While small in numbers, Piemonte Stud will be represented by high-quality individuals at the 2023 August Two Year Old Sale.

The Piemonte Stud will be offering two well related fillies at the August Sale in the form of daughters of Global View and What A Winter respectively. Galileo horse Global View, whose progeny include G1 Daily News 2000 runner up Dave The King and East Cape champion Global Drummer among others, is represented here by a filly (Lot 94) whose four time winning dam is a Var half-sister to millionaire Storm Warning, and this filly’s fourth dam is none other than multiple champion Olympic Duel.

What A Winter, whose progeny include recent G1 Jonsson Workwear Computaform Sprint winner Isivunguvungu, is the sire of Buttafuori (Lot 73), a filly out of a four time winning daughter of outstanding broodmare sire Horse Chestnut who hails from the same female line as such international standouts as Colonial Affair, Declaration Of War and Union Rags among others.

Piemonte’s two fillies can be found in Block E at the TBA Complex in Germiston.

Wendy Whitehead enjoyed a stellar race day at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Wednesday, bringing five winners home and doubles for two of her owners – Ittsa IT & Business Solutions and owner and breeder, Mrs Nothemba Mlonzi of Mwetwood Stud in Birnamwood, situated outside of Howick. Four of Wendy’s five winners were #kznbred.

The day started with Piemonte bred son of Crusade out of a Tapit mare, Grande Lupo, breaking his maiden under Calvin Habib who rode four of Wendy’s winners. A R90 000 graduate off the August 2YO Sale, this is the female line of the mighty American Gr1 winner Dortmund and Mogambo.

mageThe beautiful Mvulazana skips home, another out of a Tapit mare. Image: Candiese Lenferna

Next it was a double for Mrs Nothemba Mlonzi, who has John Fox taking care of her breeding and racing affairs and who was on course to enjoy the double. Sky Cafe, by Toreador and the picture of consistency, broke her maiden over 1400m once again under Habib. She is out of Fair Archer, a half sister to dual Gr1 winner Happy Archer.

The beautifully-bred and flashy Mvulazana followed suit; by Soft Falling Rain out of another Tapit mare, feature winner Grey Light, this was the third win for the pretty chestnut filly, again under the services of Calvin Habib and won going away over the 1400m by almost two lengths.

“Team work makes the dream work.” Image: Candiese Lenferna

That gave Wendy a treble in her first three starts, and #kznbred Teichman made it five nearer the end of the day under Athandiwe Magudlwa, who the horse loves to run for. The Eightfold Path gelding bred by Scott Bros, out of an Argentine imported mare Carta Expresa, won his sixth career race – from his last nine starts, he has won three and and only been out of the money for owners Messrs G S Perkins, I D Howard, Sanjeev Ramsewak & Sanjeeth Ramsewak on one occasion. The six year old gelding seems to be getting better as he gets older!

Congratulations to Wendy on a truly outstanding achievement!

It was a great day for #kznbreds overall, winning five races on the day after Capetown Noir gelding Straight Up was victorious in the last for trainer Duncan Howells and the SA Punters Forum Syndicate.

Well done to all concerned.

Image: Candiese Lenferna

From the first crop of William Longsword, the colt has an equally outstanding dam line from the Lammerskraal family of Redberry Lane, Solo Traveller and Flying Ice.

Piemonte followed suit on the 2nd day, selling Bethel as Lot 472 for R250 000 to Form Bloodstock. The What A Winter colt, out of Wood Sprite by Fort Wood has Murmuration as the 2nd dam – the female line of Mambo Mime, Captains Lullaby and Varbration.

Piemonte’s beautiful and almost black son of What A Winter sold to Form Bloodstock for R250 000. Image: Candiese Lenferna

Summerhill Equestrian’s Henning Pretorius was the second leading buyer of the sale, purchase three Lots for an average of R2,9-Million. His three lots included a smart Trippi colt out of Bang Sue, Lot 185 Celestial City for R7-Million (both horses bred by Wilgerbosdrift), and the beautiful bay Querari full sister to Gr2 winner, Querari Falcon, consigned by Benmarne Stud. Henning was also the underbidder on the impressive grey Silvano colt with the 2nd dam being Dancer’s Daughter, knocked down for R4,5-Million.

Henning has made his aspirations clear to assemble the best Thoroughbred bloodstock possible for his farm and to put KZN back on the map of breeding in South Africa, and we look forward to an exciting future from Summerhill Equestrian.

Congratulations to all concerned!

Piemonte’s NYS draft consistes of yearlings by such exciting young stallions as Captain Of All, Capetown Noir, Global View, Flying The Flag, Vercingetorix and Wylie Hall –making this not a draft to miss!

First into the ring is Candia (Lot 13) a regally bred daughter of Equus Champion Soft Falling Rain and Listed East Cape Fillies Nursery winner Winter Fantasy –herself a daughter of G1 Thekwini Stakes heroine Royal Fantasy.

Well performed Galileo son Global View is represented here by Caearo (Lot 136) a colt out of a eight time winning half-sister to the very speedy stakes winner Lielums, while Cerelia (Lot 187) is a Jackson filly bred on similar lines to champions Horse Chestnut and Monyela. Jackson is also the sire of Diedi (Lot 333) a colt out of the stakes winning East Cape champion Dancing Natasha, from the family of champion Beholder and red hot US sire Into Mischief.

Another young Galileo sire represented in the Piemonte draft is the blue blooded Flying The Flag, a brother to G1 winners Magical and Rhododendron. The latter has two sons on offer –a colt (Lot 263) out of a daughter of Australian G3 winner Lucky Diva, and a colt (Lot 292) whose siblings include the high class sprinter Amazing Strike.

Boom sire Vercingetorix is the sire of Campa (Lot 223) a half-brother to talented G3 performer Celestina, while another red hot stallion represented in the Piemonte draft is multiple G1 winner Wylie Hall, whose son Decimus (Lot 278) is a half-brother to multiple stakes winner A Time To Dream.

Equus Champion Capetown Noir (whose very first runner was the classy Brandina) is represented here by a half-brother (Lot 458) to the stakes winning dam of G3 Prix du Cap winner Rose In Bloom (recently sold for R800 000), while red hot sire, and European champion, Oratorio is represented by a colt (Lot 472) from the immediate family of champion sprinter and G1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Sheikh Albadou.

Yet another Equus Champion with a yearling in this draft is the very promising Captain Of All, whose first runners include the stakes winning Captain Anne Bonny. He is the sire of Cleto (Lot 493) a colt out of a winning Fort Wood own sister to G3 Peninsula Handicap winner Wonder Lawn –a former record price NYS buy!

Image: Candiese Marnewick

Piemonte Stud is firmly established on the breeding map in South Africa, with their horses easily recognisable country wide with their Italian names.

Father and son duo, Lee and Dino Scribante, have invested heavily in their broodmare band, purchasing well-bred fillies off our leading sales nationally and racing the fillies to great success and retiring them back to Piemonte.

Amongst their success stories, naming both bred and purchased are Carlita, recent 2-time winning daughter of Capetown Noir – Brandina, Alfeo, Kalamain, Celestina and the late O Tamara – and their astute purchases include the Stakes Winners Queen Forever and Beataboutthebush. Recent winners include Fillipo, Aloysius, Mia Finola and Ninnoto. Keep a watch for Elnora who impressed in her Scottsville Barrier Trial for trainer Wayne Badenhorst.

Lee and Dino offer every horse that they breed for sale, and keep the horses that don’t reach reserves when consigned. From those, Lee and his brother who race in partnership have had significant success, with 2nd placed Listed filly Brandina being one of them!

The Scribantes were involved with another late and great sire Await The Dawn, who has been a sad loss to breeding in KZN and a Gr1 producer including Hero’s Honour.

Sunday saw Tony Rivalland produce a striking win with Piemonte-bred Vinson, a very large and handsome 3yo gelding from what must be the last crop of Await The Dawn, who burnt up the turf on Sunday in the colours of Mr Sadha Naidoo.

The sizeable gelding skipped clear under Sean Veale to win by almost two lengths from Whiskey Road. He showed his potential in his Barrier Trial, skipping clear to take it by over 5 lengths with what seemed little effort. Vinson has now won and placed from only three starts and the Rivalland Stables look forward to a bright future with him. Vinson sold for R90 000 at the 2017 KZN Yearling Sale.

Piemonte are perfectionists in all they do, and are currently sporting a winners to runners percentage of 33.3% with 26 wins and 106 places for the current season, and almost R2-million in stakes earned for their horses connections.
