Noble Tune, already responsible for five first crop runners to have won or finished in the money, was a top class racehorse who won the G3 Pilgrim Stakes at two, and the G2 American Turf Stakes at three.

He is one of more than 100 stakes winners sired by multiple G1 winner Unbridled’s Song whose numerous stars include such Breeders’ Cup winners as Arrogate, Forever Unbridled, Liam’s Map, Midshipman, Unrivalled Belle, and Unbridled Elaine.

The regally bred Noble Tune is out of four stakes horses produced by Storm Cat’s stakes winning daughter Serena’s Cat, a granddaughter of US champion and Hall Of Fame member Serena’s Song. Noble Tune’s siblings include US Champion Older Dirt Male and multiple G1 winner Honor Code –who is currently standing in Kentucky at Lane’s End Farm.

First of the Kjell pair on offer is Praise Singer (Lot 500), a colt by Noble Tune. This bay, a half-brother to 2 winners, is out of a 3 time winning ¾ sister to G1 Premier’s Champion Stakes winner Fez and half-sister to the top class broodmare Salaam. The latter produced the high class, Kjell bred siblings Eastern Greeting, Kwinta and Kalaam.

Kjell Foundation are also offering Sweet Chariot (Lot 523), a daughter of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner up Noble Tune. This filly is a half-sister to five winners, notably the stakes placed winner of six, Symbolik, and her dam is a half-sister to G1 Golden Slipper winner Gilded Minaret.

This well bred filly is from the same family as former champion racemare, and Durban July third, Dollar Fortune, as well as high class galloper Kangaroo Jack.

The lightly raced Wynkelder has now won three of his eight starts and placed three times.

Merit Rated at 86, he has won R269 600 in stakes – a good return on his purchase price of R100 000 at the National Yearling Sale. He is a full brother to 4-time winner Kanonkop.

Keep a look out for their Mogok half-sister, Marsanne, who is in training with Duncan Howells.

In other Scottsville news, the first Maiden Juvenile Plate took place at Scottsville yesterday in an 800m dash.

The finish saw juveniles by Crusade and the first by Noble Tune finish 2nd and 3rd, hot on the heels of the winner less than half a length off. Exciting times ahead indeed!

Kjell Foundation have enjoyed brilliant success from their small band of Thoroughbred mares, and Al Vino looks to be another mare to potentially fill the shoes of the late and great Salaam – the type of broodmare that comes along once in a lifetime and can almost visit the stable teaser to produce a Group winner.

Who could forget the finish in the Gr2 Camellia Stakes with the two full sisters – Eastern Greeting and Kalaam – challenging each other to the 1160m finish at Turffontein, where they almost dead heated to finish a nose apart for the same trainer and the same connections – an incredible feat indeed!

Breeder Mike Benson of the Kjell Foundation with Al Vino.

Kwinta is another full sibling, the Gr3 winner taking home the KZN Breeders Awards in 2016 for Outstanding Older Female and Outstanding Sprinter. Needless to say, with such outstanding records the fillies have found themselves snapped up by some of the leading Thoroughbred nurseries in the country for stud duties.

Michael Benson has always been a big fan of Kahal and enjoyed immense success with the son of Machiavellian, commenting that Kahal was a vastly underestimated stallion and one of the countries best.

Al Vino, bred herself by the Kjell Foundation has followed suit – the beautiful bay mare has produced two foals and two winners, and in December her colts won within a day of each other – the younger of the two, Wynkelder, doing so impressively on debut.

An imposing chestnut, her eldest son Kanonkop (named after a local vineyard) is a big strapping four year old who has secured his fifth recent career victory for Stanley Ferreira, and has placed four times.

From sixteen starts he has only missed a cheque four times for his owners – his breeder Mr Mike Benson and Mrs D E Turner. His last win came at the Vaal at odds of 20/1 on 22 December over 2400m, winning by a neck under Andrew Fortune and beating a well-bred field of horses.

On 21 December, Wynkelder stepped onto the Scottsville race track for the first time.

Purchased for R100 000 at the 2015 National Yearling sale, the aptly named Wynkelder is in training with Tony Rivalland and the three year old gelding won over the 1400m clear by almost a length and a half for his owners Messrs G N Cumming, Clint Larsson, A S Potts, trainer Tony Rivalland and Mrs Mary Liley, at massive odds of 50/1. Wynkelder will definitely be one to add to the watch list for the future.

Al Vino won three times at the track and placed eight times. Her dam line is brimming with Black Type down the page, her first dam producing six runners and six winners – three of them Black Type; in turn her progeny went on to produce the likes of Yer-Maan, Nordic Breeze, Ice Wine and Rushing Wind.

Al Vino is out of Montrachet by Foveros, in turn out of a Prince Tor mare Sauturne and the rest of the pedigree page includes Sweet Seduction, Noble Century and Captain’s Gal to name but a few.

After the untimely passing of the ultra consistent Kahal, Al Vino was sent to Mogok (a half-brother to Machiavellian by Storm Cat and the sire of American Gr1 winners The Apache and Gypsy’s Warning) and a 2015 filly, Marsanne, will be coming through.

Al Vino is back in foal this year to Bush Hill Stud’s very exciting young son of Galileo, Flying The Flag.

The nominees for the KZN Breeders Awards to be held on 26 November 2016 have been announced, with our Equus National Champion Breeders Summerhill Stud dominating the various categories with 14 nominations, amongst them the likes of Rabada, No Worries, Heaps Of Fun, Intergalactic, Witchcraft and Arch Rival.

Scott Bros follow suit with their brilliant and consistent Gr1 winner Talktothestars, voted Equus Champion Sprinter. Others representing the Scotts Highdown Stud include Gr1 placed Judicial, Pennington Sands, whilst Mayesh Chetty’s two year old colt Oversure is by Mogok.

Ken and Lynne Twort of Barton Hall Stud have their dual Gr3 winning Mullins Bay gelding Viking Hero in two categories, for Outstanding Sprinter Male and Outstanding Older Male. Bush Hill Stud have their born and raised chestnut gelding by King’s Chapel, the ever consistent Malak El Moolook selected for his breeder Mr R Hanna.

The late (and great) Greg Royden-Turner of Roski Stud has his outstanding Western Winter filly Frosty Friday selected for Outstanding 3Yo Filly, and Roski are regular visitors to the winners enclosure from small numbers, reflecting Greg’s passion for the breed and his careful pedigree selections.

Mike Benson of Kjell Foundation will be delighted as the full sister to multiple Graded Stakes winners in Eastern Greeting and Kalaam, have their full sister Kwinta nominated for Outstanding Older Female and Outstanding Sprinter Female.

A hearty congratulations to Lee and Dino Scribante of Piemonte Stud, who have their outstanding Argonaut filly selected for Outstanding 2YO Filly – O Tamara. Already a winner at the Eastern Cape Racing Awards, the grand-daughter of Spectrum flies the flag at the Awards and it is pleasing to see the immediate success from the young farm of Piemonte, which finished at an impressive winners to runners percentage of 40% for the 2015 season.

Rathmor Stud’s blue hen and a previous recipient of the KZN Breeders Broodmare Of The Year award, Gypsy Queen’s Kahal gelding Romany Prince has been nominated in the category of Outstanding 3YO Colt. The great daughter of Royal Chalice put Rathmor Stud on the map, producing American and South African Gr1 winner Gypsy’s Warning and Gr2 winner Surabi, the dam of Sundari. Gypsy Queen will foal to Noble Tune this season, a very exciting mating indeed.

Last but not least, an outstanding achievement for Anton and Judy Procter who have three horses nominated this year, from a small number of elite mares at stud. Their speedy grey Toreador colt Misty Birnam has been selected for Outstanding 2YO Colt, whilst KZN Racing Award winner Dawn Calling from the Duncan Howells Racing Stable has been nominated for Outstanding 2YO Filly. Previous KZN Breeders Award winner by Ideal World, Patchit Up Baby has once again been nominated for Outstanding Older Female and Outstanding Middle Distance Female.

The KZN Breeders Awards will take place at the beautiful venue of Bellwood Stud on 26 November.

It was a 1-2 past the winning post for Kahal as the Kjell-Foundation-bred Symbolik won the Fairview Mile for the stable of Dorrie Sham, whilst his Stakes winning paternal half-brother Distinguished finished a close second.

Symbolik wins Fairview Mile from Distinguished, both by Kahal.
The Shams have become major players on the Port Elizabeth circuit and pulled a nice win out of the bag in the R100 000 Fairview Mile with the 5yo Kahal gelding Symbolik finding his best form under Sandile Khathi. It was a 1-2 past the winning post for Kahal as his Stakes winning son Distinguished owned by Marcus Jooste and now trained by Tara Laing, finished in second place less then a length off.

With topweighted dual Cape Gr3 winner Readytogorightnow going off a 17-10 favourite, the nine horse field boasted plenty of quality.

With Distinguished and Grape Vine leading the charge at the 400m, Symbolik was poised in the shadows and was climbing all over the front pair.

And Sandile Khathi’s body language suggested he knew he had it in the bag at the 200m marker already, and the gelding cruised past Distinguished to win by 0,75 lengths in a time of 96,04 secs.

Kahal at Bush Hill Stud in 2013.

The Kjell Foundation bred Symbolik is a 5yo gelded son of Kahal out of the unraced National Emblem mare, Protea.

He was formerly based in Gauteng with Johan Janse van Vuuren, where he left as a one-time winner at the end of 2014. He has now won five further races in Port Elizabeth.

Symbolik has won six times in total from 28 starts with 10 places and took his stakes to R417 325.

The Kjell Foundation has had plenty of success with the progeny of Kahal, in particular the full sisters’ Eastern Greeting, Kalaam, Khonza and Kwinta – whilst their other winners by Kahal include Katch, Kanonkop, Klondike Creek and Koncealed.

Kahal’s last crop of yearlings will be available this year. He has maintained his position of 5th on the National Sires Log with a runners to winners percentage of 37.2% for the season.

KZN-bred Kwinta, a lovely big daughter of Kahal bred by the Kjell Foundation followed in her full sister’s footsteps to add more Bold Black Type for her dam Salaam who has nicked beautifully to Kahal, now producing three Stakes Winners – all full-sisters, all owned by Mrs L C A Bouwer and all trained by Stan Ferriera.

Another full-sister Khonza, purchased by Maine Chance Farms is a winner and has placed from only four starts.

The Sansui Summer Cup day feature programme got off to a thrilling start, with just 1,30 lengths covering the first four runners home in this fillies and mares speed handicap.

Fourteen ladies lined up in the quest for the all important booster of black type over the Turffontein 1160m, with many punters siding with Mike De Kock’s Captain Al flyer Perfumed Lady who went off at 15-10.

Kwinta had not been ignored and there was plenty of support for her as she jumped at 9-2.

As expected the heat was turned on full blast from the jump with Kwinta always in the firing lane down the outside, as she led Jo Malone and Lumya with Perfumed Lady looking lost down the inside.

Into the final 300m it was anybody’s race but Kwinta rallied impressively under a powerful ride by Marco Van Rensburg to win by a head in a time of 66,54 secs.

She outgunned her more fancied stablemate Winter Star, who could do no better than 3,60 lengths off.

The Zaki speedster Lumya by Toreador was always there and looked dangerous for 95% of the journey – she was shaded late for fourth.

Kwinta is a full sister to two solid sprinters in the stakes winning Eastern Greeting and Kalaam – both were also trained by the experienced Stan Ferreira, and won seven races between them. In an interesting event, Eastern Greeting won the Gr2 Camellia Stakes just a nose from her older full sister Kalaam, who attempted the race twice and finished second in both starts.

The mare Salaam is by Northern Guest out of a Salaadim mare, Salaadim’s Pride, a grand daughter of Hobnob. Salaam is a half-sister to Gr1 Premier’s Champion Stakes winner Fez and a full-sister to Stakes Winners Red Crescent and Game View.

The consistent Kwinta has won four of her nine starts, with four places registered – and gross stakes of R388 375 in the bank.

Congratulations to Mike Benson and Mrs L C A Bouwer of the Kjell Foundation and all concerned!
