Noble Tune’s sire the grey Unbridled’s Song, was represented with a winner when Gr1 winner Forever Unbridled took the Breeders Cup Distaff.

Aiden O’Brien’s twice Gr1 winning fillies – Rhododendron and Seventh Heaven – will each be lining up at the Breeders Cup taking place today and tomorrow at Del Mar, part of the biggest team he has ever sent to the Breeders Cup.

The world record breaking trainer has 14 runners lined up to contest eight of the 13 Grade One races worth a total of $28 million.

Rhododendron, a full sister to Bush Hill Stud sire Flying The Flag will race in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf Gr1 for a stake of US$2000000 over 1800m. Rhododendron won the Gr1 Prix De l’Opera in her last start on Arc day at Chantilly. A hot family at the moment, both Flying The Flag and Rhododendron’s juvenile sister Magical is a Gr2 winner and ran a whisker second to Happily in the Gr1 Moyglare Stakes.

Flying The Flag’s first crop of foals are on the ground and have impressed with their size and quality.

Seventh Heaven, a Gr1 Oaks winner who accounted for the great Found in one of her Gr1 victories, competes in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Gr1 for a stake of US$4000000 over 2400m.

She is a Galileo half-sister to Crusade, whose progeny have been racking up wins nationawide over the past month. Internationally travelled Seventh Heaven ran in the Arc behind Enable, and finished fourth in the Breeders Cup last year as well as second in the Gr1 Dubai Sheema Classic to the males.

Aidan O’Brien expressed his satisfaction after seeing his Breeders’ Cup contenders take to the track at Del Mar.

Aiden O’Brien said: “They all cantered on the track and they all seem to be fine. I think we’ve got chances of sorts wherever you look.”

O’Brien has enjoyed plenty of success at the Breeders’ Cup over the years, particularly in the Turf, which he has claimed a record six times.

He is paying his first visit to Del Mar, however, and is impressed with what he has seen. He said: “The track is what’s written on the tin. It’s a lovely place to be, for both people and horses.
“We have a big team and as always we are hoping for the best.”

Crusade’s twice Gr1 winning Galileo half sister is amongst the entries for the Gr1 Arc De Triomphe, along with the likes of Enable and Cloth Of Stars.

Seventh Heaven will be looking to capture her third Gr1 victory – Crusade’s damline has strengthed over the years and their younger Galileo sibling recently placed fourth in Gr1 company, named Coat Of Arms.

Crusade produced seven winners in his first season including Black Type in Zimbabwe with Butchie Boy – his progeny seem to be enjoying a mile and we look forward to their three year old careers. Crusade in addition produced 62 places from his 39 runners for the season.

Seventh Heaven has been described as a big rangy filly by her trainer Aiden O’Brien, and her victories include the defeat of the great Found in the Gr1 Yorkshire Oaks. Aiden says of the beautifully named Seventh Heaven: “She’s tough and genuine and has a great temperament and a beautiful action. She’s a beautiful traveler and is a massive, rangy filly that handles fast ground very well.”

In November last year, she was sent to the United States for the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, starting as 7/2 second favourite and stayed on in the straight to finish fourth behind Queen’s Trust, Lady Eli and Avenge. She went on to further impress in the Gr1 Sheema Classic in Dubai, finishing second to Jack Hobbs – the great Highland Reel was in the field and finished behind them.

On her return to Europe she was dropped from Group 1 class for the first time in a year and started odds-on favourite for the Group 2 Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse in which she was ridden by Ryan Moore. Seventh Heaven took the lead approaching the final furlong, and drew right away from her rivals to win by and incredible five lengths from the French horse One Foot in Heaven.

The Gr1 Qatar Prix De L’Arc De Triomphe takes place today over 2400m for a stake of €5,000,000.

Seventh Heaven, a dual Gr1 Oaks winner added to her record by winning the Gr2 Dunaden Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket on Saturday. The filly is a Galileo half-sister to KZN sire Crusade.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained four-year-old was held-up in a share of third in the five strong field as Pinzolo made the running from Galapiat, Ryan Moore asked the Irish Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks winner to close fully three furlongs from home.

Seventh Heaven hit the front with a quarter of a mile to run and kept on strongly to make a winning seasonal reappearance in the Group Two contest.

Sky Bet make Seventh Heaven 4/1 from 6/1 for the Coronation Cup and 7/1 from 10/1 for the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien: “She’s a lovely mare, she gets a mile and a half well and she loves good ground or better and is progressing all the time.

“Obviously she was a very good mare last year and physically she’s doing very well. She ran some very good races last year.

Lot 382, the Crusade half-brother to Gr1 winner Wild One and Gr3 placed Save The Rhino.

“We came here today with one eye on the Coronation Cup. We tried to get a run in between and this race might work for her. We were delighted with her in Dubai and this race was lovely. You’d have to be very happy for her.

“She’s a big high cruise and then when you drop her down, she takes a little time to get into gear; that’s the way she is. Hopefully, she’s a mare to look forward to this year.”

Her jockey Ryan Moore said: “That was very smooth. Quick ground is very important to her. She hasn’t had her conditions since the Yorkshire Oaks and she has done remarkably well from three to four.”

In addition to her two Gr1 wins, she placed second in the Gr1 Dubai Sheema Classic and fourth in the Gr1 Breeders Cup for Fillies and Mares.

Crusade average just over R133 000 for 16 yearlings sold at Nationals – his top price R400 000 for the half-brother to Wild One and Save The Rhino.

His progeny have all placed 26 / 26 and have three early winners between them. Crusade himself is a Gr1 Middle Park Stakes winner and stands at Scott Bros.

International news related to KZN is that Arrogate, who share sire Unbridled’s Song with Noble Tune, amazed the racing world with an astounding last to first Gr1 Dubai World Cup victory, a win galloped in the same fashion as the way Gr2 & Gr3 winning Noble Tune won his races.

Securing a son of the mighty and sadly deceased Unbridled’s Song in South Africa, Noble Tune who hails from an extraordinary international family will have his first yearlings for sale this year, out of an impressive selection of hand picked mares for his book.

Unbridled’s Song is the current leading American sire and second leading international sire behind Deep Impact, having produced in addition amongst his many stakes winners the grey Liam’s Map – a dual Gr1 winner standing alongside Noble Tune’s half-brother and dual Gr1 winner Honor Code – as well as a champion broodmare sire, where he is currently 5th on America’s national log.

Juddmonte Farms’ Unbridled’s Song colt Arrogate, broke slowly out of the starting gate in the $10 million Dubai World Cup Sponsored by Emirates Airline (G1), got squeezed between two horses early, raced behind a talented field, and still got home first by 2 1/4 lengths.

In winning his third straight “world” title, Arrogate was so dominant that jockey Mike Smith said he geared the gray down at the top of the stretch to avoid taking the lead too early.

After the slow start trainer Bob Baffert said he was hoping Smith would simply take care of the superstar colt. Instead, Arrogate started picking up horses, reached contention, and swept by Gun Runner.

“I missed the break completely,” Smith said. “I said, ‘I’m just going to ride him like Zenyatta. I had no choice but to just sit there and let him collect himself.”

Baffert, who scored his third Dubai World Cup victory, said the terrible break took the wind out of his sails and caused him to question his eleventh-hour decision to bring Arrogate to Dubai after his victories in the Pegasus World Cup Invitational (G1) at Gulfstream Park and the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1) at Santa Anita Park.

“I was thinking, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t have brought him. Maybe he’s getting tired.’ … I thought, ‘If he can’t win, Mike will take care of him and not abuse him.'” But as Arrogate worked his way into contention, the Hall of Fame trainer’s mood shifted. “I thought then, ‘If he wins this race, he’s the most incredible horse I’ve ever seen,'” he said.

By that point, Smith had totally regained his confidence. “I actually kind of geared him down a little bit, because I didn’t want him to hit the lead at the quarter pole,” the jockey said. “Whatever happened, it happened for a reason. It might have been a boring race.”

The Dubai World Cup was run over a track officially labeled “muddy” after a torrential rainstorm Saturday morning capped a week of turbulent weather. Despite the off track, significant kickback, and his long trip from California, Arrogate finished the 2,000 meters—about 1 1/4 miles—in 2:02.23. Arrogate got $6 million and Neolithic, who also finished third in the Pegasus, collected $1 million.

Mubtaahij, who came in second behind California Chrome in last year’s World Cup, finished fourth while a budding Japanese star, Awardee, finished fifth.

The win boosted Arrogate’s career bankroll to $17,084,600, making him the highest-earning North American-based Thoroughbred in history. He eclipsed California Chrome among runners with one start in North America. He ranks third among all earners worldwide behind Orfevre ($19,005,275) and Gentildonna ($18,468,392).

Out of the Distorted Humor mare Bubbler, Arrogate was bred in Kentucky by Clearsky Farms and was a $560,000 Keeneland September yearling sale purchase in 2014.

Baffert and Garrett O’Rourke, racing manager for Juddmonte, said Arrogate will get a long rest now with an effort to repeat in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, which is still the long-range goal for the year. Baffert said he was glad he brought Arrogate to the desert, even beyond the prestige and purse money.

“Everybody who was here tonight is going to say, ‘I’m glad I was here to see that,'” he said. “If anybody wasn’t super impressed with that, they just don’t like horse racing. I still can’t believe he won the race.”

Seventh Heaven winning one of her two Gr1’s to date.

Crusade’s half-sister defeated the bulk of the boys in the Gr1 Dubai Sheema Classic over 2400m to finish second, after coming from the back.

Seventh Heaven, a dual Gr1 Oaks winner who placed in the Breeders Cup, added another Gr1 place to her list and ran courageously to finish behind Jack Hobbs. In the process she defeated Highland Reel and Postponed.

Crusade has a number of yearlings available at Nationals, including a sibling to Gr1 Gold Cup winner, Wild One, and to Matador Man. His imposing son Calladdi finished second yesterday at Scottsville for the second time from both his starts for Greenstreet Bloodstock.

Both Seventh Heaven and Arrogate are of particular interest to KZN Breeding, with Gr1 Middle Park Stakes winner Crusade’s half-sister by Galileo, Seventh Heaven, contesting the Gr1 Longines Dubai Sheema Classic where she will take on stable mate, Highland Reel (IRE) and look to capture her third Gr1 victory.

Rated 119, the dual Gr1 winning four year old filly will be ridden by Seamie Heffernan over the 2410m stretch. Seventh Heaven has a 6th draw.

Crusade has produced his first winner and over 12 have placed closely – look out for them in the week to come as many are due to enter the winners enclosure.

Arrogate at the track this week.

Arrogate is a mighty grey son of Unbridled’s Song, who shares a sire with Rathmor Stud’s Noble Tune. Arrogate has been drawn ninth, and all eyes will be on the imposing grey as he attempts to become one of the worlds highest earning horses after winning the Gr1 Breeders Cup Classic, the Pegasus and possibly the Dubai World Cup.

Owned by Juddmonte Farms of Frankel fame and trained by Bob Baffert, Arrogate is odds on favourite at 5/1 to take the spoils of the Dubai World Cup. From his seven starts he has won six times, placing only on debut and having three colossal Gr1 wins under his belt.

Unbridled’s Song is a major loss to the breeding world, with his sons and daughters both in demand at stud. Liam’s Map is a dual Gr1 winner standing at Lane’s End, alongside Noble Tune’s half-brother Honor Code. Both have welcomed their first foals this season. Unbridled’s Song’s daughters at stud have shattered records in the last two years, with Unrivalled Belle knocked down for $3.8million in foal to Tapit.

Noble Tune’s first yearlings go on sale this year, and the first sold for R90 000 at the Cape Yearling Sale – the average per horse sold was R58 000. Noble Tune is represented by eight yearlings at the upcoming National Yearling Sale in May including out of mares such a Victory Garden, Dynasty mare Summer To Remember and Hidden Beauty.

Under Ryan Moore, Seventh Heaven finished one and a quarter lengths in fourth place at Santa Anita over 2000m in the exclusive Gr1 Breeders Cup Filly & Mare Turf. The filly has now had four firsts, including two Gr1’s – the Irish Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks, and placed twice from nine starts. The winner of the Breeders Cup Filly & Mare Turf had previously finished third behind Seventh Heaven in her winning Yorkshire Oaks victory, where the now retired Found (winner of the Gr1 Prix De l’Arc de Triomphe) finished second.

A son of Mr Greeley standing at Scott Bros, the handsome black stallion with no white markings to be found – Crusade – covered full books each year and his first juvenile runners should hit the South African tracks very soon. A Gr1 Middle Park Stakes winner, Crusade stands for R20 000 and was the second leading freshman sire at the National Yearling Sale in April.

Flying The Flag’s full sister has been nominated amongst three of Aiden O’ Brien’s charges for the Cartier Awards. Rhododendron is up against Lady Aurelia, Brave Anna and Roly Poly.

Out of triple Gr1 winning Pivotal mare Halfway To Heaven and a three parts sister to Photo Call (sharing the speedy Cassandra Go in the female line), Rhododendron won the Gr1 Fillies Mile and Gr2 Debutante Stakes, as well as a third in the Gr1 Moyglare. She has yet to be out of the money from all five of her starts.

Flying The Flag, standing at Bush Hill Stud, has received an impressive book of mares – amongst them Look Sharp – the dam of The Mouseketeer and Aramouse, sisters to sires Biarritz and Vercingetorix, as well as Plutonium – the dam of the speedy Trippi horse Orion Quest and King Neptune.

The Flying The Flag syndicate are offering an incentive of R100 000 to the breeder that produces the first Graded Stakes winner by Flying The Flag. He stands for a fee of R20 000.

Galileo has featured prominently this year, not only with his own progeny but his brilliant son Frankel is performing brilliantly at stud as well has he did on the racetrack, with 18 individual winners, three of them Group Winners.

With South African mares Val De Ra and Chocolicious both covered by Frankel in his first season, Val De Ra’s daughter Miss Frankel has gone into training with Dennis Drier, whilst Backworth’s brilliant Gr1 Kahal mare Chocolicious, has seen her Frankel daughter come full circle after being exported from Australia back to Mike De Kock’s stable in South Africa.

She was the top selling Frankel filly in the Southern Hemisphere at the time, knocked down for $610 000 to Shadwell.

KZN stands two sons of Galileo – the handsome grey Gr1 placed horse at Yellow Star Stud was the first at stud in South Africa – The Assayer, out of a Danehill mare like Frankel, is covering his second season this year and Bush Hill Stud’s international Group winning Flying The Flag is the second son of Galileo to join the KZN sire ranks.

Another of Scott Bros’s stallions – French Gr3 winner Eightfold Path has had his half-brother by Galileo place in a Listed race last week, named Diodorus.

The dam’s of Crusade (La Traviata) Flying The Flag (Halfway To Heaven) and Eightfold Path (Divine Proportions) have all been returned to Galileo since which should see further good racing news in the future.

KZN has a lot be excited about in the future with a very exciting band of young stallions in the province.

Our KZN sires have strong connections with the Breeders Cup this year, amongst them stallions Crusade (Seventh Heaven), Noble Tune (Made You Look) and Flying The Flag (Photo Call).

Gr1 Middle Park Stakes winner Crusade’s half-sister by Galileo, Seventh Heaven – captured both the Grade 1 Darley Irish Oaks at The Curragh in Ireland and the Grade1 Darley Yorksire Oaks at York in Great Britain. She is just one in the mighty arsenal of grass fillies and mares from trainer Aidan O’Brien’s operation.

The top Irish trainer is looking for a repeat in a Breeders’ Cup turf event with this 3-year-old Galileo filly, after sending out Found — a 3-year-old at the time — to defeat a stellar field of mostly males in last year’s Turf at Keeneland. Seventh Heaven is pointing for the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Santa Anita.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-large wp-image-4099" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/IMG_0062-crusade-1024x758.jpg" alt="Gr1 Middle Park Stakes winner, Crusade. His first crop are 2yo’s. Image: Candiese Marnewick

The Yorkshire Oaks, at a mile and a half, was Seventh Heaven’s first attempt against older mares. She unleashed a furious rally late to put away her stablemate Found in the stretch to prevail by two and three-quarter lengths.

Seventh Heaven now has four wins, three of them black type, in seven outings this season.

Her only poor showing was in the Epsom Oaks, where she was beaten over 30 lengths when she didn’t like the track surface. She should benefit from a firm course at Santa Anita.

Crusade’s first crop turned two in August. The son of Mr Greeley saw his progeny enthusiastically received at sales this year, with a powerful stamp of Crusade’s colour, conformation and good looks.

Made You Look, out of a three parts sister to Noble Tune.

Rathmor Stud’s Noble Tune, who finished second in this race – the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf – will have his close relative Made You Look running on the day. Made You Look is out of Night And Day, a three parts sister to Noble Tune by Unbridled’s Song out of the great Serena’s Song, Noble Tune’s fourth dam.

Two-year-old colt Made You Look will make you look twice. Not only for his mature win in his third lifetime start in the Grade 2 With Anticipation Stakes at Saratoga, but because he looks so much like his Hall of Fame grand-dam Serena’s Song.

Serena’s Song won 18 races, including 10 grade one stakes, and was voted champion 3-year-old filly in 1995. She was voted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 2002. Serena’s Song was the all-time leading distaff earner with $3,283,388 in winnings when she was retired in late 1996.

While she was a beast on the racetrack, Serena’s Song was a delicate-looking bay filly with a small white star. Made You Look is built much the same way, and shares his grandmother’s colouring and white star.

A $360,000 yearling purchase at the 2015 Keeneland September Sale, the More Than Ready colt ran second in his debut this spring at Belmont. He won next time out going six furlongs June 18.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-large wp-image-5467" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/MG_6264-nobleThead-1024x813.jpg" alt="Noble Tune at Rathmor Stud. Image: Candiese Marnewick

His stakes debut was the With Anticipation Stakes July 31 at Saratoga, and he ran like a seasoned veteran, diving through an opening on the rail at in the stretch to take the mile test in 1:37.34. It was trainer Todd Pletcher’s fifth win in that stake in the last nine years. Pletcher also trained Made You Look’s sire More Than Ready.

“We were getting a beautiful trip; it was just a matter of whether he was able to find a spot to go through,” said Pletcher. “I thought for a young horse to shoot through there was pretty brave on his part. He’s been training really well, we were looking forward to a good effort, he got a good trip, and he delivered. He’s got a fantastic pedigree.”

Noble Tune’s first yearlings will be on sale in 2017. The Gr2 and Gr3 winning half-brother to Honor Code is truly a very lucky acquisition to South Africa and Noble Tune is the first son of Unbridled’s Song to retire to stud on the African continent. Dual Gr1 winner Honor Code stood his first season for a fee of $40 000, whilst Noble Tune stands for an accessible R25 000 and enjoyed support from stud farms nationwide.

Photo Call, a three parts sister to Flying The Flag.

Photo Call, who sold for $3million at Keeneland and is a three parts sister to Bush Hill Stud’s Flying The Flag, her recent form is picture perfect for a horse coming into the big dance. The 4-year-old daughter of Galileo (IRE) notched the first Grade 1 victory of her career when she captured the Rodeo Drive Stakes at Santa Anita in late September in her last start.

She showed her grit in the Rodeo Drive, when she had to bull her way between rivals in the stretch to win the mile and a quarter turf test.

“The stretch was a bit hairy,” said her rider Drayden Van Dyke. “Not a lot of fillies are brave enough to go through a hole like that but she just rocketed through there.”

Flying The Flag at Bush Hill Stud. Image: Candiese Marnewick

The Rodeo Drive was a “Win and You’re In” qualifier for Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf. Her race just prior, the Violet Stakes at Monmouth Park, likewise resulted in a photo op in the winner’s circle.

The Irish-bred lass has four wins in 13 starts, and the Rodeo Drive victory accounts for more than half of her $339,562 in lifetime earnings.

Her dam is a half-sister to Flying The Flag’s triple Gr1 winning dam, Halfway To Heaven, sharing the speedy third dam of Cassandra Go. Flying The Flag, an international Group winner himself has a Gr1 winning full sister in Rhododendrum.

Flying The Flag stands for R20 000 at Bush Hill Stud.

The daughter of Galileo and a half-sister to Gr1 Middle Park Stakes winner Crusade, landed the Irish Oaks on her last start and added another Group One to her haul, producing a powerful surge to overhaul Queen’s Trust at the furlong pole and stretch clear for a commanding two-and-three-quarter lengths victory.

Stablemate Found (2/1 favourite), who was expected to need the run on her return from an absence, travelled well for a long way and came through for second, ahead of Queen’s Trust who confirmed her runner-up spot behind Minding in the Nassau was no fluke.

Sky Bet make the winner 5/1 from 12/1 for the QIPCO Filly & Mares Stakes on Champions Day at Ascot and 16/1 for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp

Winning jockey Colm O’Donoghue said: “These are Ryan’s (Moore) rides, hopefully we’re looking after them for him and he’s getting back soon. She’s a very good filly. She was obviously a Classic winner coming here and was getting the weight allowance from some older fillies, so we made use of it.

“She’s tough and genuine and has a great temperament and a beautiful action. This is what we all work every year for. It’s nice to get the opportunity and to take it.”

O’Brien was thrilled with the performances of both the winner and the second.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="wp-image-4099 size-large" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/01/IMG_0062-crusade-1024x758.jpg" alt="Gr1 Middle Park Stakes winner, Crusade.
He said: “We were delighted with Seventh Heaven at home and Colm gave her a beautiful ride. She came forward lovely from the Curragh and we thought the track and ground and trip would suit her well. The lads will decide what they want to do, but she’s a lot of options. She’s a beautiful traveller and is a massive, rangy filly that handles fast ground very well.

“She has plenty of class and has the option of all those fillies races and there’s the option of the Filly & Mare Turf in America (Breeders’ Cup)) at the end of the year. I’d say she’s going to make a real four-year-old, because she’s big and rangy.”

Crusade’s yearlings have been welcomed at the sales in 2016 and he impressed with the stamp of his individuals which reflected in their impressive sales averages. Crusade stands at Scott Bros for a fee of R20 000 and covered full books in his first three seasons.

Five two year olds are available at the National 2YO Sale taking place 18 and 19 August, consigned below.
