Keivan Stud bred Machete Man by Act Of War won the World Sports Betting East Cape Listed for trainer Justin Snaith and owner Mr Kesavan Naidoo.

Out of Var mare Amazing Var, from the family of Tomorrow’s Miss and Naan Khaatay, the chestnut gelding sold for R200 000 off the August 2YO Sale of 2022.

The gelding ridden by Luyolo Mxothwa has won his last three starts in a row, and is a four time winner in total.

Machete Man becomes Act Of War’s fourth individual Stakes Winner, amongst War Of Athena, Battle Force and Rollwiththepunches. His wins have come over distances of 1800m -2200m.

Act Of War by Dynasty stands at Summerhill Equestrian, and is boasting a winners to runners percentage of 42.9% with two Black Type wins for the season and an impressive Average Earnings Per Runner of R65 283.

Act Of War has 11 yearlings on offer headed to the KZN Yearling Sale, including a half brother to recent Gr3 winner, Cliff Hanger.

Vanessa William’s Keivan Stud is on 35% winners to runners for the season and an AEPR of R68 000.

Summerhill Equestrian sire Act Of War enjoyed a double at Turffontein on Saturday. The other sire to feature of Summerhill Equestrian was Willow Magic.

Bartholdi, a half-brother to the smart and handsome Bohica (Capetown Noir) sold for R180 000 at the 2019 BSA Ready To Run Sale. Trained by Australian-bound Gary Alexander for syndicate Mrs J P Gardner and Messrs R G Coppin, B G Gardner and C J Millar, Gary Alexander Racing Stables CC and Summerhill Stud Syndicate (Nom: Mr M J B Goss), Bartholdi has won twice and placed from just four starts!

The three year old gelding is out of Mullins Bay mare Wysiwig, from dam of recent smart winner Aisling, and Spring Spree Listed winner Bohica. Wysiwig is from the immediate family of Gr1 2nd placed Kalami and 12-time winner Mannequin. Wysiwig has a Rabada yearling to come through.

The second winner came from a trainer who is enjoying phenomenal success with another daughter of Act Of War, War Of Athena – this time winning with Only The Brave for trainer Paul Matchett – also a graduate of the 2019 BSA Ready To Run Sale.

She sold for R150 000, and is superbly bred out of the mare Spring Garland which produced international SAF-bred winners Imbongi and Mahubo – and is the family of William Longsword, Kelly, and Victory Moon amongst others. Only The Brave has now won twice for owners
Mr R S Wentzel & Dr R E Waterman-Wentzel and placed four times – only out of the money on one occasion.

Act Of War now has a winners to runners percentage of 30%, with two Black Type wins for the current season with War Of Athena. War Of Athena is a 5-time winner, Gr1 2nd placed and the winner of a Gr2 and Gr3 and owned in the same partnership as Only The Brave.

Summerhill Equestrian report that the Gr1 winning son of Dynasty has covered almost 80 mares in the 2020 season – we look forward to more to come in the future!

Act Of War took home the KZN Breeders Award for Outstanding Stallion Prospect in 2020.

The World Sports Betting Summer Cup Day rendered exciting results for #kznbreds, and in particular the feature race as the aptly named Running Brave began her run and was leading, chased the mighty Summer Pudding to the finish, to concede to second place by two lengths but by no means ashamed in defeat.

The Brave Tin Soldier filly who was another bargain for trainer Paul Matchett who picked her up for R30 000 at the National 2YO Sale, and has won two Gr2 Kuda Gold Bracelets amongst her many wins in good company – she is another horse that has built up a superb rapport with her regular jockey, Muzi Yeni.

She accelerated to leave 5 lengths between herself and third place finishing Tree Tumbo, with #kznbred Dance Class finishing 4th for St John Gray. Dance Class is bred on the same cross that produced a Summer Cup winner for St John with the star Dancewiththedevil.

Of the top 4 to finish, 3 were fillies. Her sire Brave Tin Soldier stands at The Fort Stud, and from small numbers has produced several Gr1 results and his son Rabada stands at Spring Valley Stud.

War Of Athena, who shares a trainer with Running Brave in Paul Matchett, showed her class once more to win the Gr2 WSB Ipi Tombe Challenge from Gr1 winner, Queen Supreme. Another “cheapie” at just R30 000 off the 2019 BSA Ready To Run Sale, the daughter of Act Of War gave her young sire his first Gr2 win. She has been a star, placing a close second in the Gr1 Thekweni Stakes and winning the recent Ready To Run Cup.

Her sire Act Of War stands at Summerhill Equestrian, owned by Henning Pretorius and he is off to a promising start indeed.

Another superb effort is the smart Winter Smoke, who ‘smoked’ them once again to take the Gr3 Magnolia Handicap. Bred by Richard Fitzgerald and consigned to Nationals by Spring Valley Stud, the Ashley Fortune speedster won well under Calvin Habib. Proving that horses don’t know their price – two fillies from Scott Bros finished 3rd and 4th behind Winter Smoke – that of Double O’ Eight (Eightfold Path) and Suzette Viljoen’s Linear (Crusade).

Both of the latter were offered for sale off the Scott Bros famous Highdown Stud after either not qualifying for sales or being not sold, and were sold directly off the farm months later and have rewarded their respective owners significantly on the racetracks.

Paul Peter had a smashing day with his filly Summer Pudding, and enjoyed a 1-2 in the Gr2 WSB Dingaans, with the smart son of Willow Magic finishing 2nd just two lengths off. Ridden by Warren Kennedy, MK’s Pride owned by Koos Mkale is the mirror in looks to his Gr1 winning sire, from conformation to markings at Summerhill Equestrian.

Lee Scribante’s Piemonte Stud have welcomed an eyecatching colt out of Flashing Star, by first season sire Hat Puntano.

Born on 18 August, the colt is out of a mare by Muhtafal – his yearling half-sister sold at the National Yearling Sale for R100 000 to Corne Spies.

Flashing Star won 3 times and placed 13, including 2nd in the Lady’s  
Pendant Listed. This is also the family of Deepo and Hard To Get.

Hat Puntano, who stands at Summerhill Equestrian, won the Gr1 Gran Criterium as a two year old, and the Argentine Guineas at three, with 4 wins in total including the Gr2 Charity Mile in South Africa.

He is a sibling to two Black Types, a Gr3 winner and a Gr1 placed, and is a son of Hat Trick out of a Bernstein mare. Hat Trick is a son of Sunday Silence, in turn the sire of Japanese super sire Deep Impact who has passed on.

Piemonte finished the previous season with 31 wins and 163 places, for earnings of R2,4-million from 73 runners, and a 33% winners to runners percentage.

Piemonte Stud have the likes of Capetown Noir and Last Winter standing at stud.

Willow Magic produced his second career winner on Wednesday at Hollywoodbets Greyville. Willow Express, a grey colt out of Western Winter mare Delmonica, bred by Stonehill Stud, won third time out for trainer Sean Tarry.

He debuted at Kenilworth in the beginning of the year, and had his second start against the now Hong Kong bound War Room in the Storm Bird Listed at Turffontein.

The handsome grey colt is owned in partnership by Messrs A Lahoud, M A Currie, Craig Zoghby, Riethaan Beleggings CC (Nom:Yana Da Corte) & Sean Tarry Racing (Pty) Ltd, and gave Lyle Hewitson his first win in KZN for Champions Season, since returning from Japan.

Willow Magic has had nine places, four of them in second place, and two winners to date from 10 runners.

Willow Magic was trained by Sean Tarry, and the first Gr1 winning son of Dubawi at stud in South Africa.

Sean Tarry has another Willow Magic running in this weekends Gr1 Allan Robertson Championship for 2yo fillies – Dubawi Princess, a half-sister to several multiple winners. She is Willow Magic’s first winner, who has also placed 3 times from 5 starts.

He stands at Summerhill Equestrian in the care of Henning Pretorius for the stallions’ syndicate.
