Rathmor Stud’s beautiful grey-almost white Witblits has won three races in a row since her relocation to Gauteng to the stable of Tony Peter and relishing the extra distance on offer.

The beautifully-bred daughter of Danon Platina, out of Galileo mare Untoward is bred on the same cross that produced Gr1 Epsom Derby winner Auguste Rodin, and the connections are excited for her future, toying with thoughts of having a tilt at the Oaks in the coming months.

Owned by Suzette and Basie Viljoen, the grey filly sold for R720 000 at the 2022 August 2YO Sale, consigned by Millstream Farm.

This is the family of Eliza and Hong Kong Black Type 6-time winner, Absolute Fantasy.

Untoward has a Lancaster Bomber for her 2021 year, and has since visited Rathmor’s stallion Declarationofpeace (War Front), who has a yearling named Chaos Queen.

Rathmor Stud enjoyed a double at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Wednesday.

Both horses are owned by Mario Ferreria, trained by Louis Goosen and ridden by Chase Maujean, and both celebrated their fifth career win respectively.

Rodriguez (Twice Over – Jane S Piddy) has now won twice in a row over 1950m and a mile respectively.

His dam, Jane S Piddy, is a very well related daughter of Trippi from the immediate family of another Rathmor Gr1 producing mare, Mystery Dame. It’s the family of Nexus who has several nominations in Decembers KZN Breeders Awards, as well as Lady In Black, Solid Speed and Lizarre.

William Longsword mare Crazy Blues, out of Bristol Blue by Western Winter, descends from another leading family of Russian Sage, Smiling Blue Eyes, Cerulean Blue and Grey Sun. Crazy Blues has won over 1200m – 1900m and Wednesdays victory was particularly impressive by two lengths from Gr1 placed Magical Flight.

Rathmor Stud are on a 27% winners to runners percentage and stand the son of War Front, Declarationofpeace, at stud.

The first race of the day, Callmegetrix, a Vercingetorix half sister to 5-time winner Spyda’s Corner and 4-time winner Purple Powahouse (both owned by Hollywood Syndicate) won for owner Mario Ferreira, trained by Candice Bass Robinson and ridden by Aldo Domeyer. The filly had placed twice previously before winning over 1400m. This is the family of Chant De Nuit and African Ruler.

The second race saw the handsome Harajuku, a Danon Platina colt out of Approach Me winning for owners Mr Greg Bortz & Ms Gina Goldsmith, trained by Justin Snaith and ridden by Grant Van Niekerk. A smashing colt who sold for R550 000 at the 2022 Cape Yearling Sale, the colt had placed twice previously over 1200m and stepped up in trip to win over a mile. This is the family of Arcsa champion Joie De Grise.

Race 7 Ntabazondi, by Mogok out of Flower Power by Jet Master won for owner JML Equestrian Ltd (Nom: Jean- Michel Lee-Shim), trained by Des McLachlan and ridden by Morne Winnaar. It is the second win for this Mogok who previously raced in KZN and Gauteng.

Rathmor Stud are on 40% winners to runners for the season, with over R2,6-million in stakes earned and and AEPR of R55 000.

Missisippi Burning wins the Gr2 KZN Fillies Guineas (Pic – Candiese Lenferna)

The Rathmor-bred Missisippi Burning, who was raced here by Mario Ferreira and trained by Adam Marcus – she was his first Gr1 winner – is a dual Guineas winner, having also won the WSB Gr2 Fillies Guineas at Hollywoodbets Greyville.

A daughter of multiple champion Captain Al (Al Mufti) , she is out of the Australian bred Hussonet mare Spitfire Lady and won 5 races from 1000m to a mile.

Missisippi Burning was a R380 000 BSA National Yearling Sale purchase.

Yulong’s Sam Fairgray said of the Newgate Consignment, Aberdeen, NSW (As Agent) lot:

“Missisippi Burning’s supposed to be carrying a colt, we saw last week those couple of Frankel colts sold very well as weanlings, but we’ll most likely keep them and race them. She’ll probably go to Tagaloa next.Size-wise, she probably just needs a little bit of leg, which he’ll give and the pedigree works on paper.”

Yulong’s Sam Fairgray speaks to the media (Pic – Magic Millions)

One of their high profile purchases was the featured Lot 910, an English-bred mare carrying a cover to Frankel (GB).

Yulong parted with A$1 375 000 to secure the beautifully prepared mare out of Arrowfield Stud’s draft and Sam Fairgray was very clear on the appeal to Great Vibes (GB), “She was a beautiful mare, probably the best-looking mare in-foal to Frankel, so we’re really pleased to be taking her home. It’s a nice early service, if it comes out looking like her it’ll be a good sort!”

“It is very difficult but with the mares that you really want, the quality, you’ve got to pitch up and go for them because at the end of the day you’ll get rewarded on the other side,” Fairgray observed.

“You’re better off buying the mares that you really want and know that are going to leave you the right physical down the track because you’ll get the results in the sale ring with their yearlings.”

Besides Missisippi Burning, on Thursday Yulong also purchased the dam of Stradbroke fancy Yellow Brick, Magical Mist (NZ), in foal to Maurice (JPN) for A$775,000.

They also purchased Elliptical’s dam Marquise Dar Rossa in foal to So You Think for A$675 000 and four mares in foal to northern hemisphere superstar Frankel, Siyouni (FR) mares Pledged (GB) and Small Print (GB) for A$700 000 each and Murasaki (GB) for A$500 000.

Rathmor Stud, breeders of the likes of Gypsy’s Warning, Missisippi Burning and this season’s G2 Peninsula Handicap winner Nexus, will be offering an eye catching draft at the upcoming National Yearling Sale.

Not only does this draft include yearlings by such popular stallions as Danon Platina, Legislate and Vercingetorix, Rathmor will be offering lots out of some very classy racemares and producers.

Hussonet mare Spitfire Lady has already produced four winners headed by the Rathmor bred G1 WSB Cape Fillies Guineas winner Missisippi Burning, and she has a colt (Lot 94) by the outstanding Vercingetorix on sale. This colt has headliner written all over him!

Vercingetorix is also represented in this draft by a colt (Lot 24) whose Commands sired dam won six times including the G3 Flamboyant Stakes, and this colt’s granddam was sired by breed-shaping stallion Unbridled’s Song.

Other appealing lots to be found in this draft include the Legislate full-brother (Lot 251) to classy filly Veronica Mars, with this colt also a half-brother to this season’s G3 Lebelo Sprint winner Taikonaut, and the Danon Platina colt (Lot 325) out of a stakes winning daughter of Trippi.

The evergreen Justin Snaith trained son of Dynasty, Nexus, dominated the Gr2 Ridgemont Highlands Peninsula Stakes at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth to win for breeders Rathmor Stud and owner Mrs Nancy Hossack on Hollywoodbets Cape Guineas Day.

The 7 year old gelding, a full brother to Gr1 winner Lady In Black, made it his 9th career victory and previously won the race in 2020.

He is out of Mystery Dame by Jet Master. The mare has foaled to Rathmor’s son of War Front this season, and is back in foal to Declarationofpeace again this year.

Nexus has developed an affinity for jockey Piere Strydom it seems, the pair winning the KZN Breeders Mile in 2022. Piere has ridden him in last three starts for two wins and a second place in the Listed Memorial Mile at Fairview.

A R1,7-million National Yearling Sale purchase in 2017, Nexus has had 9 wins and 10 places from 31 starts for earnings of R1,331,725 and doesn’t look to be stopping anytime soon!

His Oratorio half sister, The Vow, stands at Blue Sky Thoroughbreds as a broodmare.

Rathmor Stud’s son of War Front is preparing for his second season at stud in South Africa. He is the third son of his Storm Cat dam Serena’s Cat to stand at stud – his older brothers being Gr1 winner Honor Code (AP Indy) and Noble Tune (Unbridled’s Song). Sold for $2,6-million as a weanling, Declarationofpeace has a great temperament and amongst his three wins is the Del Mar Breeders Cup Qatar Juvenile Turf Sprint Stakes Listed. 

Declarationofpeace arrived late from America for the breeding season in 2021 with a full book of mares of 82 mares with an 86% fertility rate. A decision was made not to market the stallion in 2021 due to his full book. A limited number of shares will be sold on a first come first basis. 

Amongst the mares Declarationofpeace covered in his first season were Mystery Dame, dam of Gr 1 winner Lady In Black, Wysiwyg – dam of Gr 1 winner Bohica and Gr1 runner up Bartholdi, Earth’s Orbit – dam of Veronica Mars and Mercury Rising, Queen of Spain – the dam of feature winner Hasta Manana and a host of well performed mares that were acquired especially for his arrival. Declarationofpeace has not only enjoyed support from the breeders in KZN but also from the Cape.

Declarationofpeace has got off to a cracking start at stud which includes an outstanding quality of broodmares.

Notably amongst them is Jet Master mare Mystery Dame – the dam of Gr1 winner Lady In Black and Gr2 Snaith-trained winner, Nexus.

Covering a full book of 86 in his first season, amongst the mares is the likes of Mile High (Captain Al), Clifton Sunset (an imported mare by Canford Cliffs from the immediate family of sire Philanthropist), and Galileo mare Untoward, who is the dam of Captain Who.

Gr3 winner Queens Command (by Commands) is an interesting pedigree. She is out of an Unbridled’s Song mare which will suit Declarationofpeace very well.

There is also the very well bred Trippi mare Jane S Piddy, the dam of winner Rodriguez – which is also the female line of Mystery Dame mentioned above, as well as South African-bred Singapore champion Lizarre and the family of Dance With Al.

Mike McHardy of Rathmor Stud has described Declarationofpeace as “a really good looking horse who is very well put together.”

The son of War Front covered his first mare soon after arrival and has reportedly taken to his stud career with ease.

A $2,6-million dollar weanling from the exceptional female line of Serena’s Song and a half-brother to Gr1 winner and producer Honor Code and Noble Tune, Declarationofpeace was a precocious 2yo.

His book for 2021 is full and special dispensation has been given to select approved mares who qualify for Rathmor’s “Come For The Ride” incentive.

The diminutive Rathmor-bred Captain Al filly Missisippi Burning, gave young trainer Adam Marcus his maiden Gr1 win in December last year and she produced the magic again as she bounced back off a 25 week break to score a dramatic last gasp victory in the R150 000 World Sports Betting Gr2 Fillies Guineas at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Sunday.

“Her temperament almost got to her behind the stalls. I thought we would be scratched. Then between the 300m to 100m I could see the front-runner wasn’t stopping. The nerves were there! But she personifies the ‘dynamite in small packages’ tag and she delivered when I asked,” said a clearly relieved jockey Craig Zackey.

With the pace sedate early as nobody was keen to go , Gareth Wright was a reluctant Pied Piper on Lady Legend as Driving Miss Daisy and Mary O tracked  her into the home run.

Serino Moodley slipped his field at the 300m as Mary O looked to cause the upset at 50-1.

At the 200m Mary O held a solid lead and wasn’t stopping as Missisippi Burning dashed for the inside and went for a narrow gap on the rail.

The Cape Fillies Guineas winner caught the Lezeanne Forbes galloper on the line to win by a short head in a time 98,70 secs.

Interbet-sponsored Adam Marcus described his special filly as having a heart of gold.

“I was very impressed. She loves a fight and she got one today. Thanks to Mario Ferreira and Des Gonsalves for their support. And to Craig Zackey – a great ride.”

Bred by Rathmor Stud, Missisippi Burning is by champion sire Captain Al (Al Mufti) out of the multiple stakes-placed Hussonet mare Spitfire Lady, who won four times in Australasia.

Missisippi Burning, a R380 000 National Yearling Sale graduate, has won 5 races with 2 places from 8 starts for stakes of R887 802.

It was just about a Guineas double for KZN, as Drakenstein-bred Wild Coast ran a cracker to nab the World Sports Betting Guineas. He is out of a previous KZN Breeders Horse Of The Year, Beach Beauty.
