Hadlow resident sire The Apache has had two winners in two days, impressive from his first crop with limited numbers.

Rochester, trained by Vaughan Marshall and owned in partnership by Vaughan and Miss J Jones, it was the first win after after placing five times previously in Kenilworth and Durbanville and he did so emphatically, cleaning up by over 8 lengths over the 1600m trip at Fairview on Friday.

Saturday saw Mike De Kock’s aptly named Arlington’s Revenge win his third race from six runs. Owned in partnership with his daughter Kirsten De Kock, Arlington’s Revenge, out of a Muhtafal mare, won over 1600m at Turffontein.

Both 3yo’s were bred by Rosedene Stud, where The Apache initially began his stud career after relocating to his farm of birth, Scott Bros. With Highdown Stud winding down their breeding activities, The Apache was relocated to Hadlow Stud for the 2018 season and he has settled in beautifully.

Trained by Gavin Van Zyl who put the horse on the map in South Africa, with Gr1 wins and Equus Award in hand, The Apache was bought into by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum with prominent Hong Kong owner Mr Winston Chow.

Sent into training with Mike De Kock, the Mogok entire was exported to Dubai where he won the Gr2 Al Rashidaya, and placed in numerous Gr1’s. He won in England, and was exported to America – where he crossed the line first in the Gr1 Arlington Million, only to lose the race in the boardroom after.

Sold for just R80 000 at the National 2YO Sale, The Apache retired as one of South Africa’s leading earners with over R17-million in stakes. He descends from one of Scott Bros founding families, and his ancestors including the great race filly Bold West.

The Apache has been Equinome Tested and his results show him to have the leading elements to be a top sire – which is reflecting in his current results at stud. From just 11 runners he has now produced 7 winners.

A Scott Bros’ bred son of Mogok out of a Dolpour mare (and a pure Scott Bros pedigree stretching back over 50 years to their founding dam) who was voted Equus Champion 3YO Colt of his year, his story is a special one – selling for just R80 000 at the National 2YO Sale, he went on to earn over R17-million making him one of the highest Stakes earners standing at stud in South Africa.

Amongst the mares he has covered this season is a Zabeel mare specifically imported for him by owner Mr Winston Chow, named Divine Proportion who has foaled a beautiful baby to The Apache this season at Hadlow Stud, and the other is the dam of Gr1 winner Wild One (by Mogok), a cross that has also produced Save The Rhino.

Globetrotting from South Africa to Dubai, England and America – The Apache crossed the line first in the Gr1 Arlington Million, placing in England and winning the Gr2 Al Rashidiya in Dubai and placed second in two major Dubai Gr1 races – not to forget his Gr1 wins in South Africa and numerous Group Places.

His produce results on the track reflect his superb Equinome test results which Hong Kong owner Mr Winston Chow had performed on the stallion and his results are impressive.

Owned in partnership by a syndicate owned in majority by Winston Chow, The Apache is off to an impressive start at stud with a lifetime winners to runners percentage of 36%.

The son of Mogok has a phenomenal race record and earned R17-million in stakes, in a career that saw him race on three continents and win at the highest levels, including the Gr2 Rashidiyah (Dubai), first across the line in the Gr1 Arlington Million (USA) and a winner of the Gr1 Daily News 2000 and Gr1 Champions Cup in South Africa and placed in many more.

Voted Equus Champion 3YO Colt in SA from 2010-2011, he won seven races over 1600m – 2000m. The Apache began his stud career in the Cape at Rosedene Stud and relocated in 2016 to KZN. He had his first juvenile winner in April this year and very recently at Kenilworth over 1600m with Potawatomi.

A R120 000 National Yearling Sale graduate won the 1400m contest in the Leslie Logan silks from a wide draw and looks a filly set to go over more ground.

It was appropriate that Gavin van Zyl saddled The Apache’s first winner as he guided the son of Mogok throughout his illustrious career on South African soil.

The Apache has gone full circle as he was bred by Scott Bros at their Highdown Stud, from resident stallion Mogok out of Apache Rose (by Dolpour). He went under the hammer at the 2009 BSA Two Year Old sale and was knocked down for R80 000 to Winston Chow.

Being earmarked for export to Hong Kong meant that local conditioner Gavin van Zyl had to plan his colt’s career carefully, as Hong Kong Jockey Club rules preclude imports of horses with more than 17 starts. The Apache progressed rapidly, winning his maiden at the third time of asking and soon proved himself in stakes company, winning the Gr2 Dingaans in November 2010 by 1.25 lengths.

Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum purchased a 50% interest in the colt and he set sail for Dubai in early 2012, having been declared Equus Champion 3yo Colt and winning six of his 15 starts and accumulating R1,9 million in stakes, including the Gr1 Daily News and the Gr1 Champion Stakes, a fourth place finish in Igugu’s 2011 Durban July and a sixth in the 2012 J&B Met, beaten under two lengths by the star mare.

His next outing was the Gr1 Jebel Hatta on 9 March 2013, where he took on stable mates Masterofhounds and Igugu. It looked all over at the 200m mark, but then Godolphin’s talented filly Shajjhaa swooped to beat him by a narrow 0.75 lengths. The Apache followed up with another good second in the Gr1 Dubai Duty Free on World Cup night, again being denied by the Godolphin runner by 1.75 lengths.

The Apache then boarded a plane for the UK, where he ran 4th under Pat Cosgrave in a Gr2 Sky Bet York Stakes on 27 July 2013, finishing 4 lengths behind the talented Mukhadram from the William Haggas yard.

Mike de Kock’s main objective for the colt had always been the Group 1 Arlington Million and by the time The Apache landed in the United States, he had completed five long distance flights and visited four countries in just over a year! The 31st running of the Gr1 Arlington Million over 2000m took place in Chicago on 17 August 2013 and will no doubt live on in racing folklore. The Apache crossed the line ahead of nearest rival Real Solution, only to lose the race on objection in the boardroom.

The Apache went to stud having raced in SA, UAE, UK & the USA for 7 wins from 1600-2000m at 3 to 5, for earnings of R17 million.  The Equus Champion 3yo colt reached a Timeform  rating of 120 at peak.

The Apache has one lot (#328) in the final session of this week’s CTS April Yearling Sale.

Keep a look out for an outstanding first foal by Crusade out of a full sister to The Apache at the upcoming National  Yearling Sale from Scott Bros.

The following KZN-bred horses consigned to the National 2YO Sale, taking place next month from 17-18 August at the TBA Complex, (except for those highlighted in bold italics which are not registered), are registered with the KZN Breeders Premium Scheme and therefore qualify for the added incentive of running on KZN Breeders Race Day including the Million Mile – a day that sees R2,6 million up for grabs for the winning and placed connections.

Bloodstock South Africa are also offering a lucrative ‘carrot’ for buyers, with 2017 sales graduates grabbing an additional R40 000 in stakes when winning their Maiden Juvenile Plate.

The National 2YO Sale has produced amongst others KZN-breds Gr1 winner and Equus Champion Sprinter Talktothestars, as well as the recent Million Mile winner, Gr1 aimed Matador Man and international globe-trotting multiple Group Winner The Apache who was famously purchased for R80 000 and earned in excess of R17 million – all three horses mentioned bred by Scott Bros. The Apache is represented on this sale by four 2YO’s consigned by Rosedene Stud.

First season sires represented include Redoute’s Promise from Bush Hill Stud – the first son of Australian super sire Redoute’s Choice to retire to stud in South Africa.

His first and only yearling sold this year for R110 000 to John Freeman at the KZN Yearling Sale. He has seven 2YO’s available at this auction, including a Bush Hill-bred half-brother to 3-time winner, Big Si, as Lot 323. Piemonte consign Aldo (Lot 242), a half-brother to the smart juvenile Toreador colt Filippo out of Var speed queen Wishful Eye – a filly that beat Val De Ra. Filippo has won and placed from three of his four starts.

The other to attract attention is of course Noble Tune – the leading freshman sire of the KZN Yearling Sale and selling for a top price at Nationals of R350 000, he has four horses on offer including a Piemonte-bred half-sister (Lot 284 Abelie) to six-time winner Amazing Strike, the latter also Gr2 placed. Noble Tune impressed at the May National Yearling Sale, selling six yearlings for an impressive average of R223 000 each.

Others to turn heads will be the ever consistent Toreador – who has produced dual Gr1 winner Bull Valley this season. Getting Black Type in almost every single one of his crops at stud, Toreador who stands at Bush Hill Stud will have four two year olds on offer.

Spring Valley bring a Toreador colt Galinga (Lot 401) a first foal for a half-sister to Gr1 winner, Exhilaration. This is the immediate family of the brilliant Wendywood, Malteme, Bezanova and Gr1 Vodacom Durban July winner, Power King.

Amongst the Black Type producing mares, Lots 18 Playhouse Mouse, Lot 23 Born A Bully and Lot 366 Sweet Empress attract attention.

Lot 18 from Bush Hill Stud is a Curved Ball half-brother to Gr2 winner The Mouseketeer, Lt Jerry Mouse and Weiho Marwing’s 5-time winner, Aramouse.

Lot 23 is a Eightfold Path half-brother to Gr3 winner The Plunderer, bred and consigned by Clifton Stud.

Lot 366, a filly by Curved Ball is a half-sister to Gr2 winner Tales Of Bravery, as well as Gr3 placed Secret Warning – from the exceptional family of Gypsy’s Warning, Romany Prince, Queen Forever and Surabi.

The Scott Bros home-bred colt ended his career first across the line in the Gr1 Arlington Million and earned R17million in stakes in a career that saw him win and place at the highest level in four leading horse racing countries. The son of Mogok out of Apache Rose by Dolpour sold for just R80 000 at the National 2YO Sale.

The Apache was awarded with Equus Champion 3YO Colt in 2011 after his top class Graded Stakes wins in South Africa prior to leaving for his international campaign. He was the pride of South Africa when he finished first in the Gr1 Arlington Million in the USA for trainer Mike De Kock, only to have the race result changed after interference.

A full sister retained by Scott Bros to their new stallion acquisition and home-bred The Apache, Bold Pocahontas has foaled a Crusade filly last night at Highdown Stud.

It is the first foal for the flashy Bold Pocahontas, who will be continuing the 6th generation dynasty of Scott Bros’ foundation mare Lenore, whose grand-daughter is the great Gr1 winner Bold West – in turn the dam of Sugar Magnolia, West West and West Again. Apache Rose (by son of Sadlers Wells, Dolpour), the dam of Bold Pocahontas and The Apache produced five winners from seven foals and unfortunately passed away in foal to Mogok three years ago.

Its exciting times for Scott Bros, as Crusade’s first crop impressed at sales and saw the Gr1 Middle Park Stakes winners’ yearlings average R160 000 for 18 sold at the National Yearling Sale in April. Crusade’s damline is firing on all cylinders, as his Galileo half-sister Seventh Heaven is now a dual Gr1 winner – including the Gr1 Irish Oaks and recent Gr1 Yorkshire Oaks. Trainer Aiden O’Brien describes her as a big rangy filly and there is a chance she may go to the Breeders Cup for Fillies & Mares on the turf. Dam La Traviata (by Johannesburg) has now produced two Gr1 winners and a Gr2 second placed horse from her first three foals.

A top international Group winning racehorse in four countries, The Apache has returned to his birthplace and stands for a very reasonable fee of R6000 this season. The Apache, who crossed the line first in the Gr1 Arlington Million, has been Equinome tested and his outstanding results mirror his Gr1 winning racing performances – his part owner Winston Chow reports ‘with results indicating that he is top class, i.e Grade 1 in GRV (Genomic Racing Value) and Grade 1 in GBV(Genomic Breeding Value) and is a C-T (likely to produce sprinter milers) for Speed Gene Test’.

The Apache has been tested by Equinome, with results indicating that he is top class, i.e Grade 1 in GRV (Genomic Racing Value) and Grade 1 in GBV(Genomic Breeding Value) and is a C-T for Speed Gene Test, writes Winston Chow.

I see that this is highly significant because Equinome tests all horses worldwide with the same criteria and thus meaning that The Apache has the Best Racing and Breeding genes amongst the best in the world. I copied this from the Plusvital/Equinome website:

“Genomic Breeding Value
The Genomic Breeding Value represents the potential for a broodmare or stallion to produce offspring with a greater aptitude for elite success. This is based on an assessment of the number of favourable genetic variants that an individual may pass on to their progeny. It does not include the additional environmental co-variants used in the Genomic Racing Value which cannot be inherited.
Each horse is given a Genomic Breeding Value (GBV) of 1–4, with an additional value of 1* to indicate Class 1 horses that are at the very top of the range.

Equinome research has determined that the general Thoroughbred population comprises:
20% Class I individuals
30% Class II individuals
30% Class III individuals
20% Class IV individuals”

If one looks at the number of individuals tested by Equinome and the significantly higher elite horses found by genetic testing as compared to the general population, it really says that those horses tested are probably perceived to be better horses already. This is understandable as the test is very expensive and those tested are probably the selected ones. What this means is that there was already a selection process prior to the test and results graded, which means a Grade 1 is of even higher significance.

I use many methods to select horses, and genetic testing is the latest to help me breed and race a horse that I think will be better than not using it.

Breeding characteristics:

I have previously mentioned the three best possible ways to breed to The Apache. That is via Danehill, Bold Ruler and Zabeel.

Zabeel is the one that I believe in and the reasoning is that Zabeel breeds 20% Group One horses with Vice Regal mares. Yes, the general population of horses gives a 0.2% chance of being Group One and you are talking about a one hundred times better odds in a Zabeel/vice Regal mare mating.

I believe Wilwyn might be the key (actually my teacher in pedigree analysis told me)!
As with Danehill, I will just show you the statistics from Equineline. It is always easy to list the Group One horses without mentioning how many times that had been tried. I have attached two statistics, see for yourself!

Here I also name the Group One horses bred this way: Nannina, Pride of Dubai, Shocking, Siyouma, that is 4 Group Ones from 155 foals with Danehill as broodmare sire!
For Danehill as the sire of the broodmare sire: December Draw and Stay with Me are 2 from 311! But this is a young cross with loads of two year olds and three year olds! It can get better!
Now this is the way I use statistics incorporated to pedigree analysis. Add the previous genetic testing indicating the superiority of The Apache, I hope for much better results in getting Group One horses than the general population of 1 in 500ish!
