Gary and Colleen De Klerk’s Summerview Stud brought two very impressive individuals and were duly rewarded, averaging R175 000 for both of them. John Freeman signed the ticket for their quality What A Winter filly out of Over The Anvil, a half sister to 5-time winner and Black Type Green Lantern. The filly is owned by Nick Jonsson and is destined for the stables of Michael Roberts. This is the female line of Kochka, Kissable and Youcanthurrylove.

The other was an imposing colt out of Sahara by Crusade, snapped up by Dennis Drier on zoom for R160 000. Dennis is well acquainted with the family, having trained Desert Fighter amongst the family – the colt is a half-brother to feature winner Matador Man and to the smart Garth Puller trained Hawker Typhoon.

Clifton received sad news of their long time patron’s passing yesterday, Peter White was a great supporter of their Graded Stakes producing establishment.

Clifton brought another quality draft and Hollywoodbets Syndicate picked up a beautiful Var colt for R260 000 named Undercover Lover. Out of a Hussonet mare (the broodmare sire of Gr1 winner Mississippi Burning) this is a leading international female line of Miesque and sire Kingmambo can be found in the pedigree. Hollywood didn’t stop there with Clifton, and made the astute purchase of a high quality Noble Tune colt out of a Lundy’s Liability mare. Leading bloodstock agents John Freeman signed for two – by Flying The Flag and Admiral Kitten, whilst Form Bloodstock purchased an Ideal World filly.

Another very exciting moment saw Jessica Motaung of Kaizer Chiefs fame make her first purchase. Sold as agent for St Helier Stud, the dam of Lot 129 by Duke Of Marmalade has produced 7 runners and 7 winners, and is a full brother to grey Tupelo Honey.

Piemonte Stud’s highest purchase was Lot 388 Faustino, a half-brother to two 5-time winners in Filippo (Toreador), also Black Type, and Aldo (Redoute’s Promise). Manie Pillay signed for the colt, paying R220 000 for the son of Wishful Eye (Var) – who has the honour of being one of the few to ever beat the mighty Val De Ra on the track. This is the female line of Tetre Rouge.

Summerhill Equestrian sire Willow Magic continues to be popular, an Bush Hill Stud sold a colt out of a Jet Master mare for R200 000 to AG Racing. Bush Hill had an aggregate of R905 000 for the sale.

Both the aggregate and average price up on last year, the aggregate rising 22% from R32 660 00 to R39 715 000, and the average increasing 18,4 % from R103 028 to R122 957.

The median price also rose from 2019, increasing by 16,7% from R60 000 to R70 000.The increases in aggregate and average are a positive reflection on the quality of horse presented to the sale by breeders, while an active buying bench gives considerable hope for future sales in the coming seasons.

The KZN based Summerview Stud will be offering two, well-bred lots at this year’s Emperors Palace National 2YO Sale.

Both of Summerview Stud’s two-year-olds were sired by G1 sprinters, suggesting that both Forged In Ice and Desert Crusader will have speed to burn!

Forged In Ice (Lot 236) is a filly by four time G1 winning sprinter What A Winter, whose daughters also include dual G1 Bidvest Majorca Stakes winner Clouds Unfold. This filly is a half-sister to 3 winners, including the stakes placed Green Lantern, who between them have won 16 races.

Forged In Ice herself is out of Over The Anvil, a winning Fort Wood half-sister to G2 SA Fillies Nursery winner Dash For Gretna, and, further back, this is the family of champions Jay Peg and Kochka.

Short-lived G1 Middle Park Stakes winner Crusade is the sire of the well related Desert Crusader (Lot 280), a colt out of smart racemare Sahara. The latter not only won four times and ran second in all of the G2 KZN Fillies Guineas, G3 Umzimkhulu Stakes and G3 Flamboyant Stakes, but Sahara’s six winners, from as many runners, include millionaire and Secretariat Stakes/Christmas Handicap victor Matador Man.

Desert Crusader, a full-brother to 3 winners, sports a four time winning daughter of multiple champion sire Foveros as his granddam, while the colt’s third dam is a stakes placed daughter of champion sprinter Thatching.

Spring Valley Stud, whose past alumni include the likes of July winner Dunford as well as the G1 winning siblings Buy And Sell and Count The Money, will be offering three lots at this year’s Emperors Palace National 2YO Sale.

The KZN farm’s string is made up of two-year-olds sired by Crusade, Futura, and Judpot.

Blue blooded sire Judpot, whose progeny include champion Along Came Polly and fellow G1 winners Coral Fever, Forest Indigo and Juxtapose, is responsible for a filly (Lot 77) out of a full-sister to the four time winning dam of Eastern Cape champion Widow’s Lamp, and further back, this is the family of champion National Bay.

The short-lived Middle Park Stakes winner Crusade is represented here by Green Card (Lot 127) – a full-brother to the useful Linear and from the same family as all of Shadeed, Swale and Forty Niner.

Horse Of The Year, Futura, has made a sparkling start to his stud career, and Spring Valley Stud will be offering a very smart colt by the champion at this year’s National 2YO Sale.

Raffanetti (Lot 295) is a half-brother to six winners, including G3 winning millionaire Masai Warrior, and this colt’s dam is a half-sister to a G2 winning millionaire in the form of Natural Selection.

Hadlow Stud, long time supporter of the National 2YO Sale, will be bringing a small but classy draft to this year’s Emperors Palace National 2YO Sale.

The Mooi River farm’s consignment is made up of five two-two-year-olds, sired by all of Bezrin, Crusade, Flying The Flag, and Redoute’s Promise.

Country Flame (Lot 74) is a daughter of the Danzig horse Bezrin -sire of such high-class gallopers as All Ablaze, Bezanova, Jimmi Choo and Too Phat To Fly from limited opportunities. 

This filly is out of a half-sister to the Bezin sired All Ablaze, whose victories included a triumph in the Listed Ibhyai Stakes, and her granddam is a half-sister to the G1 winning two-year-old Mighty Crystal.

Bezrin is also responsible for a filly (Lot 251) out of the five time winner Polonaise, making the filly in question a half-sister to five winners notably dual Emerald Fillies Handicap winner and millionaire Formation, as well as G3 Gold Bowl third place finisher Swarming.

The regally bred Redoute’s Promise is the sire of an unnamed filly (Lot 81) out of the G3 placed Daintree Dancer, herself a daughter of the highly successful Australian sire Mossman. This filly, whose granddam is a full-sister to G2 Greyville 1900 winner Karaka One, hails from the same family as high-class Australian fillies as Asiago, Bendrum and Divorces.

Flag Bearer (Lot 271), a colt sired by Galileo’s blue blooded son Flying The Flag, is a half-brother to Off To Stud Stakes winner Lady Of Kildare, while the Crusade colt (Lot 171) out of the three time winning mare Knock And Announce is out of a three-parts sister to G3 Tony Ruffel Stakes winner Announce Speed.

Mooi River farm, Bush Hill Stud, will be offering a large, quality draft at the 2020 Emperors Palace National 2YO Sale.

This draft includes two-year-olds sired by the likes of Captain Of All, Crusade, Flying The Flag, Pathfork, The United States, Toreador and Willow Magic.

Bush Hill’s blue blooded sire Flying The Flag is responsible for seven lots in this draft, and the full-brother to outstanding racemare Magical has some very well related two-year-olds on offer indeed. His seven lots include Cherry Fizz (Lot 17), a filly whose 5 time winning dam is a half-sister to G1 filly She’s A Dragon, Call For Countdown (Lot 230), a colt from the family of champion sprinter Nhlavini, Catch The Cat (Lot244), a filly out of a half-sister to G2 Emerald Cup winner The Mouseketeer, and Maritime Flag (Lot 376). The latter is a half-brother to four winners notably to G3 Strelitzia Stakes winner Neptune’s Rain.

Toreador, whose progeny include such high-class gallopers as Bull Valley, Link Man and Matador Man, is the sire of Snakebite Tequila (Lot164), a filly whose granddam is a half-sister to the Bush Hill Stud bred G1 winners Stellite and Zirconeum.

Dubawi’s G1 SA Nursery winner Willow Magic has made a pleasing start to this stud career, and he has a pair of two-year-olds in this draft -Itsa Kinda (Lot 190) is a colt from the family of G1 winning two-year-old Historic Lady, while Caproni (Lot 195) is a colt whose dam is a daughter of SA Oaks winner Daddy’s Darling.

Champion sprinter Captain Of All has made a promising start to his stud career, and he is represented here by Puff Of Smoke (Lot 151), a filly bred on very similar lines to G2 sprinter Captain Harry, while Irish Champion Pathfork’s sole offering in this draft is Path Fairy (Lot 390) -a filly out of a stakes placed 4 time winner who is from the family of champions Enchantress, Harry’s Charm and National Currency.

The farm’s grooms program will be offering a colt (Lot170) from the first crop of Galileo’s G1 winning son The United States. This nicely bred colt is out of Perfect Promise Sprint winner Kitti Cat, and he hails from the same family as legendary broodmare Hasili -whose five G1 winning progeny include such Breeders’ Cup winners as Banks Hill and Intercontinental.

Other appealing lots in this draft include Merchant Gold (Lot 7), a Curved Ball colt from the family of Irridescence and Perfect Promise, a Coup De Grace (Lot 197) from the family of top sprinter and world leading sire Pivotal, and Cabin Pressure (Lot 220). The latter, a son of deceased G1 Middle Park Stakes winner Crusade, is a colt from the family of champions Gabor and Legislate.

Kjell Foundation’s spectacular son of Noble Tune was the leading colt of the 35 #kznbreds consigned to the 447 strong National 2YO Sale catalogue, whilst Spring Valley’s athletic Oratorio lead the fillies.

Mike Benson of Spurwing Horse Feeds and Kjell Foundation has had a phenomenal strike rate over the years, breeding Graded Stakes Winners and multiple winners from his handful of mares based in Karkloof.

His Noble Tune colt Praise Singer was striking at the sale, and bore a striking resemblance to his great ‘uncle’ Honor Code (Noble Tune’s half-brother), with his black coat and four white socks and outstanding conformation. Interestingly, Honor Code’s first yearlings sold for up to $850 000 at the Saratoga Select Sales at the beginning of August.

Always a major supporter of Noble Tune, Lynton Ryan went to R300 000 to secure Praise Singer as Lot 403. As it happens, Noble Tune had his fourth winner on Wednesday at Greyville with Rathmor-bred Paths Of Victory.

Praise Singer is out of the mare Natasha’s Pride, from their great family that served Kjell so well – that of Kalaam, Eastern Greeting and Kwinta – great racemares who have been acquired for stud duties at our leading country Thoroughbred nurseries.

Bruce Le Roux’s Spring Valley Stud who were KZN’s leading vendors, presented a beautiful Oratorio filly, a first foal that sold for R140 000 to Gavin Smith. Named Flame Up and sold as Lot 258, she is a first foal for her dam Flame Cat (AUS) by Tale Of The Cat. A striking bay filly, she has a beautiful walk and powerful hindquarters with plenty of speed in her pedigree.

The 2018 Emperors Palace National Two Year Old Sale ended on a positive note on Friday evening, with a high clearance rate and median increase among the notable results.
The two day auction, long renown as one of South Africa’s best value for money sales, had an aggregate of R29.33 million- up nearly 12% on the 2017 Two Year Old Sale aggregate of R26.255 million.

The average rose impressively, given a tough economic climate, from R80 785 to R90 246 (an increase of 12%), while the median reached R50 000 -a25% up on last year’s median of R40 000. Perhaps, however, the most encouraging aspect of the National Two Year Old Sale was the consistent clearance rate.

Bloodstock South Africa’s Gary Grant was delighted by the sale’s overall results, saying, “We are heartened and grateful-yet again-by the loyal suppor that both vendors and buyers have shown, with both having played a major role in creating yet another successful BSA sale. I am particularly pleased with the clearance rate and the 25% increase in the median. This sale is another ringing endorsement that the market has given Bloodstock South Africa.”

First up is Al Jazeera (Lot 34), a colt by the promising G1 winning 2yo Crusade. This colt is out of the talented racemare Saltwater Girl, herself a half-sister to the G1 performers Admiral’s Eye and Shogunnar, who won seven and ran third in the G2 Gold Circle Oaks.

Former Leading First Crop Sire Visionaire, sire of, among others, last season’s star filly Takingthepeace, is the sire of Delusional (Lot 50) –a colt out of brilliant, nine time stakes winner Silver Nun.

European champion Oratorio, recently represented by his eighth G1 winner, has a pair in this draft. His pair feature Only In My Dreams (Lot 226) –a colt bred on very similar lines to Australian G2 winner Famous Roman, and Flame Up (Lot 258). The latter is a beautifully bred daughter of G3 Pretty Polly Stakes second Flame Up –a Tale Of The Cat half-sister to 14 time stakes winner Border Rebel.

Secret Palace (Lot 279) is a Potala Palace half-sister to G3 Graham Beck Stakes second Ideal Secret (a winner in Mauritius on the weekend), while Luna Wish (Lot 303) is a daughter of red hot sire Querari (whose daughters include G1 winner Querari Falcon) out of a winning own sister to Oaks Trial winner Inaninstant.

A P Indy sire Just As Well, sire of numerous decent winners, is the sire of Cersei (Lot 329), a filly whose dam is a winning half-sister to the dam of last season’s standout Eastern Cape 2yo Madame Speaker, while multiple Equus Champion, and Champion First Crop Sire, What A Winter, is represented in the Spring Valley Stud draft by a filly (Lot 411) whose dam ran third in the G3 Fillies Mile.

European Champion Twice Over, whose first crop includes July winner Do It Again and Gold Medallion hero Sand And Sea, is also represented in this impressive draft. He is sire of the cleverly named Repetitive (Lot 425), a colt out of G3 Strelitzia Stakes winner Passive Resistance. The beautifully bred Repetitive has stakes winners as each of his first three dams!

The 2018 National Two-Year-Old Sale is set to get underway this week at the TBA complex on Thursday when trading commences at 11 am sharp.

Prominent KZN farm, the Piemonte Stud, will be offering seven high class two-year-olds at Thursday and Friday’s National Two Year Old Sale.
Pleasingly, the Piemonte Stud Grooms Program will also feature in this draft, with the grooms set to consign a striking son of G1 winner Byword in the form of Giacomo (Lot 298) at this year’s Two Year Old Sale.

Giacomo, who is out of a winning daughter of champion sire Captain Al, is from the same family as recent graded winners Bull Valley and Star Express –as well as Horse Of The Year and high class sire, Model Man.

Piemonte’s draft will include lots by popular young stallions Capetown Noir, Crusade, Jackson, Master Of My Fate and Wylie Hall –which makes this a draft a must-see for all serious buyers.

Triple G1 winner Capetown Noir is the sire of Elma (Lot 368) a filly from the same family as champion Ice Cube –with the latter, like Capetown Noir, a son of Western Winter. Pietrina (Lot 131) is a daughter of Dynasty sired Derby winner Jackson, with this filly a daughter of Var’s stakes winner Wishful Eye, and Pietrina is a ½ sister to two good winners including recent scorer Aldo.

Middle Park Stakes winner Crusade has been responsible for stakes winners in each of his first two crops and he is represented by a half-brother (Lot 160 to last season’s top class 2yo filly, and East Cape Fillies Nursery winner, Carlita, in the Piemonte draft.

Royal Ascot hero Byword is represented here by Spin Master (Lot 263) –a colt out of a winning half-sister to G2 Ipi Tombe Challenge winner First Again and this colt is from the same family as Met hero Ding Dong.

Other lots of note in the Piemonte draft include a Master Of My Fate colt (Lot 371) whose dam is a stakes placed own sister to short-lived G2 Premier Trophy winner Hundred Acre Wood, a Wylie Hall colt (Lot 189) from the same family as G1 winners Kiss Of Peace, Harry Hotspur and Rotterdam, and the Admire Main (Lot 331) full-sister to high class Eastern Cape galloper Kalamain –whose wins included the Guineas Plate.

Bush Hill Stud, perennially among KZN’s leading breeders, will, once again, be offering a high class draft at the National Two Year Old Sale this year.

The Mooi River based farm, which has produced the likes of G1 winners Wolf Whistle, Stellite and Zirconeum, offer six juveniles at the Two Year Old Sale in 2018. Their draft is dominated by resident sire and Dynasty sired Horse Of The Year Irish Flame, the sire of three of their six lots.

First of the Irish Flame sired two-year-olds from Bush Hill is King Of Tara (Lot 25), a colt whose Jallad sired dam is out of Fillies Guineas second Asmara. From the same family as recent G2 Merchants winner The Thinker, King Of Tara is bred on a similar cross to the Dynasty sired G1 winners Eyes Wide Open, It’s My Turn and Liege.

Irish Flame filly Fire Faerie (Lot 261) is out of the smart Toreador sired Flitter, whose dam is a full-sister to the stakes placed Gay Fortuna –dam of July winning champion Marinaresco, while the well related King Mouse (Lot 361) is an Irish Flame colt whose five winning siblings include G2 Emerald Cup hero The Mouseketeer and East Cape Nursery victor Lt Jerry Mouse.

Former Bush Hill Stud resident Toreador consistently sired high class performers prior to his death, with his top offspring including Equus Champion Link Man and dual G1 winner Bull Valley. Toreador is represented by two in this draft –Queen Of The Ring (Lot 353) is a filly whose dam is a half-sister to the smart, stakes performer Royal Bounty, while Toreador is also sire of a colt (Lot 412) from the same family as 11 time stakes winner Warning Sign.

Last but by no means least, Western Winter sired triple G1 winner and Equus Champion Capetown Noir is represented by a member of his first crop in the form of Bishop’s Court (Lot 323). This colt is very closely related to the Western Winter sired stakes winner She’s All That (dam of G1 performer Kilcoy Castle), and his third dam won the SA Fillies Guineas.
