Brave Tin Soldier’s smart daughter Brave Mary, second in the Emperors Ready to Run Cup, is headed to quarantine at Kenilworth in advance of a long trip through Mauritius to France in late February.

The winner of the Gr1 Allan Robertson Championship will be trained in France for Team Valor International by Alain de Royer-Dupre.

Barry Irwin said “We will start her out in France and see if she fits. We have the option of moving her to America at some stage as well. But with her turn out foot over 1000m to 1200m we are hopeful she can cut it in Europe.”

Consigned by Summerhill Sales on behalf of breeder Rupert Plersch, she was originally purchased on the CTS Johannesburg Ready To Run Sale by Justin Vermaak and won her Gr1 in the care of trainer Paul Matchett.

Her chestnut Await The Dawn half-sister is being consigned by Soetendal at the upcoming CTS Ready To Run Sale as Lot 81.

This is the second KZN-bred filly purchased by Team Valor to be exported to France this year, the first being Summerhill-bred Anna Pavlova who left for France from Mauritius at the end of October. The Gr3 winner is by St Petersburg and sold for a mere R45 000 off the Summerhill Stud Summer Ready To Run Sale. The filly is well related, with leading sire Kahal in her damline.

Both Anna Pavlova and Brave Mary feature as nominees at the KZN Breeders Awards to be held on 2 December.

Team Valor in the past have had numerous success with South African-bred horses, including American Gr1 winning KZN-bred, Gypsy’s Warning.

Another KZN-bred filly, Gr1 Allan Robertson winner Brave Mary has been purchased by Team Valor. The speedy Brave Tin Soldier filly who showed the Allan Robertson field a clean pair of heels, is in training with Paul Matchett.

Brave Mary is out of a Rich Man’s Gold mare Mary Lou, bred by Rupert Plersch and has recorded two wins and two places from five starts. She won the Gr1 at Scottsville by almost two lengths from Green Plains.

She is the second Gr1 winner and the third Gr1 win for sire Brave Tin Soldier, who stands at Summerhill Stud.

The other KZN-bred filly to have been purchased last year is the Gr3 winning daughter of St Petersburg, Anna Pavlova, now a four-time winner for trainer Roy Magner. The filly is owned in partnership by Team Valor International (Nom: Mr B Irwin) & Mrs Vanashree & Mr Anant Singh & Mesdames C Soal & M Soal.

Team Valor have purchased the likes of Gypsy’s Warning amongst many other champions in the past and were responsible for bringing Visionaire to stand at stud in South Africa.

The Roy Magner-trained three-year-old filly Anna Pavlova has become the latest South African-bred horse to be bought by renowned American bloodstock agent, owner and breeder, Barry Irwin.

She will be seen in the familiar red and green colours of Team Valor International on Saturday at Turffontein in the Gr2 Wilgerbosdrift Gauteng Fillies Guineas.

The original owners, Courtney and Megan Soal, have retained a share in the Summerhill-bred daughter of St Petersburg.  Magner remains the trainer, at least for the time being, as there are also overseas aspirations for her.

Anna Pavlova was originally brought for just R45,000 at the Summerhill Farm Sale, despite a classy pedigree. St Petersburg is by Nureyev, and Anna Pavlova’s British-bred dam Shatrang is by Royal Applause out of a full-sister to the successful KZN-based sire Kahal. St Petersburg is the sire of Australian Gr1 winner, Solzhenitsyn.

Irwin said about the well-named filly, “My main reason for the purchase is that filly’s incredible turn of foot. She also has a very powerful body.”

Irwin continued, “The filly was bought to race a few more times in South Africa, with the Gauteng Fillies Guineas first and probably the Gr1 Empress Club on April 15 next. The Gr1 SA Fillies Classic is possible, but I think she is a miler and will have to show us she wants to run further. We plan to send her to Europe by way of Mauritius. We will decide in the fall if we want to give her to Mike de Kock to go to Dubai, or leave her in France to be trained by Andre Fabre.”

Anna Pavlova burst into the classic picture when winning the Gr3 Three Troikas Stakes over 1450m at Turffontein Inside track under JP van der Merwe in her last start on February 11. The slow pace did not suit her that day and she also had to be eased at one stage in the straight.

However, she then displayed an effortless turn of foot and beat the Gr1-placed Visuality by a head, despite giving her 2kg.

Magner said yesterday (Monday) that she had come out of the Three Troikas fine and had been “doing well” at home. He believed she would get the mile as long as she was “ridden cold”, which is her normal strategy and from her wide draw she would have little other option anyway.

Magner was also confident they would go “a proper gallop” on Saturday owing to the prestige of the event which constitutes the joint first leg of the SA Triple Tiara.

In Anna Pavlova’s only meeting with Saturday’s likely favourite, Ektifaa, last October, she received 3,5kg and was beaten two lengths over 1450m.  She has improved since then, but reversing the form is going to be a tough ask. Ektifaa does have a wide draw at least.

The Three Troikas was Anna Pavlova’s third win in succession and her fourth overall in ten career starts. She started at healthy odds of 9/1 and this was probably due to her having taken five starts to win her maiden.

However, Magner knew from day one she would go places. “She was very green in her early starts and used to duck around a lot, otherwise would have won her maiden earlier. It is really her turn of foot near the finish which makes her special,” he said.

She won on the first occasion she was stepped up beyond 1200m. Her wins have all been between 1400m and 1450m and she is yet to attempt further.

Visionaire achieved a 1-2 in the 11th race on J&B Met day, when the Joey Ramsden-trained Mr Wise Guy galloped to a near two length victory from Vilakazi, a son of Visionaire and half-brother to Hong Kong winner, Mighty Emperor.

It was the third career win and the first over 1600m for Mr Wise Guy, who is out of Jet Master mare Catch The Wind, owned in partnership by Mrs Vanashree and Mr Anant Singh, Mrs I Jooste and Mr M J Jooste. From a total of nine starts, the three year old gelding has in addition placed four times. Mr Wise Guy sold at the 2014 CTS Ready To Run Sale for R350 000, his dam is a three parts sister to Gr1 Mercury Sprint winner, Fly By Night.

Brett Crawford-trained Vilakazi, bred by Northfields Stud and owned by Messrs T H Fenner, M O C Wauchope, A R M Wood & Mrs F Samuelson is an exciting individual to watch, having won twice and placed twice from all four of his starts. He has won over 1200m – 1600m and is out of Casey Tibbs mare, Sweet Virginia. Vilakazi was consigned by Drakenstein Stud, and sold for R450 000 off the 2014 National Yearling Sale. Bearing a striking resemblance to his handsome Gr1 King’s Bishop winning sire, Vilakazi shares a dam-line with five-time Gr1 winning mare, Dancewiththedevil.

Visionaire, a son of Grand Slam standing at Summerhill Stud, was last season’s National Champion Freshman Sire and sees him leading the new Three Year Old Sires once more on the National Log by Stakes Earned – with Warm White Night and Querari following suit.

Visionaire’s other more recent winners include his Gr3 placed daughter Lala, and Revelation providing a special win for the partnership of Louis Goosen and Piere Strydom last week – the 150th to date. Revelation is a half-brother to Gr1 winner, Love Struck.

Visionaire stood for a fee of R40 000 last season.
