A daughter of Crusade bred and owned by the Missing U Syndicate of National Park fame (represented by Rob Knuppe), the diminutive black filly flew home to register her 2nd career win from two race starts – 3 if you include her Barrier Trial.

Gavin Van Zyl’s face post race said it all – she isn’t the biggest filly about but she is the carbon copy of her late sire Crusade (winner of the Gr1 Middle Parks Stakes), and with the size of her heart, she looks to possibly be a feature prospect for Champions Season in 2020.

The current leading jockey on the national log, Warren Kennedy has ridden her in all three of her starts and she won by a length from Queen Of Alamo on Sunday at Hollywoodbets Scottsville. Queen Of Alamo, to put it into perspective is no slouch herself – a Merit Rated 90 4-time winner with 10 places behind her name and has placed behind Graded Stakes winner Neptune’s Rain in the past.

Her sire, the Late Crusade who stood at Clifton Stud after relocating from Scott Bros, has had 25 wins this season and was crowned KZN Breeders Stallion Of The Year on Saturday evening – with 4 Stakes Winners from his first crop, he finished on 44% winners to runners last season with over R5,5-million in stakes earned. His twice Listed winning daughter bred by Clifton Stud, Covered In Snow, has returned to her birth place to begin her stud career.

Whizz Of Odds is out of mare Against The Odds by Kings Apostle, in turn out of a Badgers Drift mare. This is the female line of Amberpondo and Engagement (who beat the likes of Igugu and The Apache, and is at stud at Hadlow for St John Gray’s Graystone Stud), as well as the likes of Monet and Ethereal Lady.

Gavin Van Zyl also purchased her Global View half-brother for R100 000 off the 2019 National 2YO Sale.

Capetown Noir is off to a flying start at stud and he had a double on Sunday at Hollywoodbets Scottsville.

The handsome multiple Gr1 winner, trained by Dean Kannemeyer, throws a very specific type of Thoroughbred that is easy to pick in the parade ring, and he throws them oozing quality and good looks. These were his 4th winners for the early season and 10 places to date from limited numbers to race.

In his first season he had 28 runners, with 8 wins and 48 places – that included the very smart and talented Piemonte Stud bred Brandina – twice Stakes Placed, at both Fairview and Kenilworth.

Straight Up, owned by Jimmy Sarkis and bred by Summerhill Stud won third time out for trainer Duncan Howells, after placing previously and relished the 1600m distance.

Soiree, a half-sister to a winner last week (Mystic Dreamer) who set a new track record (both bred by Clifton Stud) was equally impressive, the 3yo coming out to win on race debut for trainer Corinne Bestel and jockey Gareth Wright.

Capetown Noir is represented by 9 horses at the upcoming Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale on 3 November at the TBA Complex.

Scott Bros evergreen Mogok, a sire with consistently good stats in each and every season had a double at Scottsville yesterday, including an impressive debut win with Wave.

Mogok’s progeny have earned over R1,5-million this season – an immaculately-bred sire, by Storm Cat from the immediate female line of Northern Dancer and a half-brother to Machiavellian, Mogok has the rare distinction of producing two Gr1 horses overseas – Gypsy’s Warning and his son at stud, The Apache.

In total, he has produced 4 Gr1 winners, and the sire of 40 Stakes horses (wins and places).

Wave, trained by Gavin Van Zyl who trained The Apache to Gr1 victory, is owned in partnership by Lucky Vest 12 CC (Nom: Mr S Govender),Team G Racing (Nom: Mr G H van Zyl), Messrs E A Budlender, P R Rencken & Mrs C C Naidoo. He sold for R100 000 off the 2018 KZN Yearling Sale and earned his connections a BSA bonus of R50 000 for qualifying yearlings sold at BSA sales.

Wave, racing green finished almost three lengths with relative ease and is definitely a horse to watch in the future. He is out of a Miesque’s Approval mare Seaview, this is the family of La Fabulous, Rip Curl and Surf The Net.

Mark Dixon, who very sadly lost his special horse London Call unexpectedly recently,  followed in the third race with Sand Queen (also bred by Scotts), winning her third race after placing in both of her previous race starts for owners Messrs Andre Fouche, G A Hauptfleisch & Mrs H Kuhn.

Sand Queen sold for just R30 000 off the 2018 Shongweni Mixed Sale, out of a half-sister to Jungle Sands and Pure Shore. Her dam has produced six winners to date including the recent Sand Path.

Sean Tarry’s hardknocking Kahal mare Witchcraft enjoyed the very rare distinction of achieving the KZN Oaks double when she dictated matters under an enterprising ride by Lyle Hewitson to win the Scottsville R300 000 Gr3 Track & Ball Oaks on Saturday.

The race was given open status in 2014 for strategic reasons and the bumper field that lined up on Saturday suggests that the move has been the right one in the broader scheme of things.

But the Avontuur-sponsored Lyle Hewitson had other ideas and he dictated the race perfectly to have enough in reserve when it counted.

In much the same fashion as she had scored in the same race in 2016 at 25-1, the 16-1 Witchcraft galloped all the way to the line to hold Meryl to 3,75 lengths in a time of 147,10 secs.

A R400 000 Johannesburg Ready To Run Sale graduate, Witchcraft has now won 6 races with 8 places from 23 starts and took her earnings to R838 925.

Bred by Summerhill she is by the ill-fated Kahal out of the Irish mare Deceptive Charm by Kingmambo, who is in turn out of a Sadler’s Wells / Mill Reef mare, String Quartet.

This is a female line that has proved itself successful at the highest level in South African racing, including the likes of Gr1 Gold Bowl winner Mosszao, as well as Autumn Lodge.

The damline also includes four sires – Gr1 winners Le Moss and Levmoss, as well as Alleging and Visions Of Grandeur being found under the second dam.

Summerhill have had a smashing season indeed, including two Gr1’s this season!

Speedy Val-La-Ree made all sit up and take notice at Scottsville yesterday, when the Hadlow-born Var filly and a grand-daughter of the great Dog Rose galloped to a four-length victory for trainer Doug Campbell and owners Sir George Albu, Messrs L S Naidoo and P D Robinson.

Sold for R150 000 off the 2017 KZN Yearling Sale, the beautiful daughter of Irish-bred Colchium is a first foal that was bred in partnership between Hallmark Thoroughbreds and Hadlow Stud.

Hallmark Thoroughbreds have had their name in lights owing to their brilliant broodmare First Arrival – the dam of of the likes of Light The Lights, In The Fast Lane, Pack Leader and Let’s Rock ‘n Roll, to name but a few.

Trainer Doug Campbell has recounted previously how her connections never placed a bet on Val-La-Ree in her first run, after her gallop at Scottsville saw the filly flitting all over the track and her antics didnt infuse much confidence for her first race – however she blew them away by winning on debut by four lengths! She has been ridden on both occasions by up and coming apprentice Dennis Schwarz, now based in Johannesburg.

Colchium is now owned by Cathy and Jonathan Martin of Hadlow Stud, and she currently has an outstanding Potala Palace foal at foot and in foal to Bush Hill Stud’s Flying The Flag.

It is an interesting pedigree – Colchium by Elnadim (Danzig), is the dam of Black-Type Smart Colleen who placed in the Stormsvlei Listed, and is herself a daughter of Dog Rose by Fort Wood. Colchium has also produced 6-time winner in Hong Kong, Flying Comfort (Travel Comfort), as well as two other winners.

Mauritzfontein-bred Dog Rose also produced Gr3 winner Saluki (GB) by Dubai Destination. The third dam is Lady Shirley Bird – this female line has produced Kestrel, Banbury, Colonial Girl and Pure Platinum.

The brilliant London Call won the Marula Sprint (Non Black Type) for the second year running yesterday, leaving the field of four (Doing It For Dan declared a non runner on the day) behind by one and a half lengths for trainer Mark Dixon.

The beautifully-bred son of Kahal out of the super Spring Valley broodmare Fancy Fantasy, took home his 11th career win and shouldered a top weight of 61.5kgs and continued to power away from the field with every stride – the second placed Shwanky carrying 50kgs.

London Call is Merit Rated at a very respectable MR 111, and its a shame that luck has not been on his side to secure a much deserved Graded Stakes win – he has defeated amongst many Gr1 winners Seventh Plain, Talktothestars, Sergeant Hardy and Kochka amongst others. Its no secret that London Call has had his fair share of issues but his conditioner needs to be applauded for the way he has handled the son of Kahal’s sterling racing career – with 11 wins from 19 runs and five places.

Seven year old London Call sold for R120 000 at the 2012 National Yearling Sale and has earned his owners Messrs C N Larsson, G N Cumming & R D Samuelson an amount of  R873,725 in stakes.

The same owner / breeder / trainer combination own Fantasy Lady – a three parts sister to London Call out of Silvano mare Silver Fantasy – herself a half-sister to London Call. Fantasy Lady finished two lengths off Wild Wicket in the Michael Roberts Handicap Listed, the consistent filly has won four times and placed in seven races.

Fancy Fantasy, one of Bruce’s foundation mares at Spring Valley Stud who passed on a few years ago, has been an outstanding broodmare and produced 10 winners from 11 foals – including Gr1 winner and Black Types’ Indiscreet Fantasy, Personal Fantacy, Malinga and Silver Fantasy amongst others.

A daughter of Rainbow Dream from the damline of Don The Stripe, Fancy Fantasy was a winner at three and placed only three times.

She has three daughters at stud that include Vasilisa, Silver Fantasy and Dreams And Fancies – and all three have produced winners with 12 victories between them.

Bruce Le Roux of Spring Valley Stud produced a phenomenal winners to runners percentage last season of 49.1% which earned him KZN Breeders Achievement Award in December last year, from 55 runners.

Keep a look out for Bruce Le Roux’s draft from the Spring Valley Stud at the upcoming National Yearling Sale in April.

In yet another double for Scott Bros sire Crusade, juvenile Lady Abigail won the Maiden Juvenile Plate whilst Greenstreet Bloodstock’s imposing three year old Calladdi impressed to win his first race from four starts.

Crusade has produced 28 winners to date, including recent Listed winner Covered In Snow and Black Type last season in Zimbabwe with Butchie Boy.

Lady Abigail was the only filly to contest race number one of the day, and made it a 1-2 for KZN-breds and trainer Lezeanne Forbes. The filly, bred by Bruce Le Roux’s Spring Valley Stud out of Lady Gray, has had three runs to win and place from all of them and earn her connections R87 500 in stakes (excluding the additional BSA Maiden Juvenile Bonus of R40 000 she took home).

Lady Abigail has repaid her connections her purchase price of R50 000 from the 2017 National Yearling Sale. The horse to finish second was Anza-Borrego, a Backworth-bred son of Bezrin who has placed from all three of his starts and is definitely going to find the winners enclosure very soon.

The next to follow up was a special win for Justin Vermaak of Greenstreet Bloodstock. Whilst Justin was away for the CTS Cape Premier Yearling Sale, his parents and new part owners of Calladdi were on course to lead in their first winner, in partnership with Greenstreet Bloodstock and Leslie Logan. Calladdi, a strapping son of Crusade out of Black Type mare Carina Coleman by The Sheik, is bred by the Late Greg Royden-Turner of Roski Stud.

Calladdi sold for R160 000 off the 2016 National Yearling Sale and has won and placed (second) twice from four starts.

Crusade, a half-brother to twice Gr1 winning Seventh Heaven and a Gr1 winner himself, will be represented by yearlings at the National Yearling Sale which are siblings to Subtropical and Matador Man, a first foal out of a full sister to The Apache, and half-sisters to Angel’s Power and African Dream respectively.

Crusade clearly stamps his stock and his 3yo son Slightly Scottish is an entrant for the Michael Roberts Listed.

He stands at Scott Bros Highdown Stud for a fee of R20 000.

The entries for the Michael Roberts Handicap (Listed) are in and include seven KZN-breds including Crusade entry, Slightly Scottish from the yard of Dean Kannemeyer.

Doug Campbell has entered two of his ‘stalwarts’ – chestnut mare Lala and Kingston Boy – the latter a son of Mogok, who is just under R30 000 short of earnings of R1-million in stakes with 8 wins and 21 places from 54 starts.

Amongst Mark Dixon’s entries are Fantasy Lady – very closely related to the brilliant London Call and owned by the same syndicate consisting of Messrs G N Cumming, C N Larsson & R D Samuelson. Bred by Bruce Le Roux of Spring Valley Stud, she is a four time winning daughter of Kahal who has placed seven times from 15 starts.

A mare that enjoys Scottsville and won over this course and distance last time out for owner Rodney Calder and trainer Craig Eudey, Mark My Card, a half-sister to Markofdistinction and closely related to the brilliant Toccata, will also throw her hat into the ring. The daughter of Miesque’s Approval has won six and earned over R500 000 in stakes – not to shabby for a mare that was sold directly off Highdown Stud as an unraced three year old and won on debut!

The beautifully-named Slightly Scottish, a three year old son of Crusade bred and owned in partnership by the Scottish Stewart MacGregor and Ronnie Rowley, has been the picture of consistence, winning and placing from all five starts. The Crusades enjoy a mile on turf, and this should suit Slightly Scottish who has won over the distance.

21 Length marathon winner Run Rhino Run has once again changed trainers, and this time Frank Robinson has dropped the difficult but talented Silvano gelding to 1750m.

Kjell Foundation’s handsome big chestnut son of Kahal, the aptly named Wynkelder, won the KZN Summer Challenge Final (Non Black Type) at Scottsville yesterday for trainer and part owner Tony Rivalland and owners  Messrs G N Cumming, Clint Larsson, Arthur Potts and Mrs Mary Liley.

Wynkelder, out of Al Vino [read more about her here] by Al Mufti ran away to a strong one and half length victory, on the same weekend his deceased sire Kahal was crowned KZN Breeders Stallion Of The Year once again.

The lightly raced Wynkelder has now won three of his eight starts and placed three times.

Merit Rated at 86, he has won R269 600 in stakes – a good return on his purchase price of R100 000 at the National Yearling Sale. He is a full brother to 4-time winner Kanonkop.

Keep a look out for their Mogok half-sister, Marsanne, who is in training with Duncan Howells.

In other Scottsville news, the first Maiden Juvenile Plate took place at Scottsville yesterday in an 800m dash.

The finish saw juveniles by Crusade and the first by Noble Tune finish 2nd and 3rd, hot on the heels of the winner less than half a length off. Exciting times ahead indeed!

Coenie De Beer, the owner and trainer of Gr1 Tsogo Sun Sprint winner and Equus Award Champion Sprinter Talktothestars, brought the leading sprinter to Scottsville yesterday along with his full sister by Overlord, Lady Starlett, the latter giving a galloping lesson to win strongly going away.

Talktothestars under Ashton Arries was entered alongside Brutal Force for the day’s Pinnacle Stakes – a race which turned into what was almost a triple dead heat between the three horses evenly spaced along the rails and centre. Talktothestars finished third after finding a comeback to take on a fast finishing Brutal Force – both of the strapping geldings carrying 61.5kgs were beaten by Var filly Sommerlied, carrying 56kgs.

Looking like a less imposing image of her full brother, the Scott Bros-bred Lady Starlett had Anton Marcus in the irons and it was doubtful if she would see out the 1200m – after being very successfull over 1000m, on form the 1200m was questionable.

She silenced her critics by absolutely anihilating the opposition and flying to the finish to win by almost two lengths – securing her fifth career victory and an elated Anton Marcus.  In addition to her wins, Lady Starlett has placed seven times.

Being a full sister to a Gr1 Equus Champion and a multiple winner at stud, there is no doubt that Lady Starlett has secured her future to make her contribution towards the South African stud book.

Garth Puller has an outstanding Mogok colt half-brother to the above duo in training, whilst their Eightfold Path yearling sibling colt sold at Nationals earlier this year.

Look out for the Scott Bros National 2YO Sale draft at the upcoming sale – their past graduates have included the likes of Talktothestars (who never got a bid), The Apache (sold for R80 000), and Listed and Gr1 placed Matador Man, who sold for R180 000.
