The overcast and wet conditions didnt deter a good turnout of buyers to the BSA Shongweni Sale, which saw a marked improvement on the sales results from last year.

Trainers and buyers came from all over the country to attend the sale, which included 35 winners and several unraced 2 and 3 year olds, mostly consigned by Scott Bros.

The top priced KZN horse at the Shongweni Sale was Monte Christo, a Trippi full brother to Dawn Calling bred by Anton Procter’s Burwell Stud.

Consigned as Lot 29, he sold for R140 000 to Rael Berelowitz. Anton has since sold their dam, Acquavella, to Drakenstein Stud – the Danehill Dancer mare is clearly a click for the Trippi mating.

Monte Christo has had three wins and placed nine times, earning R335 650 in stakes.

His full sister has to be one of the unluckiest racehorses around currently having placed second and incredible nine times – voted Gold Circle’s Best Performed 2YO of her  year, Dawn Calling has only won one race – but earned R639 700 in the process, placing second in the Gr1 Thekweni Stakes, Gr2 Golden Slipper, the KZN Breeders Million Mile, with places in the Gr3 Flamboyant and Umzimkhulu Stakes.

The most expensive KZN filly to sell was the beautiful but diminutive 2-time winner Rainbowinthesky, who sold for R80 000 to Howell Racing Stables after she was sold to dissolve a partnership.

Consigned as Lot 72, she saw very active bidding to be knocked down at R80 000. What must be one of the last of the brilliant sire Muhtafal on the track, the Spring Valley-bred neat filly has had 2 wins to date and earned almost R200 000 from 10 runs, where she has also placed five times.

Her dam, a Gr3 winner who is also Gr2 placed, is Passive Resistance, from the family of Flaming Reality, Grafton Street and Who’s My Gal.

Overall, 106 Lots were sold for an average of R32 113.21 each, with the top price of R340 000 and an aggregate of R3, 404 000 achieved – all the numbers increased very well compared to last years figures.

The Michael Holmes Bloodstock Shongweni Horses In Training Sale took place in the sweltering Durban heat at the beautiful grounds of Durban Shongweni Club, and saw a strong turnout of buyers from across the country.

The top priced KZN-bred horse and filly went to Spring Valley Stud’s Varsonic as Lot 76, a two year old filly by Var out of Sonic Enquiry by Qui Danzig and a descendant of Spring Valley’s brilliant foundation broodmare, Trade Enquiry. She sold for R120 000 to Jeff Freedman, and is a half-sister to Storm Bird Stakes Placed King’s Soldier.

The top priced KZN-bred male went to Lot 136 Silva Hawk, a Summerhill-bred son of Silvano out of Rosella by Jallad. He sold for R100 000 to Kirk Swanson. The five year old bay gelding looked a picture from the yard of Sean Tarry, and to date has had 19 runs, 3 wins and 7 places – earning close to R300 000 in stakes.

The overall top price of the sale went to Lot 54 Shimmering Brook, purchased by prominent KZN owner Alesh Naidoo for R280 000. The Silvano gelding out of Argosy mare Brilliant Brook has won twice from only four starts and earned almost R110 000.

The total proceeds for 103 Lots sold was R3,230 000, with 28 lots withdrawn and 15 not sold. The average amounted to R31 359.22.
