The KZN based Summerview Stud will be offering two, well-bred lots at this year’s Emperors Palace National 2YO Sale.

Both of Summerview Stud’s two-year-olds were sired by G1 sprinters, suggesting that both Forged In Ice and Desert Crusader will have speed to burn!

Forged In Ice (Lot 236) is a filly by four time G1 winning sprinter What A Winter, whose daughters also include dual G1 Bidvest Majorca Stakes winner Clouds Unfold. This filly is a half-sister to 3 winners, including the stakes placed Green Lantern, who between them have won 16 races.

Forged In Ice herself is out of Over The Anvil, a winning Fort Wood half-sister to G2 SA Fillies Nursery winner Dash For Gretna, and, further back, this is the family of champions Jay Peg and Kochka.

Lot 236 by What A Winter. Image: Candiese Lenferna

Short-lived G1 Middle Park Stakes winner Crusade is the sire of the well related Desert Crusader (Lot 280), a colt out of smart racemare Sahara. The latter not only won four times and ran second in all of the G2 KZN Fillies Guineas, G3 Umzimkhulu Stakes and G3 Flamboyant Stakes, but Sahara’s six winners, from as many runners, include millionaire and Secretariat Stakes/Christmas Handicap victor Matador Man.

Desert Crusader, a full-brother to 3 winners, sports a four time winning daughter of multiple champion sire Foveros as his granddam, while the colt’s third dam is a stakes placed daughter of champion sprinter Thatching.

The 2020 Emperors Palace National 2YO Sale is set to take place at the TBA complex on November 12th and 13th, and the catalogue can be viewed online at www.bsa.co.za

Gary and Colleen De Klerk of Summerview Stud have welcomed their first foal from Mogok mare Sahara, a flashy filly by Master Of My Fate.

Summerview purchased the mare off the Scott Bros Dispersal Sale for R170 000 in foal to Crusade – Gary says the Crusade is a smashing individual who will be headed to the KZN Yearling Sale in 2020. Sahara is the dam of Gr1 placed and Stakes Winning Matador Man (Toreador).

Matador Man has earned R 1,514,700 in stakes, winning 7 times and placing 7 and preferring a mile. His wins include the Christmas Handicap Listed, winning the KZN Breeders Million Mike and the Secretariat Listed. He has also placed in a Gr1, Gr2 and Gr3.

Sahara in total has produced 5 foals and 4 winners, including Desert Fighter (3 wins) and Sand Princess (Crusade). She has a lovely 2017 unraced full sister to Matador Man to come through.

Gary advises that Sahara will be heading to Kimberley shortly to be covered by Mauritzfontein’s exciting grey Gr1 winning son of Deep Impact, Danon Platina.

Congratulations to all at Summerview Stud!

Matador Man flew home under Lyle Hewitson on a very hot and humid Wednesday at Greyville to give the South African Champion Jockey and Apprentice Jockey his third win in the Christmas Handicap, now a Listed race.

The son of Toreador’s previous visit to Greyville must be scratched as he found traffic and didnt take his customary outside run, instead getting blocked on in the inside under Anton Marcus.

Out of the speedy Sahara by Mogok, who sold to Summerview Stud from Scott Bros at their Dispersal Sale for R170 000 and is now in foal to Master Of My Fate, Matador Man trained by Sean Tarry has earned over R1,3-million in stakes – a tidy return for his connections after his purchase at the 2015 National 2YO Sale for R180 000.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-8963" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/CAN_3035-300x200.jpg" alt="Lyle Hewitson after his win on Matador Man. Image: Candiese Marnewick

This is his second Stakes win – the first being the Secretariat Listed in 2016. Matador Man, voted KZN Breeders Middle Distance Champion now for two years in a row, enjoys the Greyville course when things go his way – he is a winner of the KZN Breeders Million Mile and ran third in the Gr1 Champions Cup.

He has previously achieved under Hewitson, and finished third in the Gr2 Greyville 1900 in May.

By Toreador, who stood at Bush Hill Stud prior to his passing, the connections of Matador Man have enjoyed success with the deceased son of Danehill – winning two Gr1’s with Bull Valley (by Toreador). Breeder of Matador Man, Robin Scott, retained a share and owns him along with Messrs G D Tooch, G L Blank, G J Nassif, J Nassif, Z L Nassif and J Sarkis.

Matador Man’s weanling full sister sold for R125 000 at the Scott Bros Dispersal sale, an impressive filly with plenty of strength and substance.

Matador Man would have earned his breeders a Breeder Premium claim of approximately R6 000.

The KZN Breeders Race Day final fields have been announced, with Matador Man now heading up the Million Mile field and in the final field for the Vodacom Durban July. The son of Toreador is bred by Scott Bros and Robin Scott has retained a share in the gelding.

On the afternoon of his announcement at the Vodacom Durban July Final Field and Draw announcement yesterday, his 2yo Crusade half-sister won on debut for Sean Tarry.

Their dam Sahara by Mogok is proving herself at stud and should be a serious prospect for breeders at the Scott Bros Dispersal Sale, taking place 17 July, with her first four runners all winners.

Matador Man Gr1 placed behind Marinaresco in the Champions Cup and recently behind Elusive Silva in the Gr2 1900, is also a winner of the Storm Bird Stakes Listed.

He will be looking to emulate No Worries when he lines up for the Million Mile on Saturday to try and make it two wins in a row and he comes up against Dawn Calling once again. Interestingly, his year younger Crusade half-brother is also an entry in the Million Mile – 2-time winner Subtropical, owned by the Burnards who had great success with No Worries.

The four-year-old Toreador gelding Matador Man, an entry for the R4.25-million Vodacom Durban July, has thrown his tab into the hat to defend his title in the R1-milion KZN Breeders Million Mile to be run at Greyville in Durban on June 30, just a week before the country’s premier event.

Out of the Mogok mare Sahara and bred at one of South Africa’s leading studs in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, Scott Bros, Matador Man is trained by reigning champion trainer Sean Tarry and holds the class record for the mile of 94.1 secs at Greyville which he set when winning this race last year.

The four-year-old, that features in the top 20 on the latest July Log and could well be included in the final big race field, is one of 14 KwaZulu-Natal-bred entries for the Million Mile event that heads the annual KZN Breeders meeting that includes seven other non-black type races that each carry a stake of R200 000 and cater for horses that qualify over distance from 1 200m to 1 900m.

Having run third behind Elusive Silva in the World Sports Betting 1900 in his last outing and beating home another July entry Glider Pilot over a mile at Turffontein before that, the Tarry stable inmate will be strongly fancied to complete the race double if he stands his ground.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-large wp-image-6488" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/MG_9544-lot93-gliderpilot-1024x554.jpg" alt="Glider Pilot at the Ready To Run Gallops - the grey is a son of AP Arrow and a half-brother to last years Gr1 winner, Rabada.
Glider Pilot, from the Tyrone Zackey stable, is also among the entries and comes off a moderate run behind Yakeen in the Jubilee Handicap last weekend.

Highveld trainer Gary Alexander has entered two runners, his Kahal sprinter Champagne Haze and the Admire Main gelding Unagi that ran a super third behind Legal Eagle in the Horse Chestnut Stakes at Turffontein and another third placing over a mile on the inside Turffontein track last time out.

The KZN Breeders stage the meeting each year with a total stakes pot of R2.5-million as well as the R1-million, KZN Yearling Sale Million race on Vodacom Durban July Day, giving back to supporters of the industry in the province.

Racegoers are always encouraged to wear outfits of black and white on the day to show their support for the thoroughbred breeders in the province.

Matador Man, who won last year’s KZN Breeders Million Mile over 1600m at Greyville from Dawn Calling, is coming along the right way for a defence of his title.

Trainer Sean Tarry will be aiming the son of Toreador at the same race this year and following the four-year-old’s convincing win under top weight in a Progress Plate over 1600m at Turffontein on Saturday, his owners will have a good degree of confidence.

Tarry told Turf Talk: “He wasn’t too far back in the race and won well in what looked like quite a solid field. The addition of blinkers also seems to have made a difference.”

Matador Man, by Toreador, was bred by the Scott Brothers from the mare Sahara, by Mogok.

The stable of Paul Peter stunned with a winning double from his raiders, including the Arc-En-Ciel bred Fort Ember – a grand-daughter of Kahal who took home the Gr2 Gold Bracelet from favourite Nightingale by two lengths. Other KZN horses to impress was Scott Bros’ Matador Man who ran a phenomenal third in the Gr1 Champions Cup, after not jumping out the stalls on terms and trailing by four or five lengths. His Crusade half-brother Subtropical also caused a stir when the handsome colt won the second race of the day – giving Crusade his seventh winner of the season (six in South Africa).

The day started off with Subtropical in Race 2 winning in the Burnard colours of the famous red, white and blue “V” silks, in partnership with breeder Robin Scott of Scott Bros. It is the first Crusade to have won that is raced by his breeder.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-6860" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/IMG_3008-subtropical.jpg" alt="Subtropical (closest) wins for Brian Burnard and Robin Scott.
The half-brother to Gr1 placed Matador Man flew up to the finish over 1600m, with a Middlefield-bred Byword finishing third and First Crusade, under star jockey Anthony Delpech, finishing fourth.

This is the seventh winner for Gr1 Middle Park Stakes winner Crusade (sixth in South Africa with Black Type Butchie Boy winning in Zimbabwe) for the season.

Subtropical’s dam Sahara (by Mogok) is proving herself to be a broodmare of note – producing three runners and three winners – Desert Fighter, his full brother Matador Man and Subtropical.

A smashing full sister by Crusade to Subtropical sold to the Tawny Syndicate in May at the National Yearling Sale for R200 000 – who have links to Matador Man (by Toreador).

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-6862" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/IMG_4043-matadorman1.jpg" alt="Matador Man looking a picture in the Gr1 Champions Cup parade ring. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Sahara herself raced for Dennis Drier, a speedy four-time winner who placed second in multiple Gr2 and Gr3 races. Robin Scott has always been adamant that the impeccably bred Mogok, who has produced four Gr1 winners – two of those in America – will be a broodmare sire in future to be reckoned with. Sahara’s four yearlings that have sold at sales have averaged an impressive R202 500 each.

After the running of the Darley Arabian (Listed), where AP Answer’s Cutting Edge finished third behind Maximizer for owner Alesh Naidoo and KZN stalwart No Worries in fourth for the Burnards, the Sean Tarry-trained Matador Man impressed with a third in a very strong Gr1 winning field of the Champions Cup.

Slow out of the stalls when the gates crashed open, Secretariat Listed and Million Mile winner Matador Man lost approximately five lengths at the start, under a clever ride from S’manga Khumalo the Toreador gelding quickly caught up to the pack.

Matador Man flew up to finish in third in front of multiple Gr1 winner Bela-Bela and just two lengths off the winner Sail South and Gr1 Gold Challenge winner Captain America, leaving the likes of Gr1 Vodacom Durban July winner Marinaresco and Gr2 winner Ten Gun Salute in his wake.

We can look forward to much more to come from the son of Toreador in the future – partly owned by breeder Robin Scott, along with the owners of dual Gr1 winner Bull Valley (by Toreador).

Bush Hill resident sire Toreador has had a sparkling season indeed, with two Gr1 wins from son Bull Valley.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-6863" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/lot149-saharafilly.jpg" alt="The outstanding full sister to Subtropical by Crusade, and the half-sister to Matador Man, sold for R200 000 at the 2017 National Yearling Sale.
The Gr2 Gold Bracelet was won by a grand daughter of Kahal, Fort Ember, in a double for the raiding Paul Peter stable.

Going off at 16/1, Fort Ember beat Nightingale by almost two lengths with KZN-bred Gr3 winner, the beautifully-bred Summerhill-bred Witchcraft by Kahal, finishing in third for the Sean Tarry stable just two lengths off.

Witchcraft carries an impeccable pedigree; out of a Kingmambo mare Deceptive Charm – in turn out of a Sadlers Wells / Mill Reef mare.

Her third dam, Gr2 winner Fleur Royale, was the 4th Top Rated 3-y-o filly in Ireland in 1986. The female line has produced sires Levmoss, Ascot Gold Cup winner Le Moss and South African champions Mosszao and Autumn Lodge.

Day two of the Gold Cup festival continues today, with a number of Graded Stakes races on the cards. Congratulations to all concerned above.

See you at Greyville!

The following KZN-bred horses consigned to the National 2YO Sale, taking place next month from 17-18 August at the TBA Complex, (except for those highlighted in bold italics which are not registered), are registered with the KZN Breeders Premium Scheme and therefore qualify for the added incentive of running on KZN Breeders Race Day including the Million Mile – a day that sees R2,6 million up for grabs for the winning and placed connections.

Bloodstock South Africa are also offering a lucrative ‘carrot’ for buyers, with 2017 sales graduates grabbing an additional R40 000 in stakes when winning their Maiden Juvenile Plate.

The National 2YO Sale has produced amongst others KZN-breds Gr1 winner and Equus Champion Sprinter Talktothestars, as well as the recent Million Mile winner, Gr1 aimed Matador Man and international globe-trotting multiple Group Winner The Apache who was famously purchased for R80 000 and earned in excess of R17 million – all three horses mentioned bred by Scott Bros. The Apache is represented on this sale by four 2YO’s consigned by Rosedene Stud.

First season sires represented include Redoute’s Promise from Bush Hill Stud – the first son of Australian super sire Redoute’s Choice to retire to stud in South Africa.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-6852" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/IMG_5207-lot73-talktothestars.jpg" alt="Another that got away!
His first and only yearling sold this year for R110 000 to John Freeman at the KZN Yearling Sale. He has seven 2YO’s available at this auction, including a Bush Hill-bred half-brother to 3-time winner, Big Si, as Lot 323. Piemonte consign Aldo (Lot 242), a half-brother to the smart juvenile Toreador colt Filippo out of Var speed queen Wishful Eye – a filly that beat Val De Ra. Filippo has won and placed from three of his four starts.

The other to attract attention is of course Noble Tune – the leading freshman sire of the KZN Yearling Sale and selling for a top price at Nationals of R350 000, he has four horses on offer including a Piemonte-bred half-sister (Lot 284 Abelie) to six-time winner Amazing Strike, the latter also Gr2 placed. Noble Tune impressed at the May National Yearling Sale, selling six yearlings for an impressive average of R223 000 each.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-6176" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Redoutes-Promise-Candiese-Marnewick-300x216.jpg" alt="Redoute's Promise sold his first yearling for R110 000 to John Freeman at the KZN Yearling Sale.
Others to turn heads will be the ever consistent Toreador – who has produced dual Gr1 winner Bull Valley this season. Getting Black Type in almost every single one of his crops at stud, Toreador who stands at Bush Hill Stud will have four two year olds on offer.

Spring Valley bring a Toreador colt Galinga (Lot 401) a first foal for a half-sister to Gr1 winner, Exhilaration. This is the immediate family of the brilliant Wendywood, Malteme, Bezanova and Gr1 Vodacom Durban July winner, Power King.

Amongst the Black Type producing mares, Lots 18 Playhouse Mouse, Lot 23 Born A Bully and Lot 366 Sweet Empress attract attention.

Lot 18 from Bush Hill Stud is a Curved Ball half-brother to Gr2 winner The Mouseketeer, Lt Jerry Mouse and Weiho Marwing’s 5-time winner, Aramouse.

KZN-breds will be easily identified by stable door posters and KZN hip stickers in the auction ring.

The sale takes place 17-18 August at the TBA Complex:

The Scott Bros’ had great weekend with Matador Man winning the Secretariat Stakes Listed at Turffontein on Saturday, whilst their gelding by The Sheik – Road To Dubai – won the Borrowdale Cup Sprint Listed over 1200m. It was a KZN-bred dominated race, with the first four crossing the line all produced locally.

Promising apprentice Lyle Hewitson booted home his second Tarry winner at Turffontein when Matador Man won the R150 000 Listed Secretariat Stakes.

Stepped up to the 1400m after his recent Vaal 1200m maiden success at his third start, Matador Man was easy to back, but won like a horse with a future.

Hewitson produced Matador Man down the inside to hold his stablemate Tilbury Fort to 1,75 lengths in a time of 85,08 secs.

The Scott Bros bred Matador Man is by Toreador out of the four-time winning Mogok mare, Sahara. His lightly raced full brother Desert Fighter has won three times for Dennis Drier.

Matador Man was signed for by the Tawny Syndicate at R180 000 at the 2015 National 2yo Sale and has now won two races with two places from four starts for stakes of R177 000. He also benefitted from the BSA Added Value Stakes Bonus of R77 500.

Toreador also had a win at Scottsville with Roski Stud’s Roy’s Marciano, a good looking half-brother to Gr2 placed and Dubai winner Journeyman. He took home his fourth win for owner Roy Moodley and trainer Kom Naidoo.

Toreador enjoys regular success in the winners circle and stood for a fee of R20 000 at Bush Hill Stud this past season. The consistent son of Toreador is certainly an asset to breeding in the KZN stallion ranks.

The Sheik at Scott Bros, had a 1st and 3rd in the Borrowdale Gold Cup Sprint. Image: Candiese Marnewick

Five year old Road To Dubai has now won the race twice in a row for trainer Kirk Swanson and owner Mr J Koumides.

Another by The Sheik finished third in the same race, with speedy Sheik’s Brashee crossing the line in third place. Other KZN-breds to fill the second and fourth places were Bush Hill’s Newton Power in second, and Kahal’s Commanche Brave in fourth.

The Sheik, a top sprinter in his day by Al Mufti, stands at Scott Bros and his progeny are available at sales each year.

In additon, Talktothestars owner and trainer Coenie De Beer achieved a double at Turffontein with two others from Highdown Stud, including Talktothestars full sister, Lady Starlett and Gold Shades. It is the third win each for Lady Starlett and Gold Shades, the latter a half-brother to Light The Way.
