Act Of War, Willow Magic and Flying The Flag are now well off the mark and getting their fair share of winners over the past week in particular.

Act Of War photographed recently at Summerhill Equestrian. Image: Candiese Lenferna

Act Of War, already an exciting prospect with three winners and two of his fillies already getting Black Type – a recent winner for Paul Matchett, War Of Athena ran a smart race in the beginning of July to finish third in the Gr1 Allan Robertson and will contest the Gr1 Thekweni Stakes at month end to close off a delayed Champions Season.

War Of Athena, sold as Odie Sansom at the 2019 BSA Ready To Run Sale for only R30 000, is yet another shrewd purchase by trainer Paul Matchett, who has trained the likes of Gr1 winner Brave Mary – an exported Summerhill bred and another cheap purchase for Paul.

Act Of War’s other daughter, trained by Glen Kotzen, the smart and aptly named Stella Act is also one to follow – a winner who has placed 3rd in the Devon Air Listed and 4th in the Gr3 Strelitzia at Hollywoodbets Scottsville.

Act Of War has let down into a quality sire with an outstanding temperament, a Gr1 winning son of Dynasty. His fees for 2020 are R12 000 (R3 000 Nomination + R9 000 LF) which is discounted to R10 000 if more than one mare is sent – (R2000 nomination + R8 000 LF).

Willow Magic, trained by Champion trainer Sean Tarry, has got his season off to a cracking start, currently with a 42% winners to runners percentage – with three winners from seven runners in just a matter of days!

A very handsome Willow Magic.
A Gr1 winning son of the superb sire Dubawi, Willow Magic and Act Of War are residents of Summerhill Equestrian in Mooi River, now the home of recent sales topper Celestial City for owner Henning Pretorius.

Willow Magic is also being offered at R12 000 for the season, his fee (R3000 nom + R9 000LF) will also be discounted if more than one mare is to be sent.

Bush Hill Stud’s Flying The Flag recently produced his first winner and in just a couple of days had his next winner – Marengo for owner and breeder Justus Van Wyk. It hasn’t stopped there, with Vaughan Marshall getting a second at Kenilworth today with Wilgerbosdrift & Mauritzfontein bred Fly Over, finishing second over 1400m in the colours of Ken and Jane Truter. Fly Over sold for R100 000 at the 2019 Nationals.

Flying The Flag at Bush Hill Stud in 2019. Image: Candiese Lenferna

Flying The Flag, a Group winning son of Galileo who is a full brother to the champion racemares of Coolmore and trainer Aiden O’Brien – Rhododendron (who was sent to Deep Impact to be covered before he passed away after a stellar international Gr1 career) and recent 6 time Gr1 winner, Magical, is bred in the purple from a speedy female line. The cross of Galileo onto Pivotal mares has also proved a highly successful nick internationally.

Flying The Flag puts in his imposing size, excellent bone, quality and good temperament into his babies.

Bush Hill Stud are accommodating breeders during the difficult COVID19 phase, and have halved Flying The Flag’s fee to R10 000 for the season with incentives for 20/20 matings and multiple mares. Contact Warwick Render for more information on bushhillstud@futurenet.co.za.

Bush Hill Stud enjoyed a great double at Hollywoodbets Scottsville on Wednesday, and in particular Race 4 with their retired imported stallion King’s Chapel, taking the 1st and 3rd positions.

It was also a double in the process for Bush Hill Stud breeder Allan Peters and trainer Gareth Van Zyl, as well as Warren Kennedy who is leading the Jockey championship this season.

Daidala (King’s Chapel – Koukla) won by over a length, with Hollywoodbets Sizzling Summer Challenge and KZN Breeders Series leader Bint El Malak finishing third.

Slievanorra completes the double for jockey, trainer owner and breeder! Image: Candiese Lenferna

Its the 2nd win for Daidala who has also placed twice previously. Race 5 saw Irish Flame Bush Hill-bred filly Slievanorra surge forward to win over 1950m under Warren Kennedy. Out of Bluebell Wood, the filly has been consistent and now won and placed twice from 4 starts.

Bush Hill Stud have the exciting Flying The Flag babies to debut, and his first runner Cecca finished 4th on Friday afternoon for trainer Alan Greeff under Teaque Gould over the Fairview Polytrack.

Image: Summerhill Stud

Its the 1 September and breeders will begin frantic few months ahead covering their mares from today for the 2019 foaling season.

Its a busy time of year for the farms, while foaling down mares began at the beginning of August (and depending when the mare was covered the previous year), the pressure is on to get the mares back into foal for the following year. Approximately 600 mares will foal down in KZN this season and we welcome new stallions to the KZN Breeding ranks for 2018, including twice Gr1 winning Rabada, and relocated Mambo In Seattle will be standing his first season in the province.

Other young sires whose first foals are now yearlings as of this past August, include Flying The Flag (Bush Hill Stud), Act Of War and Willow Magic (both at Summerhill Stud). Stallions expecting their first foals this season include Lance (Summerhill), Jayyed (Roy Moodley Stud Farm) and Diesel Jet (The Fort Stud), all sons of the late great Jet Master.

Stallions who have relocated within the province include Crusade and Eightfold Path from Scott Bros who are winding down their breeding operation, and Golden Sword has relocated to Yellow Star Stud. Crusade stands alongside Gr1 producer Mambo In Seattle at Peter and Jenny Blyth’s Clifton Stud, whilst Eightfold Path has moved to Bruce Le Roux’s Spring Valley Stud, to stand alongside Just As Well.

Lance

A handsome son of Jet Master and a half-brother to Gr1 Summer Cup winner, Liege and to Stakes Winner Lockheed Star. He is a 2-time winner over 1160-1400m and won the Secretariat Stakes (Listed). He descends from a family that has done exceptionally well for Summerhill – that of Uncle Tommy, Rebel King, Rebel Queen and Maine Chance resident Gr2 winning mare, King’s Temptress.

Act Of War

This Gr1 winning son of Dynasty’s first foals are yearlings. A handsome stallion with great size and quality and six Graded Stakes race wins behind his name, his dam was voted Broodmare Of The Year. Definitely a sire to watch for the future!

Rabada

Bearing a complete Summerhill pedigree from breeders who have won the National title 10 times, (9 consecutively), this very handsome son of Brave Tin Soldier is very easy on the eye. A half-brother to Black Type River Tyne (now a broodmare at Piemonte) and to the talented grey Glider Pilot, Rabada won the the Gr1 Premiers Champions Stakes and Gr1 Daily News 2000. The five-time winner stands his first season at stud and is a very exciting future prospect.

Flying The Flag

This Group winning son of Galileo sports a royal pedigree and equates to his very handsome looks. Throwing foals with plenty of substance and quality in bucketfuls, he is a full brother to three-time Gr1 winner Rhododendron and Gr2 winner Magical. Out of a Pivotal mare, its a proven Group 1 producing cross. His three parts sister to the great Gr1 winner Photo Call.

Willow Magic

This powerful Gr1 winning chestnut son of super sire Dubawi is the first of his sire to stand at stud in South Africa, and he has stamped his progeny in his powerful frame, chestnut coats and white socks. A winner of the Gr1 SA Nursery and Gr2 Dingaans and 2nd in the Gr1 Gold Medallion – if its speed you are looking for, this is your man.

Jayyed

A very handsome son of Jet Master, who ran second to Harry’s Son in the Gr1 Premiers Champion Stakes and Gr3 Graham Beck Stakes. He is beautifully bred, out of a Mr Prospector / Blushing Groom mare and won twice over 1200m.

Diesel Jet

A 5-time winning son of Jet Master standing at Jill Fox’s The Fort Stud, his first foals are due this season. He is Stakes Placed, and is a half-brother to Gr3 winner Amur Affair. This is the damline of It’s My Turn, Final Judgement and Fair Maiden.

KZN Breeding had a good days racing at Turffontein on Saturday – not only did Covered In Snow take the Bauhinia Listed, but two horses on the day by Summerhill sires secured two of the Non-Black Type features.

The Brave Tin Soldier colt Soldier On showed a smart turn of foot when coming from off the pace to win the R135 000 Egoli Mile run on the Turffontein standside on Saturday.

Marco van Rensburg had the Stuart Pettigrew trained galloper about seven lengths back after he had reared as the gates were sprung for the non black-type feature.

Turning into the home stretch, Loyal Lieutenant continued to show the way with lightly-raced recent maiden scorer Infamous Fox slipping through down the inside as Soldier On made his way down the outside.

Van Rensburg timed his move sweetly and he rode hard to stave off the determined challenge of Infamous Fox by a quarter length in a time of 100, 94 secs.

Owned and bred by Mr T Kung, Soldier On is a son of Brave Tin Soldier (Storm Cat) out of the unraced Australian-bred Rockabye Girl (Southern Image).

He is a winner of 2 races with 3 places from 6 starts for stakes of R184 550.

The Erico Verdonese trained Emerald Bay benefitted from a well-judged Craig Zackey ride to get Pick 6 punters off to a rocky start to a tough afternoon at Turffontein on Saturday.

Enjoying her handy galloping weight of 52kgs, plus a kilo over weight for Zackey’s services, Emerald Bay allowed Witchraft to do the donkey work, as she followed in stalk mode all the way round the 2400m of the R135 000 Sun Chariot Handicap.

At the 400m, Emerald Bay was given the nod and she stayed on well as Witchcraft started to labour under her weight.

Starting at 15-1, Emerald Bay was too strong and beat Summerhill-bred Gr3 winner Witchraft by 0,70 lengths in a time of 158,22 secs.

Bred by Erico Verdonese, Emerald Bay is a daughter of deceased Mullins Bay (Machiavellian) out of the three-time winner Model Emblem (National Emblem).

She has won 4 races with 7 places from 17 starts for stakes of R347 525.

Whilst foaling season is currently in full swing, the breeding sheds in the Southern Hemisphere will open tomorrow on the first day of Spring, and will see the KZN Midlands roads filled with horseboxes transporting mares to and fro for covering.

KZN have two new stallions for the upcoming season; the first is Mustajeeb at Bush Hill Stud, and the second is a well bred son of Jet Master at Roy Moodley’s stud farm, named Jayyed.

Unfortunately due to export protocols, the very exciting son of multiple British Gr1 winner Nayef – Mustajeeb – will have to miss the first month of the season through quarantine complications, however he is set to take up duties at Warwick and Karin Render’s Bush Hill Stud from the beginning of October.

The chestnut Ascot record-setting stallion has had his first foals arrive in the UK, and after news broke that Shadwell-owned Mustajeeb was to be exported to South Africa, a leading Cape nursery immediately made bookings to send mares up to KZN.

Mustajeeb is the fastest horse to come out of the world champion family of Allegretta, the sire-producing outstanding family of Galileo and Sea The Stars.

His sire Nayef is a half-brother to greats Nashwan and Unfuwain, and carries a lifetime career winners/runners strike rate of 61%. A racehorse of the highest calibre, Nayef won five Gr1’s including the Dubai Champion Stakes, Juddmonte International Stakes at York, Prince Of Wales Stakes at Ascot and the Sheema Classic in Dubai, accumulating stakes of £2,359,840.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-6507" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/18-Mustajeeb-260517-res-300x200.jpg" alt="The handsome Mustajeeb pictured in June this year. Images: Debbie Burt

Mustajeeb showed exceptional speed during a consistent racing career which saw him win from age two to four, including breaking a track record in the fastest ever time in the Gr3 Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot – Bill Oppenheim of TDN is quoted as saying when Mustajeeb retired to stud, “Sometimes it must be the toughest Gr3 [Jersey Stakes] in the world – which he duly won as 9-2 favourite. They have a genuine ‘sleeper’ in Mustajeeb!”

He ran the race faster than his own great-grandfather Indian Ridge, as well as the likes of Diktat and Gr1 Nunthorpe winner, Mozart.

Trained by Dermot Weld, who described the chestnut colt as: “Very powerful, very good looking and correct, a joy to train. A tough, geniune racehorse of the highest class,” Mustajeeb won his maiden by two and half a lengths under jockey Pat Smullen, who rode Mustajeeb in all of his efforts. His next start saw him entered for the “stallion making” Gr2 Futurity, racing green to finish second behind War Command in good going at the Curragh over 1400m.

The run brought him on and the colt found his feet; his next race in the Gr3 Amethyst Stakes in Leopardstown saw him win by two and half lengths clear, leading clear from the 150m mark and staying on strongly over the 1600m.

Mustajeeb had shown plenty of talent and his next outing was in the Gr1 Irish 2000 Guineas, where he tracked the leaders Kingman and Shifting Power to challenge and finish third in the high quality race over 1600m. He was far from disgraced with the likes of Great White Eagle, Johann Strauss and Fountain Of Youth in his wake.

Just under a month later, Dermot sent him to run in the Gr3 Jersey Stakes which would be an unforgettable experience. In good going on the turf at Ascot, he tracked the leaders and took to the front from the final furlong, sprinting the fastest time ever to be run in the quality Gr3 in breeze-splitting time of 1m 24.54s.

The runner-up Muwaary was fourth on his last start in the Poule d’Essai Des Poulains (French 2000 Guineas), whilst the third horse Giovanni Boldini had been a consistent performer and finished fourth in the Gr2 UAE Derby at Meydan.
Dermot commented after spectacular performance in June that Mustajeeb “is a very genuine colt, tough and honest, and a very progressive horse. He won his Group race against older horses at Leopardstown over a mile and he came home very well – he was the only three-year-old in the field.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-6996" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Mustajeeb-260517-177x300.jpg" alt="Mustajeeb. Image: Debbie Burt

This colt has a future. He is very adaptable and will go on any ground but he appreciates fast ground. We thought that he would win today and he did it well.”
September saw the grandson of Elusive Quality step onto the track in the Gr1 Boomerang Mile, in good to firm going. Mustajeeb finished second just a mere half a length off the winner Bow Creek after being held up at the start.

Mustajeeb defeated the multiple Gr1 winning Lord Gordon Byron again in the Gr2 Greenlands Stakes in good to yielding going, travelling up to mid division and onto fifth place two furlongs out, catching up to second with a furlong to go and powering to on to win.

One of the horses he trounced on that particular day included the mighty Sole Power – another triple Gr1 winner of the Nunthorpe Stakes, the Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan and the King’s Stands Stakes.

Mustajeeb‘s extraordinary dam line has seen every colt produced under the first four dams go on to become a Gr1 producing stallion – amongst them his close relation and dual-Gr1 winning chestnut, Tamayuz, at Derrinstown Stud (by Nayef under theMustajeeb‘s third dam), who has gone on to produce 23 Stakes performers from his first four crops and a sire of sires.

Other stallions to feature in the pedigree include Anabaa Blue and King’s Best, as well as Black Sam Bellamy – the half-brother to Sea The Stars and Galileo. This is simply a pedigree one cannot just buy into.

Mustajeeb‘s broodmare sire is Elusive Quality, a 16.2 hand son of the great Gone West that lies 10th on the broodmare sire list of leading Northern Hemisphere stallions. Elusive Quality produces 61% winners to runners and standing at Darley.

Elusive Quality has a reputation for producing fast horses including the likes of Raven’s Pass, Smarty Jones and Sepoy – with fifty Group winners and 125 Black Type winners and counting. Elusive Quality won two Gr3’s, including the Poker Handicap in a world record time of 1:31.63.

Mustajeeb will stand for a fee of R20 000 this season, contact Warwick Render for information on 082 872 7799.

Jayyed, owned in racing by Al Adiyaat South Africa (Pty) Ltd and trained by Mike De Kock, won twice and placed four times – including second on debut to the talented ML Jet, as well as second on two occasions to the brilliant Harry’s Son in the Gr1 Premier’s Champion Stakes (1600m) and Gr3 Graham Beck (1400m).

Jayyed’s last run saw him place behind the speedy Ice Machine in the Marula Sprint only a neck off in third.

Jayyed’s dam Atyab is in turn out of a Blushing Groom mare, and sees plenty of stallion power produced under her third dam which includes French-bred Japanese based Twig, 12-time winner (and 48 places including many Gr1’s!) French sire Tip Moss, and of course Gr1 placed French-bred sire in Australia, Twig Moss.

Summerhill Stud hosted a group of international press from leading Thoroughbred publications world wide, including the likes of the Racing Post, Bloodhorse and TDN amongst others last week.

The internationally renowned group of journalists from across all corners of the globe, lead by South Africa’s leading international photo journalist Liesl King, were in town for the Vodacom Durban July and were treated to an evening at Hartford House, with the stallion parade the next day.

Mick Goss of Summerhill presented four stallions for show – the handsome son of Western Winter, Capetown Noir, followed by Dubawi’s only Gr1 winning son at stud in the southern hemisphere – the glowing golden Willow Magic, followed by the elegant Gr1 winning son of Dynasty, Act Of War, and finishing with dual Gr1 producing Brave Tin Soldier, looking an absolute picture in midwinter with a bronzed fine coat.

Capetown Noir’s first crop will be yearlings this coming August, producing quality balanced youngsters that stand over ground. Act Of War and Willow Magic will have their first foals arriving this coming season, whilst Brave Tin Soldier, one of the best bred stallions in the country and a world record priced foal in his day, is the sire of juvenile Gr1 winners Rabada and Brave Mary – the latter sold last week to Team Valor.

Mick Goss took the opportunity to discuss South Africa’s stringent export controls currently in place and reinforced the importance of allowing South Africa to export our horses overseas to compete. Our South African-bred horses have proved their worth each year in strong international racing fields from America to Dubai and England and Hong Kong, achieving vast successes from limited numbers represented. With the downward economic climate currently being experienced in South Africa, opening the borders would also provide much needed job creation for South Africa.

Thank you to Summerhill for hosting an outstanding day once again at their exclusive Tijnhuis, a sumptuous lunch and a traditional Zulu dance from an award winning dance troup, along with an outstanding range of gin on offer!

World Champion sire Galileo achieved the remarkable in the Arc this year, siring the first three past the post of the great historical French race. Galileo is the sire of The Assayer (Yellow Star Stud) and Flying The Flag (Bush Hill Stud) standing in KZN.

Four-year-old filly Found, last year’s Gr1 Breeders’ Cup Turf winner, led a sensational 1-2-3 finish for trainer Aidan O’Brien when she took the €5 million Gr1 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Europe’s premier race at Chantilly.

Owned by Coolmore and partners and ridden by Ryan Moore, Found snapped a five-race string of seconds when she took over from pacesetter Vedevani and then held off stablemates Highland Reel and Order of St George to get the victory. The three top finishers were sired by Coolmore’s internationally successful stallion Galileo.

Postponed, the 2-1 favorite to stay unbeaten in five starts this year, was alongside Found in the straight but failed to kick on and finished fifth.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-large wp-image-3843" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/IMG_5168-theassayer-866x1024.jpg" alt="The Assayer at Yellow Star Stud, a son of Galileo. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Ideally positioned in midfield along the rail early, Found came out to challenge for command in the straight after unleashing a brilliant rally from more than a quarter-mile out. She easily overhauled Vedevani and stayed on strongly for her third win at the highest level.

Found covered 2,400 meters (about 1 1/2 miles) in 2:23.61 on turf rated as good, improving to 6-10-2 from 19 starts.

An unlucky ninth behind winner Golden Horn in last year’s Arc, Found was a scintillating victress two starts later in the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Keeneland, where she outbattled that rival to a half-length triumph. She could return for this year’s edition of the race Nov. 5 at Santa Anita Park.

Michael Tabor, a co-owner in the top three Arc finishers, expressed his awe to England’s Press Association.

“First, second, and third in the Arc—it’s unbelievable,” he said. “It’s just incredible. Words can’t describe it. It’s just amazing.

“This is the time of year for (Found). We knew we had a chance, but this is the Arc and it’s a tough race. It’s unreal. She’s a hardy, tough filly. I don’t have to say anything because her results speak for themselves, so it’s fantastic.”

Tabor campaigns Found and Highland Reel with Susan Magnier and Derrick Smith as part of the Coolmore partnership and the trio partners with Lloyd Williams of Australia, the majority owner in Order of St George.

Flying The Flag has his first mares confirmed in foal at Bush Hill Stud. Image: Candiese Marnewick

O’Brien said the Arc had always been a goal for Found, who won at 5-1 odds.

“We’ve had our eye on this for a long time,” O’Brien said. “When Ryan rode her as a 2-year-old and said she could win an Arc—he was obviously right.”

Found won the Gr1 Prix Marcel Boussac as a 2-year-old. She came into this year’s Arc on the back of five runner-up finishes in Gr1 races, including her finish three-quarters of length behind Almanzor in the QIPCO Irish Champion Stakes last time out Sept. 9. That race was preceded by the Darley Yorkshire Oaks, Prince of Wales’s Stakes, Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Cup, and Tattersalls Gold Cup.

“We came here very hopeful after a good run last time,” O’Brien said.

Dual Derby winner Harzand finished ninth in the Arc, and Makahiki, carrying Japan’s decades-long hope of an Arc win, came in 14th in the field of 16.

Found was bred in Ireland by Roncon, Wynatt, and Chelston, a group associated with Coolmore. Her dam is English and Irish Gr1 winner and highweight Red Evie (Intikhab), also the dam of Gr3-winning full sisters Best in the Word and Magical Dream.

“It’s the race that all of America watches and obviously Europe does, too, so the whole world is watching,” Tabor said of the Arc. “It’s a special race to say the least.”

Aiden O’Brien trains Flying The Flag’s full sister, Gr2 winner and Gr1 placed Rhododendrum. International Group winner Flying The Flag’s first mares have been confirmed in foal this season at Bush Hill Stud whilst The Assayer is covering his second year at Yellow Star Stud this season.

The grey stallion is Gr1 placed in both the Premier’s Champion Stakes and Golden Horseshoe Sprint, and bred on the same lines as the great Frankel, both being out of Danehill mares. The Assayer defeated the likes of Gold Onyx, The Mouseketeer, English Garden, Copper Parade and UAE Guineas Prep winner and Dubai Group placed Zanzamar.

Warwick and Karin Render’s Bush Hill Stud have had four winners in seven days at Greyville, the Vaal and Scottsville racecourses by resident sires King’s Chapel, Kahal (sadly deceased) and Curved Ball.

Kali’s King by King’s Chapel began the winnings streak at Greyville on the 18th, the Duncan Howell’s trained four year old colt has now won and placed three times for owner Mr J Sarkis. Out of Kali Dancer by Joshua Dancer, Kali’s King does enjoy longer and has won and placed over distances of 1900 – 2000m. Kali’s King is a half-brother to four-time winner Elegant Bay. King’s Chapel has notched up three winners in the past ten days, with 11 places.

Weiho Marwing-trained Aramouse, a full brother to Gr2 and Gr3 and nine-time winning The Mouseketeer, captured his third victory at Greyville from eight starts by a quarter of a length. The son of Kahal sold for R240 000 at the 2014 National Yearling Sale and is owned by Mr Hassan Adams and D Chinsammy. He has placed three times – including a very close second last time out by a nose from Big Si. Aramouse is out of Northern Guest mare Look Sharp – herself a winner at three, who is being covered by Flying The Flag this season. Look Sharp also produced Lt Jerry Mouse, a five-time winner including the East Cape Nursery Listed. This is the immediate dam line of The Sheik, Shoe Express and Al Nitak, as well as Top Seller.

King’s Chapel is having an impressive winning streak once more. His son Malak El Moolook has been nominated for the KZN Breeders Awards. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Light House Lady, a daughter of Curved Ball had her first win for Mr WJ Laird and trainer Lucky Houdalakis. The filly who sold for just R10 000 off the National 2YO Sale in 2015 has also placed previously from only five starts. She is out of Jua by Silvano. This was the fourth winner for young sire Curved Ball, an imposing Gr2 winning son and the only of his sire Fastnet Rock to stand in South Africa. Fastnet Rock was Champion Sire in Australia in the seasons of 2011/12 and 2014/15.

His top European performers include Fascinating Rock (Champion Stakes-Gr.1, Tattersalls Gold Cup-Gr.1), Intricately (Moyglare Stud Stakes-Gr.1), Qualify (Oaks-Gr.1), Diamondsandrubies (Pretty Polly Stakes-Gr.1), Rivet (bred by Des Scott and the winner of the Champagne Stakes-Gr.2), One Foot In Heaven (Grand Prix de Chantilly-Gr.2), Cougar Mountain (Joel Stakes-Gr.2), Turret Rocks (May Hill Stakes-Gr.2) etc. In 2015 his European yearlings have sold for €875,000, €600,000, €455,000. We will see more of the Curved Ball’s emerging as three year olds, Curved Ball stands for just R8000 this season.

After Aramouse, Bush Hill Stud had a very exciting win with a handsome son of Kahal out of Miss Andrea by Restructure at Scottsville. Trained by Duncan Howells, the good looking three year old gelding has placed twice in both his previous starts, and went on to win over 1200m under Grant Van Niekerk for owners Miss Trinisha Pillay & Messrs D C Howells, P B Hosking, P J Maujean & R R Naidoo.

An exciting racing prospect named Amazon King, he sold at the 2015 National Yearling Sale for R375 000. His dam has produced a filly by Irish Flame (Dynasty) this season – a clever mating which has seen the successful cross of Dynasty and Restructure produce the likes of Gr1 Vodacom Durban July winner, Legislate. Miss Andrea will be visiting Bush Hill’s exciting young Galileo sire this season, Flying The Flag. Miss Andrea has produced four winners to date – this is the immediate damline of Count Du Barry, Rebel King and Uncle Tommy. Kahal is currently lying third on the National Sires Log behind Silvano and Trippi, with a winners to runners percentage of 21.3% early in the new season.

Another Bush Hill resident sire, Toreador captured a winner yesterday at Scottsville as Enlightenment had her second win in a row.

KZN Breeders have announced the 2016 KZN Breeders Awards nominees, and amongst them several nominees are by our former resident sire Kahal (with six horses in total), Toreador and King’s Chapel:

We invited Gold Circle’s Racing Analyst and TV presenter Warren Lenferna to visit Scott Bros’ Highdown Stud on Friday to view the stallions, and a few of the 2015 foals including a spectacular half-brother to Wild One and a yearling full-brother to Gr1 winner Orbison.

An immaculately prepped group of yearlings pre-selected for Nationals in April from first season sires’ French Gr3 winner Eightfold Path and Gr1 Middle Park Stakes winner, Crusade were also presented.

Amongst the stallions shown was the beautifully-bred Mogok, a sire of four Gr1 winners – two of them International with Gypsy’s Warning and The Apache. Gr1 Breeders Cup and Eclipse Award winner Miesque’s Approval, a leading sire on the Polytrack made a great impression and finally the young and exciting first season sires’ Eightfold Path and Crusade.

You can catch the brilliant team of Gold Circle’s own Warren Lenferna and ex top jockey Kevin Shea co-hosting at Greyville race days including the TGIF Friday Night Live racing.

Thank you to the team at Scott Bros for an wonderful morning and beautiful KZN-bred horses!
