Veteran trainer Ormond Ferraris won the inaugural KZN Breeders Million Mile in 2012 with the Ivanhoe bred Knock On Wood, which raced in the colours of his son David.

On Saturday the senior statesman of the SA training ranks took the honours in the restricted feature again. This time with the Rathmor Stud-bred Romany Prince, who got the better of a thrilling Kahal exacta duel with 7yo sprinter, London Call.

The feature, the only event on the nine-race KZN Breeders Day run on the turf, produced a grandstand finish with the 5yo Gauteng raider getting the better of Mark Dixon’s top-class 7yo sprinter, who refused to go down without a fight.

The win by Romany Prince was a pleasing KZN Yearling Sale boost for Rathmor Stud, who offer Gypsy Rose (# 184) from the same family.

She is a Noble Tune daughter and half-sister to six winners, most notably to dual SA & US Gr1 winner Gypsy’s Warning.

The well endowed feature headlined the KZN Breeders annual raceday and is restricted to KZN bred 3yo’s and older registered as KwaZulu-Natal bred in terms of the Gold Circle Racing and Gaming Group Thoroughbred Breeder, Stallion and Owner Premium scheme.

The withdrawal of last year’s winner, and Vodacom Durban July hopeful, Matador Man on Thursday threw the race open. But the favourite obliged in the end.

Warren Kennedy rode a perfectly judged race after a slow start, when he got Romany Prince into a favourable position as London Call led Matador Man’s half-brother Subtropical and Unagi into the home straight.

With London Call seemingly headed for glory, Kennedy produced Romany Prince through a tight gap and the 5yo looked to sail on by. But Brandon Lerena and the hardknocking London Call had other ideas and they fought back with vigour.

<img decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-8331" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/CAN_9760-warren.jpg" alt="Warren Kennedy is all smiles as he wins the Million Mile for a second time, both on sons of Kahal. Image: Candiese Marnewick

At the line, Romany Prince held a head advantage to bank the R625 000 cheque for staunch owner Peter Dimakogiannis. He won in a time of 97 secs flat.

London Call was gallant in defeat, with Gary Alexander’s raider Unagi paying the travelling costs with a handsome R100 000 bank in third.

Subtropical stayed on for fourth, with 2017 runner-up Dawn Calling taking the final stakes slice of R25 000 for fifth.

In addition to the winning stake, the first placed connections won a voucher to the value of R20 000 towards the purchase of a KZN-bred yearling at the KZN Yearling Sale, with the second, third and fourth placed connections each getting a voucher of R10 000 towards the same. The KZN Yearling Sale takes place 5 & 6 July at Sibaya.

Trainer Frank Robinson saddled the winner for Ormond Ferraris.

“Romany Prince arrived here on Friday. He looked magnificent. Even at his age, Ormond Ferraris is still the king,” said Robinson.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-8332" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/CAN_9921-mike.jpg" alt="Mike McHardy, breeder of Romany Prince, accepts the winning trophy from KZN Breeders Chairman Bruce Le Roux.
The 2017 Gr3 London News Stakes winner, Romany Prince was bred by Rathmor Stud and is a half brother a to dual Gr1 winner Gypsy’s Warning (Mogok).

He was Ormond Ferraris’ 2500th career winner in 2016 when he won the Listed Drum Star.

A R450 000 National Yearling Sale graduate, the dark bay gelding has earned R1 381 525 with 7 wins and 10 places from 34 starts.

A son of the deceased Kahal (Machiavellian), he is out of former KZN Breeders Broodmare Of The Year Gypsy Queen (Royal Chalice), a full sister to SA Oaks winners Royal Prophecy and Noble Destiny.

Gypsy Queen, unplaced in a single start at 3, never reached the racing stardom her sisters did on the track, but has left them behind in the breeding shed. She has begun her own dynasty, with her daughters at leading stud farms countrywide and Champion breeders Varsfontein Stud stand two of her daughters – one by Jalld, the other by Fort Wood.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-8333" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/CAN_9941-mike.jpg" alt="The winning team, with Frank Robinson representing Ormond Ferraris.
They are already performing at stud globally – American and USA Gr1 winner Gypsy’s Warning, bred by Rathmor, has produced 2 foals and 2 winners – the second winning on debut very recently. The first – a Street Cry filly named Know raced in Ireland, won twice and sold to Japan as a broodmare prospect.

Gr2 Surabi by Wolfhound is off to an incredible start, producing Sundari and Gr3 placed, So Var.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-4372" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/GypsyqueenKahal2012-300x278.jpg" alt="Gypsy Queen with Romany Prince as a foal at foot.
Their half-sister by Jallad, Queen Of All, is the dam of Stakes Winner Queen Forever who is also multiple Listed Placed. Klawervlei have one of her last daughters produced at stud – the Silvano mare Judi Silvano is due to foal to Coup De Grace this year. Rathmor retained a Fort Wood daughter, Golden Earings, who foaled to Noble Tune in 2017.

Thank you to the owners and trainers who supported the KZN Breeders Race Day, as well as to our eight sponsors including the farm of the winners, Noble Tune.

It was a cross section of winning trainers on the day, with Sean Tarry taking three races, Glen Kotzen one with Trippi’s Girl, and Ormond Ferraris taking the main.

The local trainers to win were Garth Puller with his very smart Roman Dancer (by Crusade), Mark Dixon with his superb mare Isingamoya, Unbelievable Lad who gave his second win on the trot for Ivan and Darryl Moore, and Frank Robinson winning from start to finish with the aptly named Bank The Cash in the 1900.

Congratulations to Mike and Tanya McHardy of Rathmor Stud on a most deserving win in the Million Mile!

Image: Candiese Marnewick

*Article first published in International Racehorse Magazine, October 2017. Gypsy Queen had yet another grandson win at Kenilworth last week by Var for Glen Kotzen.

There is never an exact science when it comes to breeding Thoroughbreds and if it were that easy, it wouldnt be the exciting game that it is – horse breeders are the most positive people in the world, believing every foal born is going to be a future champion year in and year out.

Whilst breeders can pace the sales yards at Broodmare sales, studying catalogues, how much Black Type a mare has and conformation along with progeny produced, you can never be guaranteed what she will go on to do.

Whilst mares who have earned Black Type themselves at the track usually buy tickets to stud for their lesser performed siblings, its never a guarantee that a Black Type mare at stud will perform to the heights expected.

Gypsy Queen is the sort of mare that keeps all breeders hopes alive at sales – unplaced in one start at age 3, but a full sister to two Gr2 SA Oaks winners amongst their other Stakes wins – namely Royal Prophecy and Noble Destiny.
Gypsy Queen has no doubt trounced her Bold Black Type sisters at stud, whose progeny have won but not excelled to the the heights of Gypsy Queen.

There is also a saying that one man’s loss can be another man’s gain, and in the case of Gypsy Queen (who has a name sake racing currently by Gitano Hernando) it was Mike McHardy of Rathmor Stud who purchased the mare in 2003 at the Burwell Stud Dispersal Sale, for R55 000.

Mike McHardy of Rathmor Stud describes his thoughts of Gypsy Queen at the sale: ” As a individual she was not much to look at. She just had the breeding lines that appealed to me and I suppose I went with my gut feel and got very lucky with her.”

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-7346" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/009.jpg" alt="Gypsy's Warning (SAF) with Joel Rosario up wins the Matriarch Stakes GI at Hollywood Park, Inglewood Calif.
Gypsy Queen’s purchase price pales into comparison with the amount of coverage the placid bright bay mare would bring to Rathmor Stud, placing them firmly on the Thoroughbred breeding map and establishing a dynasty in her own right, both locally and internationally.

Mike describes her purchase as “a huge help to us – she took over from the great mare Grecian Gale [who produced Gr1 winner Wendywood] that passed away and probably saved us from falling into a hole.

At the time we only bred 8 to 15 mares a year, so you can imagine how difficult it is to be lucky enough to get a mare like this. It gave us international exposure which on a small farm like ours, its a once in a lifetime coup.”

Sadly the 23 year old outstanding broodmare with a big honest eye and a thick bushy forelock passed away at her home of 14 years in Nottingham Road, Rathmor Stud, during the month of August this year.

Voted KZN Breeders Broodmare Of The Year in 2011, Gypsy Queen has fast established herself in the studbook, with six daughters and a grand-daughter acquired by leading Thoroughbred nurseries in both South Africa and overseas – going on to produce six winning progeny between them, including in Ireland and a Listed winning juvenile grand-daughter at Fairview – Queen Forever. Her grandson So Var is Gr3 placed and a 3-time winner at Turffontein.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-6520" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/IMG_0576-queenforever-223x300.jpg" alt="Queen Forever pictured in the sales ring at Val De Vie. She was voted Eastern Cape Champion Juvenile Filly this year. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Her last foal produced (now a yearling filly) is a slightly sentimental one and a combination of the best to the best – Rathmor Stud stand one of the most exciting stallion prospects to come to South Africa in Noble Tune, the half-brother to dual Gr1 winner Honor Code and the family of Serena’s Song and Made You Look, to name but a few of the greats from the internationally sought after pedigree.

Asked if the filly would be sent to yearling sales, Mike confirmed that they would sell her. “We have two daughters already in Golden earings, the Fort Wood, and then 50% of Judy Silvano (by SA Champion sire Silvano) with Klawervlei Stud in partnership.

She will be visiting Coup De Grace this season which is an exceptional mating, he is the first son of Tapit to retire to stud in South Africa.”

Gypsy Queen’s first daughter to go to stud was Among Royalty, who produced three winners for breeders Collingwood Stud.

Leading breeding establishment Varsfontein, who amassed the most individual stakes winners which is unmatched by any other stud over the past South African racing season and saw them voted Equus Outstanding Breeder, have two of Gypsy Queen’s daughters at stud (both bred by Rathmor) – the unraced Jallad mare Queen Of All and Gypsy Madonna.

Golden Earings full sister, Gypsy Madonna, has foaled to Judpot (2015) and Gimmethegreenlight (2016). Sold for R1,2million as a yearling, Gypsy Madonna won twice and placed fourth in a Listed race.

Queen Of All gave Gypsy Queen her first Black Type as a grand dam, with the Scribante-owned juvenile filly by Gimmethegreenlight winning the Lady’s Slipper Stakes (Listed) at Fairview. Queen Forever has gone to be crowned the Eastern Cape’s Champion Juvenile filly of last season.

Queen Forever has now recorded two wins from three starts for trainer Alan Greef – a R130 000 purchase off the 2015 Val De Vie Yearling Sale, she has bought her ticket to join Piemonte Stud in Summerveld as a broodmare in the future.

Another Rathmor-bred daughter Surabi (by Wolfhound) won the Gr2 Camellia Stakes and the Listed Gardenia, and placed in several Graded Stakes races.

A resident of Maine Chance Farms who stand Silvano, she has produced 4-time winner Sundari (including the Non-Black Type RA Flamingo Mile) and So Var – the latter trained by Gavin Van Zyl for owner Michael Leaf.

It is the third win for So Var, who has in addition placed from all of seven of his starts, including a second to the talented Al Mariachi in the Gr3 Umkhomazi Stakes at Greyville.

“You cannot keep a family hot without other big studs helping you, and with the major studs having her daughters, it helps to spread your chances,” Mike goes on to say. “They go to good sires and get every opportunity with the best. With regards to overseas, its fantastic as I feel that when South Africa open up to export our Thoroughbreds, our family will be well known internationally and it will give us a head start.”

The filly that put Gypsy Queen and Rathmor Stud on the map is Gypsy’s Warning, who after a glittering South African and American Gr1 winning career was sold at the Keeneland November sale for a whopping $1.05 million, offered at the time as a racing/broodmare prospect.

Sold by Denali Stud on behalf of Team Valor and Green Lantern Stable to dissolve the partnership, she was purchased by Flaxman Holdings who bred her sire, Mogok.

Mike describes his reaction when he heard that Gypsy’s Warning had sold for over R10-million from Keeneland, he said it was absolute jubilation and pride.

“The fact that something from our small farm could sell for for that sort of money, and after that you realise that South Africa-breds are comparible to a degree in the international market, as she was taken to be a broodmare – which makes us realise that we do have the pedigrees here, to compete and sell internationally, which is all very exciting.”

Described as a temperamental filly from birth, quite the opposite of her mother, Gypsy’s Warning originally sold for R170 000 at 2007 National Yearling Sale to the Duncan Howells Racing Stable.

Gypsy’s Warning got off to an exceptional start with Duncan Howells, recently awarded Kwa-Zulu Natal’s leading trainer for the season and a man who has trained many Group Winners, including the likes of the brilliant Gr1 exported fillies Via Africa and Same Jurisdiction.

Duncan describes Gypsy’s Warning as one of the best fillies he has ever trained, going on to say that “she showed us very little in training at home, but was super star at the racecourse. Her win first time out was unexpected and she just got better and better with racing.”

Gypsy’s Warning won five races including three Gr1’s in South Africa with Howells, and two wins in America with trainer Graham Motion including the Gr1 Matriarch Stakes and the Gr3 Eatontown Handicap, earning R1,267,505 and $378,333 respectively.

From the age of 2 to 5 she won over distances of 1200 – 1800 metres, including the Gr1 Golden Slipper, the Gr1 Woolavington 2000, Gr1 Empress Club Stakes, Gr2 Ipi Tombe Challenge and the Gr3 Strelitzia.

In America she went on to prove herself by placing in the Gr1 Beverly D Stakes, Gr1 Yellow Ribbon and third in the Miss Liberty Listed Stakes.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-6544" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Romany-Prince-London-News-Stakes-570x363-300x191.jpg" alt="Romany Prince wins the Gr3 London News Stakes.
Her first foal, a filly by Street Cry named Know, won and placed in Ireland from seven starts and sold at Goff’s 2015 breeding stock sale to Japanese interests for €50,000. Gypsy’s Warning has since foaled to the great chestnut galloping machine owned by Team Valor, Animal Kingdom.

Gypsy Queen’s Black Type achievements at stud havent stopped there, and her Gr3 winning son of Kahal is a five-time winner. Aptly named Romany Prince and in training with Ormond Ferraris, he is a winner the Gr3 London News Stakes and the Drum Star Listed. The R400 000 National Yearling Sales graduate has in addition, placed in several Graded Stakes races including the Gr3 Jubilee Handicap.

Romany Prince is bred on similar lines to Gypsy’s Warning – her sire Mogok is a half-brother to Machiavellian, whilst Romany Prince by Kahal is a son of Machiavellian – the common denominator being the broodmare Coup de Folie. Interestingly, Know’s sire Street Cry is also a son of Machiavellian.

All her descendants to sell at sales since 2003 have sold for a combined total of over R5 million between them at yearling sales, with 38 wins accumulated and five Black Type.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-7349" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/Sundari-300x166.jpg" alt="Sundari.
Gypsy Queen is by Gr1 Durban July winner Royal Chalice and a daughter of Sara’s Warning by Caveat – her dam a half-sister to Smart Nuff (USA) and Shy Groom (USA).

This family includes the closely related Gr2 Drill Hall Stakes winner Tales Of Bravery, and amongst a plethora of Black Type entries from an overseas damline is nine-time and Gr1 winner Pierre Jourdan, and his siblings Gr2 winner Champagne Haze and Belle Rose.

Stallions to come out of the female line include British Gr1 Prince Of Wales Stakes winner Morcon, Lord Lister (USA), Clever Allemont (USA), French-bred Noalcoholic and Alluvia.

It is an active female line that has helped not only Rathmor Stud in future pedigree histories to come – her daughters are young at stud and from the promising start of her grandchildren, more to look forward to in the future from this damline of a special broodmare that has clearly begun her own dynasty.

Rest In Peace Gypsy Queen.

Rathmor-bred Romany Prince continued the good family name of his dam with an easy win the Gr3 London News Stakes. The son of Kahal and a half- sibling to several top horses including American and South African Gr1 winner, Gypsy’s Warning, also gave Ormond Ferraris his 2500th win in 2016 when he took home the Drum Star Listed.

Well fancied at 16-10, Romany Prince was relaxed two lengths back in third as customary front-runner Stonehenge led Supreme Cup winner Deputy Jud for home.

The astute Gavin Lerena was wide awake to what was required and shook his mount up to get first run on Deo Juvente at the 300m.

A former Summer Cup runner-up, Deo Juvente looked likely to find his feet and make a battle of it, but he changed legs and took a while to catch his footing as Romany Prince galloped powerfully.

Lerena had a half length to spare at the line as he took it easy in the final strides to register Romany Prince’s biggest career win in a time of 111.82 secs.

Romany Prince as a foal with his dam.

Romany Prince sold at the National Yearling Sale for R450 000, and races in the colours of Peter Dimakogiannis. The plain dark bay gelding has earned R544 525 in 18 career starts, with five wins and five places.

Gypsy Queen is a full sister to SA Oaks winners Royal Prophecy and Noble Destiny.

The daughter of Royal Chalice and Sara’s Warning was voted KZN Breeders Broodmare Of The Year, and she has been an incredible asset to Rathmor Stud.

She is 22 years old and looks an absolute picture at her age, and the very exciting news from last season is that she foaled a Noble Tune filly. The mare is back in foal to Noble Tune again this season.

She has produced six winners including Gr2 winner Surabi (the dam of Sundari), Gypsy’s Warning and Stakes Placed Gypsy Madonna, the former a resident of Varsfontein Stud.

Gypsy’s Warning stands at stud in America and has produced a winner from her first foal, a Street Cry filly who raced in Ireland named Know. Gypsy’s Warning has progeny on the ground by Animal Kingdom.

Congratulations to Rathmor Stud and the winning connections!

Rathmor-bred Romany Prince, a Kahal half-brother to American and South African multiple Gr1 winner Gypsy’s Warning, not only gave his dam more Black Type by winning the Drum Star Handicap Listed but in the process, Ormond Ferraris’ 2500th winner in a career spanning 64 years. Scott Bros’ Gr2 winning son of Miesque’s Approval, Judicial, finished closely in second position.

It was fitting that the milestone was achieved in the colours of owner Peter Dimakogiannis, who has only ever had his horses in training with Ormond and has held his colours since 1972.

Jockey Muzi Yeni, who replaced the injured Anthony Delpech, rode a cracker to steal a march on his field at the right time and withstand a late challenge from the gallant Judicial by a half length in a time of 110,79 secs. “I am very grateful for the support and had lots in my favour with a one draw and a light weight. I was there for free and tracked the front horses who faded out at the top of the straight. I asked Romany Prince for his final effort at the 200m and he gave it to me. It is an honour to be part of this great moment and my sympathies go out to Anthony Delpech,” said Yeni.

The three year old colt by Kahal sold for R450 000 at the 2014 National Yearling Sale, and has won three times, placed four – including second to Abashiri in the Sea Cottage Listed Stakes.

The success of Machiavellian is the common denominator of Gypsy’s Warning and her half-brother Romany Prince, with Mogok being a half-brother to Machiavellian and Kahal a son of the same great stallion.

Gypsy Queen, a full sister by Royal Chalice (who only won once) to Oaks winners’ Royal Prophecy and Noble Destiny, is also leaving her mark at stud through her daughters – American Gr1 star Gypsy’s Warning (by Scott Bros’ sire Mogok) has produced a winner in Ireland (named Know) by Street Cry, whilst Gr2 winner Surabi has produced 3-time winner, Sundari (by Fort Wood).

Another daughter Gypsy Madonna (by Fort Wood) was purchased by Varsfontein Stud from the National Yearling Sale, going on to win twice and place in the Winter Oaks Listed. She has her first foal, a lovely big filly by Judpot, on the ground this year.

Voted KZN Breeders Broodmare Of The Year, Gypsy Queen has produced nine foals, six winners and three of them now Stakes winners.

A big, elegant mare with a beautiful head and a lovely temperament, Gypsy Queen sadly slipped to Var two years ago, but at 21 years of age she is currently in foal to exciting KZN stallion prospect Noble Tune, a very exciting combination indeed.

Gypsy Queen has another exciting young filly coming through – a lovely chestnut two year old by Silvano named Judi Silvano. She sold for R400 000 at the 2015 Durbanville CTS Ready To Run Sale.
