KZN Breeders enjoyed a very successful sale at Nationals, which achieved outstanding results in a tumultous current economy.

Bloodstock South Africa hailed the sale a “resounding triumph.”

“An outstanding catalogue and some spirited bidding saw the 2023 National Yearling Sale come to a triumphant conclusion late on Saturday afternoon. The two day auction saw gains in aggregate, and average and median prices, while the clearance rate at the sale improved off results seen last year.”

“The sale’s aggregate rose by more than R16 million, with the 2023 National Sale’s gross aggregate reaching R153.8 million, while the average and median rose to R443 228 and R300 000 respectively. The average rose from R357 454 a year ago, while the median price increased from R250 000 from 2022.”

Rathmor Stud took the leading accolades for the top priced colt of KZN, with a smashing colt by Danon Platina knocked down to Form Bloodstock for R725 000.

The colts groom, Zakhele Biyase, echoed the sentiments of the fantastic price and showed his jubilation as he lead the colt out of the ring with a big smile and a fist in the air!

Sold as Lot 325 and out of the beautifully bred Jane S Piddy, this is the family of Nexus, Lady In Black, Lizarre and The Merry Widow. Rathmor’s acquisition of mares from leading families is paying off, and they brought four quality yearlings to the sale to average an impressive R537 500 for each of them – snapped up by the likes of Glen Kotzen, Form Bloodstock, Hollywood Syndicate and Greg Bortz. The balance of the yearlings sold included a Vercingetorix sibling to Gr1 winner Missisippi Burning and Black Type, Mercury Rising.

Tinus Gericke and Bruce Le Roux’s Blue Sky Thoroughbreds brought a draft that they described as “having something for everyone” – and their impressive sales topper for R700 000 was a magnificent flashy bay colt by Gimmethegreenlight out of Kahal mare, Kahula.

After enthusiastic bidding, he was knocked down to the IRC & Krishnan Nagendran. A second produce for the 5-time winning mare, this is a family that has excelled for Bruce Le Roux’s previous Spring Valley farm in the form of Count The Money and Buy And Sell, as well as Bedloe’s Island. Blue Sky sold 14 yearlings for an impressive average of R280 357 each. Blue Sky consistently bring a well made yearling to the sales each year and its paying off in the sales ring and winners box.

Their draft presented on behalf of Agents yielded seven sold for clients for an average of R185 000. Many of them were by two year sire sensation New Predator, which saw 9 sold under the Blue Sky banner for an average of R216 667 each.

Others sold by Blue Sky sires included one by Willow Magic for R170 000, and the other by Hat Puntano for R180 000.

Peter and Jenny Blyth’s Clifton Stud brought another fantastic draft to Germiston; all well grown and well related yearlings who consistently earn their owners cheques and accumulate black type, their top price was for a colt named Hair Trigger, by in form sire Fire Away out of Aziza, sold to Peter Moor for R600 000. Clifton sold the highest priced #kznbred filly of the sale – the workmanlike Mai Sensation – a daughter of Rafeef out of Mai Tai by Vercingetorix. She sold for R500 000 to Greg Bortz.

Clifton achieved an average of R336 429 for seven yearlings sold.

Brett Van Laun of Camargue Stud debuted his Caversham-based farm at Nationals this year, and paid off with a smashing What A Winter colt out of Magic Penny knocked down to Greg Bortz for R600 000. The colts full sister to Black Type and 4-time winner Pretty Penny, whilst the second dam is Lady Lexington.

Brett also sold a super Querari colt, a three parts brother to Gr2 winner Ameena for R300 000 to Alyson Wright, and a beautiful sibling to American Grafitti for R250 000, snapped up by Corne Spies. Whilst it can take a while for new farms to establish themselves in the market, Camargue impressed with eight lots selling for R245 625 each.

Colleen and Gary De Klerk’s draft saw their New Predator out of Lady Carter sell for R180 000; they unfortunately had to withdraw their smashing Lancaster Bomber filly from the Nationals, but keep a look out in the catalogues later this year for Miss Munroe – her fourth dam is Imperious Sue and this is the family of Victory Moon.

Summerhill Equestrian and Gr1 producing sire Act Of War saw four lots sold for an average of R295 000 each. The top priced Act Of War, a colt from Clifton Stud named Peace Treaty, sold for R375 000 to Sean Tarry. This quality colt out of a Gimmethegreenlight mare hails from the Varsfontein family of Kochka, Kissable, Dash For Gretna and Moneycantbuymelove.

Summerhill, Rathmor and Blue Sky Thoroughbreds have invested in the top three sellers of the Cape Mare Sale which took place on Thursday.

Mick Goss’s Summerhill Stud has enjoyed a Gr1 winning season and he invested in a Shadwell mare Lot 5, Masaaquaat (NZ), daughter of speed sire Snitzel in foal to What A Winter. This is the family of co-Champion Australian 2yo colt Invader and was knocked down to Summerhill Stud for R260 000.

Rathmor followed suit with an impeccably bred daughter of Dynasty for R200 000. Out of a Jet Master mare in turn out of the brilliant mare Consensual, Lot 59 Jamaheery consigned by Sandown for Shadwell Stud, this is the female line of Attenborough, Al Sakeet, Just Sensual and Tatler. The Dynasty mare is in foal to dual Gr1 producing Rafeef.

Blue Sky Thoroughbreds bought Dynamic Diana by Dynasty, for R155 000 in foal to One World. A full sister to multiple feature winner Sing Out Loud, this is the family of Gr1 Breeders Cup winner Magnificent Song.

Other KZN Breeders to invest were Summerview, purchasing a full sister to sire Jackson in foal to Master Of My Fate, and Camargue who bought 10-time winner Hurricane Katrina in foal to Querari.

Another mare with KZN roots was sold to Suzette Viljoen for R90 000 – an Australian bred daughter of Frankel out of #kznbred Gr1 winning daughter of Kahal, Chocolicious – bred by Backworth Stud. Mazaaher is in foal to Soqrat.

Breeders in KZN are using the KZN Breeders Premium Scheme to invest into bloodstock and improve the breed. The Scheme has been updated to operate in the form of a voucher system towards the purchase of mares, stallion shares and services – a tremendous advantage to breeders in challenging economic times and more reason to breed in KZN!

Top seller of the inaugural edition was the ‘select mare’ of the June sale catalogue in many people’s opinion.

Petala seen winning the Gr3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery in 2015

Petala (#23) is a stakes winning Captain Al half-sister to the well performed Doublemint and was snapped up by Summerview Stud for R114 000.

Petala won three races, including the 2015 Gr3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery, in the care of Justin Snaith.

She is out of the Tale Of The Cat mare, Nepeta and was bred by Alec Foster, who also raced her in the family’s very familiar scarlet and gold silks.

Summerview’s Colleen de Klerk was thrilled with the purchase and said that the decision to buy was motivated by an intention to upgrade  their current broodmare band.

She gave a thumbs up to the new online platform and said it was ‘both user friendly and exceptionally convenient’.

The scenically beautiful Summerview Stud is nestled in a quiet lane in the middle of Summerveld, and is owned by Colleen and her husband, Gary De Klerk.

The De Klerk’s neighbour, leading breeder Lee Scribante of Piemonte Stud, said that Petala ticked all the boxes and congratulated them on an astute buy.

Scribante also said that the streamlined simplicity and convenience of the sales platform means that even the ‘senior generation’ could use it without aggravation or fear of complications.

“Internationally, it’s been proven to be the way of the future and once market acceptance is there and conditions improve, I have no doubt that it will become the norm,” said Scribante.

Gary and Colleen De Klerk of Summerview Stud have welcomed their first foal from Mogok mare Sahara, a flashy filly by Master Of My Fate.

Summerview purchased the mare off the Scott Bros Dispersal Sale for R170 000 in foal to Crusade – Gary says the Crusade is a smashing individual who will be headed to the KZN Yearling Sale in 2020. Sahara is the dam of Gr1 placed and Stakes Winning Matador Man (Toreador).

Matador Man has earned R 1,514,700 in stakes, winning 7 times and placing 7 and preferring a mile. His wins include the Christmas Handicap Listed, winning the KZN Breeders Million Mike and the Secretariat Listed. He has also placed in a Gr1, Gr2 and Gr3.

Sahara in total has produced 5 foals and 4 winners, including Desert Fighter (3 wins) and Sand Princess (Crusade). She has a lovely 2017 unraced full sister to Matador Man to come through.

Gary advises that Sahara will be heading to Kimberley shortly to be covered by Mauritzfontein’s exciting grey Gr1 winning son of Deep Impact, Danon Platina.

KZN farms Summerview Stud and The Fort will both be represented by a single lot at next week’s Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale.

Summerview Stud will be offering a standout daughter (Lot 425) of triple G1 winning Equus Champion Elusive Fort. The latter is an excellent filly sire, with his daughters including G1 winners Siren’s Call and Lauderdale, as well as current smart performers Elusive Heart and Secret Potion.

The Summerview filly, named No Money Honey, is out of a winning Trippi daughter of Melting Moments. The latter is a nine time stakes winning daughter of champion sire and emerging broodmare sire Captain Al who is a ¾ sister to Irridescence Stakes winner Leeward.

No Money Honey is from an excellent family, with her relatives including the standout sprint stars Fov’s Favourite and Shea Shea, among many others.

The Fort is also represented by a quality yearling at the 2018 National Sale.

Their sole lot is Top Line (Lot 444), a colt by proven G1 sire Toreador. The latter’s numerous high class performers include champion Link Man, dual G1 winner Bull Valley, exported G1 performer Misty Birnam and current top galloper Matador Man.

Top Line, a half-brother to a winner, is out of a winning Jet Master half-sister to Politician Stakes winner Robinson Crusoe and his third dam is the G1 winning Dancing Champ mare Cool Success.

This is the same family as champion Argonaut and current high class stakes winner Sir David Baird –to name but two.

The 2018 National Sale is set to get underway at the TBA complex on April 24^th, with trading due to commence at 11:30 am.

Summerview Stud will be offering 2 lots at the 2017 National 2YO Sale which takes place a week from Thursday.

Summerview will be offering two-year-olds by such well performed South African raced stars as Curved Ball and Irish Flame.

Summerview’s two lots on offer include a colt by Dingaans winner Curved Ball (Lot 28), whose granddam is a half-sister to G1 SA Nursery hero Duc Du Orleans, and this is also the family of G1 winner Lyrical Linda, dam of Jubilee Handicap winner Liege and Summerhill Stud’s new sire Lance.

The farm’s other lot on sale is a filly by the Dynasty sired Horse Of The Year Irish Flame. This filly (Lot 354) is a half-sister to 2 winners and is from the same family as dual G1 winner Rabada and champion Jeppe’s Reef among others. (She traces back in female line to the mare Samovar –also ancestress of unbeaten champion and sire sensation Frankel).

Summerview Stud have bred amongst them, the likes of 10-time winner Carribean Bay.

Kerry and Paddy arrived at Piemonte and Summerview Stud this morning, where yearlings presented were by the likes of Duke Of Marmalade (out of a Tapit mare), Oratorio, Crusade, Mambo In Seattle, Master Of My Fate, Var, Jackson and Potala Palace amongst many others.

The inspectors commented that the national yearling crop overall was of a high class and it was very pleasing considering the drought that has swept across South Africa.
