The death of Lancaster Bomber looks to have been a big one for the South African industry. No fewer than 19 winners emerged from that son of War Front’s first crop in 2022-2023, with Lancaster Bomber’s first crop stars headed by Listed City Of Cape Town Summer Juvenile Stakes winner Rascova and brilliant Listed Irridescence Stakes heroine Beach Bomb. Other promising sorts hailing from Lancaster Bomber’s first crop include G1 Gold Medallion third place getter Guy Gibson and Red Bomber, a winner of two of his first three starts.

Summerview Stud are fortunate enough to be offering two choicely bred fillies from the last crop of this talented stallion at the 2023 August Two Year Old Sale. Miss Munroe (Lot 83) is a filly out of a mare who won five, and this filly hails from the same female line as such standout fillies as Imperious Sue, Imperious Star and Real Princess, as well as current star sprinter Gimme A Prince.

Lancaster Bomber is also the sire of the well named Battle Of Britain (Lot 105), a half-sister to three winners including the smart fillies Civil Rights and Kind Judy, with this filly out of a stakes placed three-parts sister to G1 SA Derby third Noble Secret.

Other attractive prospects in this draft include Red Sea Hills (Lot 29), a Master Of My Fate half-brother to multiple stakes winner Matador Man, Pinatubo (Lot 79), an Erupt filly whose granddam is French stakes winner Tala, and Querari filly Q For Love (Lot 278). The latter, who is from the same female line as champions Jay Peg and Kochka to name but two, is a half-sister to four winners including the stakes placed Green Lantern.

The beautifully-bred Essos out of a Danehill Dancer mare, bred by Wilgerbosdrift and Mauritzfontein, won for the second time for owner Mrs Suzette Viljoen in PE with trainer Zietsman Oosthuizen. An eye catching yearling, he has also earned five place cheques for his South African Champion Owner.

Marengo, bred and owned by Mr Justus Van Wyk and trained by Roy Magner won for the third occasion and has been paying his way with 11 place cheques to his record and proves the speed Flying The Flag can apply, winning all three races over 1000m.

Victory Twist, a big handsome dark bay trained by Tony Rivalland has given his owners immense joy, winning twice over 1700m and placing three times. He also carries an international pedigree, being out of a Cape Cross mare bred by the late Syd Rosseau of St Helier Stud.

Bush Hill Bred Guy Fox out of the wonderful mare Miss Andrea, has been unlucky – finding the 2nd placed box in his last three starts for trainer Garth Puller and will no doubt be a winner very soon.

Summerview Stud are breeders of another two second places in the past week for Flying The Flag – again another unlucky horse is Get Carter with three seconds for trainer MJ Odendaal, whilst International Racing Club’s Flag Of Wren has placed second twice – the most recent on Friday evening.

Flying The Flag is a full brother to Gr1 winning full sisters Magical and Rhododendron, both leading European multiple Gr1 winners for Coolmore.

The Summerview Stud will be offering some well related lots at this year’s November Two Year Old Sale.

The KwaZulu-Natal farm will be consigning two-year-olds sired by all of Coup De Grace, Crusade, Flying The Flag, Master Of My Fate, Rabada and the sensational Vercingetorix at November’s auction.

Writteninthesand (Lot 73) is a filly bound to have her share of admirers -not only is she by the very much in vogue Master Of My Fate, but she is also a half-sister to millionaire and Listed Christmas Handicap/Listed Secretariat Stakes winner Matador Man. This beautifully bred filly is out of smart racemare Sahara, a four time winner who was runner up in all of the G2 KZN Fillies Guineas, G3 Umzimkhulu Stakes and G3 Flamboyant Stakes.

Equus Champion and boom sire Vercingetorix is represented in Summerview’s draft by Muharib (Lot 110) -a half-brother to Listed Oaks Trial winner Aryaam who hails from the same female line as Irish Oaks winner Lailani, while short-lived Middle Park Stakes winner Crusade’s sole lot on offer is Forged Steel (Lot 51). The latter, a colt from the same family as champions Jay Peg and Kochka, is a half-brother to three winners including the stakes placed Green Lantern.

Warrior Brave (Lot 19), a colt from the first crop of dual G1 winner Rabada, is out of National Assembly’s G3 winning daughter La Pucelle, while Liberty Flag (Lot 129) is a Flying The Flag filly out of Kahal’s stakes winning daughter Cante Libre.

A half-brother to recent winner Heart Of Harlem, Grand Finale (Lot 14) is a son of dual graded stakes winner Coup De Grace from the family of world class sprinter Shea Shea, with this colt’s granddam a dual stakes winning daughter of multiple champion sire Captain Al.

Summerview mare Al Kindi produced a double at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Wednesday.

The well put together daughter of Fort Wood also gave sire Rafeef his second career winner with Maiden Juvenile Plate victress Civil Rights – and in the process also gave Sterling Miller his first double as an owner when 3yo Kind Judy (Judpot) took home Race 8.

Both fillies were purchased from the 2019 Moutonshoek Dispersal Sale for R35 000 and R15 000 respectively.

Colleen De Klerk of Summerview Stud reports that Al Kindi made the trip to Drakenstein Stud and has been covered by Lancaster Bomber, an exciting son of War Front whose first foals are on the ground this season.

Al Kindi is a half-sister to Gr1 placed Noble Secret, from the family of Honour and Glory, Piemonte’s Celestina and Australian based SAF-bred and KZN-bred mare, Noble Heir – the dam of Australian Gr3 winner, Crown Witness.

Summerview Stud have a quality draft of broodmares, including the smart dam of Gr1 placed, multiple and feature winner Matador Man – the daughter of Mogok named Sahara.

Gary and Colleen De Klerk’s Summerview Stud brought two very impressive individuals and were duly rewarded, averaging R175 000 for both of them. John Freeman signed the ticket for their quality What A Winter filly out of Over The Anvil, a half sister to 5-time winner and Black Type Green Lantern. The filly is owned by Nick Jonsson and is destined for the stables of Michael Roberts. This is the female line of Kochka, Kissable and Youcanthurrylove.

The other was an imposing colt out of Sahara by Crusade, snapped up by Dennis Drier on zoom for R160 000. Dennis is well acquainted with the family, having trained Desert Fighter amongst the family – the colt is a half-brother to feature winner Matador Man and to the smart Garth Puller trained Hawker Typhoon.

Clifton received sad news of their long time patron’s passing yesterday, Peter White was a great supporter of their Graded Stakes producing establishment.

Clifton brought another quality draft and Hollywoodbets Syndicate picked up a beautiful Var colt for R260 000 named Undercover Lover. Out of a Hussonet mare (the broodmare sire of Gr1 winner Mississippi Burning) this is a leading international female line of Miesque and sire Kingmambo can be found in the pedigree. Hollywood didn’t stop there with Clifton, and made the astute purchase of a high quality Noble Tune colt out of a Lundy’s Liability mare. Leading bloodstock agents John Freeman signed for two – by Flying The Flag and Admiral Kitten, whilst Form Bloodstock purchased an Ideal World filly.

Another very exciting moment saw Jessica Motaung of Kaizer Chiefs fame make her first purchase. Sold as agent for St Helier Stud, the dam of Lot 129 by Duke Of Marmalade has produced 7 runners and 7 winners, and is a full brother to grey Tupelo Honey.

Piemonte Stud’s highest purchase was Lot 388 Faustino, a half-brother to two 5-time winners in Filippo (Toreador), also Black Type, and Aldo (Redoute’s Promise). Manie Pillay signed for the colt, paying R220 000 for the son of Wishful Eye (Var) – who has the honour of being one of the few to ever beat the mighty Val De Ra on the track. This is the female line of Tetre Rouge.

Summerhill Equestrian sire Willow Magic continues to be popular, an Bush Hill Stud sold a colt out of a Jet Master mare for R200 000 to AG Racing. Bush Hill had an aggregate of R905 000 for the sale.

Both the aggregate and average price up on last year, the aggregate rising 22% from R32 660 00 to R39 715 000, and the average increasing 18,4 % from R103 028 to R122 957.

The median price also rose from 2019, increasing by 16,7% from R60 000 to R70 000.The increases in aggregate and average are a positive reflection on the quality of horse presented to the sale by breeders, while an active buying bench gives considerable hope for future sales in the coming seasons.

The KZN based Summerview Stud will be offering two, well-bred lots at this year’s Emperors Palace National 2YO Sale.

Both of Summerview Stud’s two-year-olds were sired by G1 sprinters, suggesting that both Forged In Ice and Desert Crusader will have speed to burn!

Forged In Ice (Lot 236) is a filly by four time G1 winning sprinter What A Winter, whose daughters also include dual G1 Bidvest Majorca Stakes winner Clouds Unfold. This filly is a half-sister to 3 winners, including the stakes placed Green Lantern, who between them have won 16 races.

Matador Man flew home under Lyle Hewitson on a very hot and humid Wednesday at Greyville to give the South African Champion Jockey and Apprentice Jockey his third win in the Christmas Handicap, now a Listed race.

The son of Toreador’s previous visit to Greyville must be scratched as he found traffic and didnt take his customary outside run, instead getting blocked on in the inside under Anton Marcus.

Out of the speedy Sahara by Mogok, who sold to Summerview Stud from Scott Bros at their Dispersal Sale for R170 000 and is now in foal to Master Of My Fate, Matador Man trained by Sean Tarry has earned over R1,3-million in stakes – a tidy return for his connections after his purchase at the 2015 National 2YO Sale for R180 000.

This is his second Stakes win – the first being the Secretariat Listed in 2016. Matador Man, voted KZN Breeders Middle Distance Champion now for two years in a row, enjoys the Greyville course when things go his way – he is a winner of the KZN Breeders Million Mile and ran third in the Gr1 Champions Cup.

He has previously achieved under Hewitson, and finished third in the Gr2 Greyville 1900 in May.

By Toreador, who stood at Bush Hill Stud prior to his passing, the connections of Matador Man have enjoyed success with the deceased son of Danehill – winning two Gr1’s with Bull Valley (by Toreador). Breeder of Matador Man, Robin Scott, retained a share and owns him along with Messrs G D Tooch, G L Blank, G J Nassif, J Nassif, Z L Nassif and J Sarkis.

Matador Man’s weanling full sister sold for R125 000 at the Scott Bros Dispersal sale, an impressive filly with plenty of strength and substance.

Matador Man would have earned his breeders a Breeder Premium claim of approximately R6 000.

KZN farm Summerview Stud will offer five yearlings at the 2018 KZN Yearling Sale, which is set to take place at the Sibaya Entertainment World on July 5^th and 6^th.

The Summerview draft includes lots by popular young sires Crusade, Gimmethegreenlight and Noble Tune –making this draft a must-see for any discerning buyer.

Shammah (Lot 123), a filly by G1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes winner Byword, is first of the Summerview draft up for sale. This filly is out of a speedy stakes placed winning daughter of top sprinter Choisir –who is already broodmare sire of G1 winners My Dream Boat, Winter and Persuasive.

Indian Ridge’s multiple G1 winning son Linngari has a smart sort to his name in the form of Apache Mountain (Lot 193). This chestnut colt is out of a winning sister to high class galloper, and Dubai winner, National Icon, and this is the same family as G1 winner Pick Six.

Unbridled’s Song’s Breeders’ Cup runner up son Noble Tune has made a pleasing start to his stud career with a number of winners to his name already. Noble Tune is the sire of Coup D’Or (Lot 232), a filly whose winning Tiger Ridge dam is a granddaughter of the very successful Madam Du Barry. The latter is ancestress of a host of top gallopers headed by G1 Summer Cup winner Liege and champion sprinter Rebel King.

Middle Park Stakes winner Crusade has made a bright start to his stud career, with stakes winners having emerged from both his first two crops to race. The son of Mr. Greeley is the sire of the cleverly named Ramsay (Lot 253), who is out of a speedy, five time winning daughter of stakes winner School For Chefs. This is the same family as once beaten, 2000 Guineas winner Brigadier Gerard.

Lil Green Gretna (Lot 259) is a daughter of red hot sire Gimmethegreenlight, sire of, among others, recent G1 Daily News 2000 winner Surcharge. A full-sister to stakes performer Green Lantern, this filly is out of a winning Fort Wood half-sister to SA Fillies Nursery winner Dash For Gretna. She is bred on the same Gimmethegreenlight/Fort Wood cross as graded stakes winners Green Pepper and Hack Green.
