Piemonte Stud mare Wishful Eye had two winners this week in KZN, with Faustino (Crusade) winning on Sunday at Hollywoodbets Scottsville, and the courageous Filippo winning for the 9th time under the care of trainer Yogas Govender at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Wednesday.

Wishful Eye, a Var filly bred by Middlefield Stud and from the family of Tetre Rouge, is a three time winner including the Listed In Full Flight Handicap, and ran a close second to the famed Val De Ra in the Kwazulu Natal Listed at Clairwood. Wishful Eye has produced four winners at stud to date.

Piemonte Stud presented a very exciting filly half-sister to the aforementioned geldings, to the BSA Inspectors for the Nationals in January. She is a beautiful specimen by leading sire Vercingetorix – look out for her in the catalogues this year!

Filippo is a 7yo by Toreador and doesn’t look to be stopping anytime soon. Owned by Messrs P Rambaras, Y Naidoo & Mr J & Mrs N Deokynarain, the gelding relishes 1000m sprints. He sold for R230 000 off the KZN Yearling Sale.

Three year old Faustino has won three races all over 1000m for trainer Kom Naidoo, owned by Messrs Kenny K Govender, E C Abraham, Rajan Naidoo, Mesdames D Jithoo & Trinisha Pillay. Sold for R220 000 off the National 2YO Sale, he was given a fantastic ride by Kaiden Brewer to win by over a length.

In a wintery but pleasant day at Yellow Star Stud, the KZN Mare & Weanling Sale took place on Monday in Mooi River, with support from farms outside of KZN such as Gary Player Stud, Riethuiskraal and John Slade.

The top priced Lots of the day came from two fillies consigned for stud – Lot 51 Eurythmics sold for R150 000 from Rathmor Stud to Boland Stud from the family of Dubai winner Heavy Metal (GB) and Cue The Music, whilst the beautiful grey multiple winner Mulher De Branco, a Visionaire half-sister to No Worries, sold for the sales topping R160 000 to Riethuiskraal Stud from the Bass racing stable as agents.

The top selling weanling was Lot 118 by Oratorio out of an imported Selkirk mare, who sold for R45 000 from Backworth to Piemonte Stud. The dam has produced four winners to date, including a 3-time winner by Pivotal.

The second highest was a well grown Flying The Flag filly from St Helier Stud, sold for R20 000 to Spring Valley Stud. The filly out of Harolds Gold is a half-sister to six winners, including the Silvano 4-time winner Hallowed. Their dam is a full sister to Cover Look. 

In a very challenging market, 53 Lots sold for an average of R16 320.75.

A daughter of four time Gr1 winner and 2000 Guineas winner Henrythenavingator in foal to Dynasty topped the charts at the CTS Mares, Weanlings & Fillies for stud Select Sale held at Highlands on Friday, purchased by Rathmor Stud.

The broodmare named Allmosthaditall (USA) sold as Lot 15, a winner in Ireland with a previous foal by Rock Of Gibraltar in 2015.

She is out of a Storm Cat / Mr Prospector mare, from the damline of Gr1 winner Mastery and sire Miswaki.

Henrythenavigator is sire of recent Betting World 1900 winner Ten Gun Salute and his winning daughter Ialmosthaditall is a half-sister to Gr2 winner and successful US sire Jump Start and to the dam of retired and undefeated Gr1 winner Mastery.

She was purchased for R2,4 million by Rathmor Stud, who were the top buyers with their 3 lots averaging R1 183 333 for an aggregate of R3 550 000.

Rathmor also purchased Fastnet Rock mare as Lot 68, Mile High (GB) for R900 000, out of a Sadlers Wells mare.

She is carrying her second foal to Silvano with her yearling being by Camelot.

She hails from the immediate damline of sire Barathea.

Rathmor have bolstered their broodmare band significantly since the purchase of Noble Tune and their acquisitions have paid off with superb results at the recent National Yearling Sale, where Rathmor averaged over R500 000 per yearling sold – the top price R1,7million for a Dynasty colt.

Noble Tune’s first crop are yearlings and the regally bred stallion will be on display to the public once more at Rathmor’s stallion day, taking place 2 July at 12pm.

Noble Tune’s highest price at Nationals was R350 000 for an outstanding colt consigned by Piemonte Stud.

Summerhill Stud: Sale of Mares and Weanlings

Ever since they announced their intention to reduce their numbers, there has been much speculation as to when and what form the Summerhill sale of breeding stock would take. It’s now official: the sale will be held on Sunday, 14^th May in the School Of Excellence at the farm.

In his statement this morning, Business Manager, Ferdi Heinen said that in his recollection, there had not been a sale of this depth and quality in twenty years, when the two July heroines Devon Air and Tecla Bluff, as well as the dams of Jet Master, Royal Chalice, Promisefrommyheart and Covenant were sold at Summerhill.

“The timing of the sale represents a convergence between the maturation of our old partnerships which in some cases date back 30 years, and the owner’s intention to make space for their other projects. Clearly in this day and age, it is a rare opportunity to acquire the stock of a farm that has been at the head of the national breeding scene for much of the first two decades of the new century.”

According to Bloodstock Manager Tarryn Liebenberg, the catalogue of 106 mares includes 40 Black-type winners, performers or Stakes producers and 74 siblings to Stakes horses. And for the first time in years, there is a weanling entry of 80.

“Out of respect to our good friends at Backworth Stud, the catalogue will only be published online after their sale next week. We’ll keep the public informed in that regard”, added Heinen.

The KZN Mare, Weanling, HIT, Yearlings and Fillies For Stud Sale took place on 4 July at the Royal Agricultural Show grounds and saw 50 horses catalogued.

The mare prices were topped with Spring Valley’s dam of 8-time winner including a Gr3 Kinematic Countess – National Navigator – sold for R100 000 in foal to Capetown Noir. The daughter of National Emblem out of a Rocky Marriage/Lords mare has produced four winners to date from five foals, and descends from the damline of Yentl and Oliver Twist.

The second highest went to a lovely chestnut mare consigned by Clifton Stud – a daughter of Tiger Ridge named Queen Kastanea, in foal to Irish Flame (by Dynasty) sold for R90 000 to Summerhill Stud. Her dam is a half-sister to the dam of Futura and she would make a great addition to the book of new Dynasty sire, Act Of War, standing at Summerhill Stud.

The third mare to make an impression was Dreams And Fancies, from the famous dynasty of Spring Valley Stud that produced Silver Flyer, Malinga and Indiscreet Fantasy. The daughter of Fort Wood out of Fancy Fantasy, the dam of Indiscreet Fantasy, sold for R70 000. She is in foal to the very exciting Noble Tune.

The top priced yearling was for an eyecatching AP Answer colt named Business Jet, out of Just Jettin’ Along, knocked down for R37 000. His dam is closely related to Madame Dubois. Two weanlings each sold for R30 000 – one by Toreador out of Blushing Polly by Jallad from the family of Flaming Reality and Green Crest, and the other out of Secret Babe from Clifton Stud. This is the mare’s second produce.
