising race career.

His dam Crystal Charm made two appearances as a two year old in the UK, placing in both with Listed status.

She was sent to Hong Kong, finishing second to Fairy King Prawn at Sha-Tin in the Hong Kong Sprint by a length.

A dam-line bursting with Gr1 winners, it includes the likes of half-siblings Timely Writer (4 x Gr1 wins) and dual Gr1 winner Timely Assertion – both found under the second dam Timely Tammy.

Others include Wild Wolverine, champion filly Indian Skimmer, Dark Mirage, Missy’s Mirage, sires Bluebird, Java Gold and Madeglia d’Oro, and local Gr1 Mercury Sprint winner All Will Be Well. Galileo has been Champion sire in 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. His is the sire-of-sires of New Approach, Teofilo, Frankel and Cape Blanco, and produced South African champion filly Igugu.

Galileo’s stud fees in 2014 were reportedly in the vicinity of 350 000 Euros per mare covered, whilst Frankel stands for a fee of £125,000 once again this season.

The Assayer stands for a fee of R5 000.
