It was the Gr1 winning chestnut daughter of Byword who proved the star of the show, with Camphoratus winning several awards including Champion Middle Distance Female, Champion Older Female and KZN Breeders Horse Of The Year.

Jane Thomas collected the Horse Of The Year Award on behalf of the Pickering’s for Camphoratus. Image: Candiese Lenferna

Her dam, imported Horse Chestnut mare Wild Camphor, was crowned Broodmare Of The Year. The latter only produced two foals at stud – the first a winner and the second and last was Camphoratus, who interestingly only sold for R50 000 at the KZN Yearling Sale.

Her breeders, Rob and Michele Pickering who have since relocated to the Eastern Cape, retained a share in her and Robbie Hill has achieved great success – winning not only the Gr1 Empress Club Stakes, but the Gr3 Flamboyant and placing second to her nemesis, Running Brave, in the Gr2 Gold Bracelet. Running Brave took home the Champion 3YO Filly award, and ran a close second to Camphoratus in the Gr1 Empress Club Stakes.

Wave, a Scott Bros-bred son of Mogok who placed in a Gr1 at Scottsville, interestingly was purchased off the KZN Yearling Sale for R100 000 using vouchers won from the 2018 KZN Breeders Golf Day by the Van Zyls!

Cathy and Jonathan Martin represented St John Gray’s Graystone Stud. Image: Candiese Lenferna

Another stud to feature prominently was that of Graystone Stud, owned by St John Gray who performs an outstanding achievement of breeding, owning and training for himself – and in most cases, the horses bred are by / out of parents bred, trained and owned by St John himself – including Call To Combat.

Ronnie’s Candy was a numerous nominee and will definitely be in the running for an award next year, but Dawn Assault cleaned up taking Champion Older Male and Champion Middle Distance Male. St John Gray was rewarded with Breeders Achievement, and MC Warren Lenferna read out his staggering stats. Cathy and Jonathan Martin represented Graystone – they look after St John’s breeding operation within theirs at their farm in Mooi River, Hadlow Stud.

St John’s stats are incredible – according to Racebook.co.za, he is currently on 999 wins, R79,286,907 in lifetime stakes earned with 2 914 places. Even more impressive is that St John has raced and bred most of his horses parents as well so to speak – it truly is a massive achievement.

The Late Crusade captured KZN Breeders Stallion Of The Year again (Sponsored by the TBA), and on Sunday his diminutive daughter Whizz Of Odds gave Gavin Van Zyl a large smile, after winning both of her races in a row. She is bred by Rob Knupper of the Missing U Syndicate.

Other awards for special recognition went to two very well deserving recipients – Dr Allen Bechard received the Anita Akal Industry Award for his years of servicing the breeding industry in KZN, and Bruce Le Roux of Spring Valley Stud was emotional when he heard he was receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award and received a full standing ovation from his peers and colleagues. Warwick Render, his friend and colleague, read a moving speech on the life of Bruce Le Roux (who amongst his Gr1 winners bred, was Vodacom Durban July winner Dunford) and his achievements, hardly leaving a dry eye in the room.

Rathmor Stud enjoyed a superb day – their filly Mississippi Burning flew the flag to win the Gr1 Cape Fillies Guineas, and Nexus took home Champion 3YO Colt. The full brother to Gr1 winner Lady In Black will be aimed at the Cape features, the Snaith Racing Stable has reported on their social media.

Champion Breeders once again went to Summerhill Stud, who also took home two awards – one for Champion Sprinter Male – Africa Rising, and the other for Running Brave (Brave Tin Soldier). They also accepted the award for Stallion Prospect, multiple Black Type filly Brandina shot her sire Capetown Noir into the highlights for the last season.

All the awards named below – thank you to our valued sponsors for your generosity!

KZN featured on Gold Cup Day with #kznbred Spiced Gold producing Gr3 Umkhomazi Stakes winner, Chimichuri Run, whilst Summerhill-bred Railtrip finished second in the Gr1 Thekweni Stakes, with Noble Tune’s Play Another Tune fourth in the Gr1 Premiers Champion Stakes. Another interesting results for Rathmor Stud was Will Pays – a half-brother to Rathmor broodmare Rattled, the dam of Gr2 winner Harry Lime.

KZN opened the eLan Gold Cup day with the first two winners on the card – a flying finish by Irish Flame juvenile gelding Perpetual Flame under Muzi Yeni for Nathan Kotzen. The gelding bred by Bruce Le Roux is out of Case Stated by London News, has placed second on three occasions and had the much deserved win by almost five lengths from Podcast, and enjoyed the length in trip over 1900m.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-8465" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/R4-CHIMICHURI-RUN.jpg" alt="Chimichuri Run out of #kznbred Gr1 winning mare, Spiced Gold, takes the Gr3 Umkhomazi Stakes. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Irish Flame stands at Bush Hill Stud and is bringing home the winners, the handsome and classy son of Dynasty is currently boasting almost 32% winners to runners for the season.

Top Classman looks above average and followed through with a third career win in the second race. the Mogok has placed five times previously and earned over R250 000 to date from 13 starts for Frank Robinson and breeders Scott Bros.

Chimichuri Run, who recently was sold at the BSA Super Sale to dissolve a partnership for R1,6-million, rewarded owner Chris Van Niekerk with a facile win by almost five lengths in the Gr3 Umkhomazi Stakes. The handsome chestnut Trippi juvenile colt is out of Greenhill Farm-bred Gr1 winning mare by Kahal, Spiced Gold, bred by Drakenstein Stud. He has won twice and placed three times from all of his starts.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-8466" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/R8-Will-Pays.jpg" alt="Will Pays, a half-brother to Rathmor Stud broodmare Rattled, wins the Gr1 Mercury Sprint. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Another Trippi to impress came from Summerhill Stud, as Railtrip, beautifully bred out of a Galileo mare, finished a length off Return Flight in the Gr1 Thekweni Stakes. The filly trained by Chesney Van Zyl is sporting an impressive race record with a win and three seconds and a place from all of her starts.

Play Another Tune for Gavin Van Zyl, out of Another Goat, ran fourth in the Gr1 Premiers Champions Stakes over 1600m. The consistent juvenile gelding has won and placed from five of his six starts and was only three lengths off the winner Soqrat (AUS) who has been hailed as a future stallion prospect.

Another added result for Rathmor Stud was that of Will Pays – the six year old by Imperial Stride won the Gr1 Mercury Sprint by a length and is a half-brother to Rathmor resident broodmare Rattled.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-8467" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Rattled1.jpg" alt="Rattled at Rathmor Stud, the dam of Gr2 winner Harry Lime. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Rattled has already done Rathmor proud by producing Gr2 winning Var gelding Harry Lime, and Eightfold Path 2-time winner, Mbali.

Will Pays has won 11 races and placed 11 times and earned over R1,8-million in stakes. Rattled and Will Pays are out of the speedy dam Rattlebag by Jallad.

Rattled sold her Ideal World filly in Session 1 of the National Yearling Sale earlier this year for R250 000.

Well done to the winning connections of the following horses and once again KZN has done itself proud with big results from small numbers.

KZN once again had success yesterday with a half-sister to Gr1 winner Lady In Black from Rathmor, whilst Bezanova’s half-brother sold from Clifton to Chris Gerber, whilst Hadlow sold their outstanding Querari to Mary Slack.

Session 1 saw Rathmor Stud sell The Vow, an Oratorio half-sister to charismatic KZN owner Alesh Naidoo for R425 000. Mystery Dame has now produced two winners, with Fragrant Miss and her Dynasty daughter who is a July entrant, Lady In Black.

Bruce Le Roux’s outstanding Querari colt was knocked down to Lowan Denneyschen for R210 000. The colt is out of National Arabian, out of a National Assembly / Al Mufti mare. This is the family of O Caesar, Harry’s Charm and National Currency.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-large wp-image-8021" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/3L8A0452-1024x683.jpg" alt="The Master Of My Fate half-brother to Bezanova.
Roski Stud brought a super draft to Nationals, and John Freeman picked up their Lot 188 for R200 000, named Captain Tatters – the name is a special one, which was a nick-name for the late Greg Royden-Turner who founded Roski Stud. This is a son of Gimmethegreenlight, a second foal for Lady Tatty whose Irish Flame 2yo colt won impressively at Greyville on the turf on debut.

Clifton Stud sold their outstanding Master Of My Fate half-brother to Gr2 winner Bezanova, to the same connections as the great white socked chestnut – Mr Chris Gerber bought the colt for R375 000 to be trained by Alec Laird. The colt named Arrownova was sold as Lot 344.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-large wp-image-8022" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/3L8A0502-1024x683.jpg" alt="Your Pace Or Mine sold to Mary Slack from Hadlow for R280 000.
Another Querari attracted attention from a lady who has had massive success with Querari’s Monks Hood – Mary Slack purchased Hadlow’s eyecatcing Querari named Your Pace Or Mine for R280 000. The flashy black colt with white socks is out of Var mare Anatevka. This is the damline of Captain America.

Another Crusade attracted attention, as Scott Bros imposing colt out of Jet Master mare We Have Lift Off, sold for R360 000 to Mr S Habib. Named Lynty’s Legacy, this is the family of Spring Garland, Real Princess, William Longsword and Victory Moon.

Rathmor Stud did KZN very proud with exceptional results over the three days of the National Yearling Sale with their registered KZN-breds – overall the National Yearling Sale surprised many with extraordinary results for a supressed economic climate.

Rathmor Stud sold eight yearlings for an average of R525 000 – bringing a very strong draft to the sales after acquiring choice broodmares to bolster the books of their exciting stallion Noble Tune, and they reaped the rewards for their hard work and astitute purchases which put Rathmor firmly on the map at the sale. What is even more exciting is the anticipation of seeing the yearlings to come in future from this farm that has achieved international and local Gr1 successes.

On the last day, Rathmor Stud’s Captain Al filly out of Kiribati (named Kir) was knocked down for R700 000 to Brett Crawford. Rathmor opened the batting early with their Dynasty colt selling to leading bloodstock agent John Freeman for R1,7-million, who also secured their Silvano colt for R700 000.

All of Rathmor’s yearlings were registered with the KZN Breeders Premium Scheme which means that they qualify for the added incentives offered by the KZN Breeders Club and will earn their breeders a premium annually from minor stakes accumulated, capped at R100 000 earnings per horse. The rules do allow for mares to be mated outside of KZN, as long as the stallions are alternated with KZN resident sires each year and the mares are returned to KZN within the 6 month window period set in the rules.

Crusades son – a half-brother to Gr1 winner Wild One and Gr3 Save The Rhino sold to Ormond Ferraris for R400 000. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Not surprisingly, the Noble Tune’s were enthusiastically received by buyers and he attained an impressive average of R223 333 for six yearlings sold; the most expensive an imposing and flashy colt from Lee and Dino Scribante’s Piemonte Stud which was spotted frequently being pulled out of by prospective buyers for inspection, walking up and down the black tar strips in the stable block of Piemonte Stud and standing out with his broad white blaze, masculine features and stockings.

Crusade still remained popular – selling 16 yearlings for a credible average of R133 000 each. Early in the season, he has had three wins and almost every single one of his progeny have placed to date, placing him firmly in the first three of the national juvenile sires log.

Eightfold Paths son from Rathmor Stud sold to Howells Racing for R150 000. He is out of Glittering Temple by Windrush. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Eightfold Path saw a beautiful dark bay colt with an usual white blaze knocked down to Howells Racing for R100 000. Scott Bros other sire, the evergreen Mogok who had another Gr1 second place at Turffontein with Varsfontein-bred Pagoda, averaged an impressive R173 000 for four lots sold – his progeny are forever in demand and Robin Scott believes he will reproduce as a broodmare sire at stud – already showing his colours with grandson, Matador Man.

Scott Bros superb Crusade colt was not ignored, a very handsome individual oozing quality and presence since his birth, the half-brother to Gr1 winner Wild One and Gr3 placed Save The Rhino saw enthusiastic bidding in the ring to be knocked down for R400 000 to maestro Ormond Ferraris – who trains Save The Rhino and holds the son of Mogok in very high regard. Sold as Lot 382 and named Rescue, the Crusade colt is a half-brother to five winners including Equus Champion Stayer Wild One, Gr1 placed Extinct and of course, Save The Rhino.

Bush Hill Stud, who have had several winners in a week including The Poet, Atomic Belle and Aramouse on Turffontein’s super Saturday (the latter a full brother to Gr2 winner, The Mouseketeer) sold an eyecatching Irish Flame filly as agent for R150 000. The elegant daughter and a dead ringer for her multiple Gr1 winning Equus Horse Of The Year sire, will go into training with Alistair Gordon after selling to Applewood Trading. The filly is a half-sister to Black Type gelding, Mr Whatever.

Bush Hill Studs elegant Irish Flame filly, a half-sister to Mr Whatever. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Michael Benson’s Kjell Foundation achieved results with both yearlings consigned sold – the first, a three parts sister to winners Kanonkop and Wynkelder (by Mogok) went to Duncan Howells racing for R200 000, whilst their Toreador sold to World Wide Bloodstock for R140 000. The breeders of Eastern Greeting, Kalaam and Kwinta can never be ignore when bringing a yearling to sale afer achieving extraordinary results from a handful of mares.

Syd and Shirley Rosseau of St Helier Stud, the breeders of Madigan, have invested in over the past few years in a small well-bred band of broodmares and their persistence paid off with two of their four yearlings selling for over R300 000, lead by an exceptional chestnut What A Winter colt for R375 000. Glen Kotzen picked up their racy and athletic Var filly for a song at R225 000, while Michael Lee purchased their classic looking Fort Wood colt for R300 000. Oratorina, the filly from the immediate family of Pocket Power and River Jetez was a bargain for Gavin Van Zyl at R100 000.

Lloyd George, a Fort Wood colt from St Helier sold for R300 000.
The National Yearling Sale overall saw 369 yearlings sold for an average of R303 726 each. A Bloodstock South Africa sales record was set with a yearling from Varsfontein sold to Shadwell Stud for R5-million. The daughter of Var out of a maiden Captain Al mare Fidelity hails from the family of Promiseofmyheart, Hack Green, Master Of My Fate and Pluck.

The second highest colt of the sale was a son of Silvano out of a full sister to KZN-based sire, Capetown Noir.

KZN’s Gr1 Middle Park Stakes winner, Crusade lead the first season sires list by aggregate at the Sibaya KZN Yearling Sale.

The imposing black stallion who stamps his progeny in no uncertain terms impressed at Nationals with an average of R160 000 for 18 yearlings sold, and this time he achieved an aggregate of aggregate R1 355 055 for 26 yearlings sold. His top priced yearlings sold for R250 000 and R200 000 respectively, both consigned by Scott Bros.

The first was a magnificent chestnut filly named Wings Of Honor, out of a Jet Master mare, and the second is a half-brother to Son Of Silver – out of Silver Moon by Model Man, purchased by Frank Robinson. Summerview Stud, owned by Gary and Colleen De Klerk, sold a beautiful liver chestnut colt named Ice Crusade for R100 000 from the damline of Bridal Paths.

Eightfold Path was another stallion that proved popular, his impressive colt from Danika Stud knocked down for R160 000 to Pat Lunn. The second was a super filly named Passioneight, out of a full sister to Gr1 winner Scarena, sold for R125 000 to AFJ Duncan from Scott Bros.

Piemonte Stud’s top priced Toreador colt – the top priced KZN colt of the day out of Wishful Eye by Var, sold for R230 000.
Toreador proved popular on the second day for the KZN-bred horses, with both his top prices coming for a colt and filly respectively. The filly named Solitaire, a big imposing individual (and a late foal) with a powerful hindquarter sold for R280 000 from Bush Hill Stud to Garth Puller.

She is out of Sheer Brilliance by Kahal, and a clever mating to be a three-parts sister to 5-time winner, Gemini Gold (by Overlord – who shares the sire Danehill with Toreador). Sheer Brilliance has bred four runners and four winners to date. This is a powerful damline of Thousand Nights – with the likes of Highland Night, Warm White Night, Prince Asad, Fort Vogue and Whatalady present.

Rathmor Stud sold two top fillies by Brave Tin Soldier – both chestnuts respectively for R260 000 and R100 000.
Piemonte Stud followed suit with an outstanding powerhouse of a Toreador colt, the first living foal from Var speedster Wishful Eye – a filly that finished only three quarters of a length behind her super paternal half-sister Val De Ra, in the KwaZulu Natal Stakes Listed. Named Filippo, he sold as Lot 213 to Toyco Engineering for R230 000.

Rathmor Stud presented two chestnuts by Brave Tin Soldier, the sire of dual Gr1 winner Rabada, which sold for R280 000 and R100 000 respectively.

Day 2 of the National Yearling Sale yielded very pleasing results, in particular for Bush Hill Stud who sold the top-priced KZN colt to date with a magnificent son of Kahal out of Plutonium by Muhtafal, for R650 000.

The half-brother sold as Lot 265 to the brilliant Orion Quest and King Neptune is destined for the racing stable of Alec Laird – the colt descends from one of Bush Hill’s best families of Gr1 winners’ Zirconeum and Stellite.

The top priced filly of the day went to Rathmor’s beautiful Mbali as Lot 283, a daughter of first season sire and a French Gr3 winning son of Giant’s Causeway – Eightfold Path, his top priced yearling to date. The well related filly is a half-sister to Gr2 winner Harry Lime, and sold for R325 000 to Louis Goosen. She is a grand-daughter of the very fast Rattlebag.

Other horses to impress was Avison and Mary Carlisle’s smashing Visionaire colt from their Kinmount Stud, aptly named A Vision (Lot 285). He sold for R400 000, out of Avison’s top mare Rebel Qui by Qui Danzig. The colt is a half-brother to multiple Graded Stakes Placed Patriotic Rebel.

St Helier Stud featured again with their classy Var colt out of Maximum Break, the dam a half-sister to Pocket Power and River Jetez. Sold as Lot 206 named Varimax, he went to Misty Meadows for R325 000.

KZN’s first season sire’s – both Crusade and Eightfold Path from Scott Bros have impressed in the sales ring and their stats speak for themselves, with Gr1 Middle Park Stakes winner Crusade averaging R165 000 for each of his 11 yearlings sold. Eightfold Path has achieved R176 250 from four yearlings sold, an excellent return on investment considering his service fee is just R5 000.

The top price of the National Yearling Sale remains R2,500 000, whilst the average sold is R328 059. 302 Lots have been catalogued with 219 sold, 47 not sold and 23 vendor buy backs.

The last day takes place Friday 29 April at 3pm, with Lots 303 – 453 going under the hammer.
