Kahal as a broodmare sire has won a Gr1 and a Gr2 in the space of a week in two different provinces, as the broodmare sire of Ambiance-bred Royal Victory and Kwinta’s Light bred by Syrilla Stud.

The deceased son of Machiavellian out of a Green Desert mare, who stood at Summerhill Stud for much of his career prior to his transfer to Bush Hill Stud, saw his handsome grandson take the Gr1 Betway Summer Cup a week at Turffontein, followed up with Justin Snaith’s beautifully bred Kwinta’s Light, taking the Gr2 WSB Southern Cross Stakes.

Kwinta’s Light is by Gimmethegreenlight and races in the colours of Maine Chance Farms.

It was a double at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth for the Shadwell Stud-owned Kahal, has his tall leggy grand-daughter won Race 4, out of mare Cousin Annie.

Kwinta’s Light is out of Kwinta, an own sister to Eastern Greeting and Kalaam – all bred by KZN breeders Kjell Foundation’s Benson family based in Karkloof.

All of the aforementioned mares are resident as broodmares in the Cape.

Kwint’s Light, out of a #kznbred Kahal mare adds another Group winner in a week for Kahal.
Kahal also happens to have come full circle in KZN, as Blue Sky Thoroughbreds Chimichuri Run is out of Gr1 winner Spiced Gold, by Kahal. ‘Chimi’ as he is affectionately known has his first foals on the ground this season and they are the spitting image of their sire, with powerful hindquarters and quality heads.

Excluding Saturdays Hollywoodbets Kenilworth results which have been updated as of yet, Kahal is on 31% winners produced for the season and over R5,7-million in stakes earned.

Gr1 Betway Summer Cup winner, Royal Victory out of a Kahal mare.
Clifton-bred Mrs Geriatrix came with a pedigree and the Vercingetorix filly sold to the Magical Lady Syndicate, nominee Natalie Turner of the Racing Association, for R200 000 at April’s National Yearling Sale.

A plain chestnut filly – a feature that runs in the family with a strong likeness to her dam’s star siblings Prince Of Kahal and Fort Vogue and holds her in good stead for the future, won on race debut for the stable of Sean Tarry at the Vaal Classic this week. She is out of Kahal mare Velvet Glove.

Mrs Geriatrix won by half a length over the 800m dash for juveniles under Calvin Habib, and in the process took home the BSA Bonus of R100 000 for her winning connections.

“She’ll be catching the first float to Wartburg.”

That’s how part-owner Mick Goss officially confirmed the retirement of the ‘Iron Lady’ of the South African turf, Rouge Allure, who is our Sprint cover star this week.

Rouge Allure (Gavin Lerena) is led by Stephen Moffatt and his son, Anthony Moffatt (Pic – JC Photos)

A firm favourite on the Gauteng circuit, the nine-year-old veteran closed out her racing career this past weekend with a fine third at Turffontein in what was her 102nd career start. Remarkably, her swan song was preceded by two wins.

In an age where the majority of female runners generally bid the track farewell at age five, maybe six, at a push, Rouge Allure has defied the benchmark. In fact, she only became a stakes winner at age eight when she captured the Listed Jacaranda Handicap on what was her 95th career start!

That this tough-as-teak mare has withstood the rigours of the racetrack can be attributed to her soundness, according to Mick.

“She’s a very, very good-legged mare,” he remarked. ” She’s a good specimen, with a bit more quality than the average Kahal.”

He makes no secret of the fact that he planned to retire Rouge Allure at the end of her four-year-old season, at which stage she had a more than respectable six wins to her name.

However, Mick was outvoted by his partner Albert Rapp, and he was right, Rouge Allure went on to score nine times more and retires a winner of 15 races and close on R1.4 million in stakes earnings.

All credit to Stephen Moffatt, who had the privilege of training the chestnut for her entire career.

The last stakes winner sired by top KZN stallion Kahal, Rouge Allure hails from a female family nurtured at the revered Juddmonte Farms. She is the best foal out of the Pivotal mare Mekyaas, whose dam Land Ahead, is a Juddmonte-bred half-sister to American Gr1 winner Contredance and to Gr2 winner Skimble, the dam of dual Gr1 winner Skimming.

While many breeders will frown at her retirement age, history shows that it’s not uncommon for a hard-raced mare to become a successful broodmare.

One who immediately comes to mind is Jet Master’s exemplary daughter River Jetez. A Gr1 winner of the J&B Met, the own sister to Pocket Power successfully traversed the globe before retiring to stud, having won 12 of 42 starts. She dropped her first foal at age 10, which turned out to be the Azzie-trained Gr1 Computaform Sprint hero Rivarine, who proved himself to be as tough as his dam and was still winning at the age of seven. River Jetez subsequently produced his full sister Delta Queen, a winner of the Gr3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery.

Anthony gives the star a hug (Pic – JC Photos)

Then there’s Spirit Of Eagles, the American-bred dam of champion Silvano. Another sound individual, she raced 59 times and while not particularly classy, she proved herself to be consistent, scoring 11 times. She became Germany’s Broodmare of the Year in 2001 and in addition to Silvano, produced American and German Gr1 winner Sabiango.

Where to now for Rouge Allure? She is destined for the paddocks of new KZN breeder Sandra Trethewey’s Bloomhill Stud, who is more than excited to welcome the accomplished mare.

“I am very lucky,” Sandra explained. “I bought six mares at the Summerhill dispersal sale and Mick has since become sort of my mentor. He actually phoned me in March and said to me, I have a mare for you. That was Rouge Allure.”

Sandra, who is now part-owner of Rouge Allure, added: “I could see that Albert was betwixt and between about retiring her and so I said to him, as you have such a special bond with her, why don’t we three own her together and breed from her as a team.”

As for which stallion Rouge Allure will visit first, Mick added: ” I haven’t discussed it with Sandra yet, but Got The Greenlight could be a possible first mate. Physically, she’s probably ideal for him, being a good-bodied mare with a good hindquarter on her.

“I haven’t seen her in the flesh since I sold her I think and it will be very nice to catch up and see her when she arrives. She’s been absolutely remarkable, we should all try to breed her ilk.”

One thing is sure, Gauteng racegoers will miss this venerable mare, who always gave of her best. We wish her well.

Group 1 winning mare from South Africa produced an impressive winner for Fastnet Rock and Lindsay Park at Cranbourne on Sunday and the three year old has a bright future.

Notation (Fastnet Rock), a filly out of Group 1 winning mare Chocolicious (SAF), was a 3.25 length winner of the opening race over a 1300m.

Notation is part-owned by Coolmore, a $240,000 weanling buy in 2016.

Ben Hayes, who trains the pair in partnership with his father David and cousin Tom Dabernig, was especially impressed with Notation, who had won on debut at Geelong two weeks’ ago and predicted she would step up to back-type company next time out.

“The way she won today was really, really good and it’s really exciting and we’ll probably go for black type next start now,” Hayes said.

“The way she won, she had plenty in the tank on the line. We’ll step her out to 1400m over Melbourne Cup week and she’ll be very hard to beat in that.”

Notation is the second foal from Chocolicious, who won the G1 Allan Robertson Championship at Scottsville as a 2-year-old. The first filly by Frankel (GB) sold for $610,000 as a yearling and went to South Africa, while she also has a 2-year-old by Exceed and Excel and recently foaled a full brother to Notation.

Broodmare sire Kahal, who stood at Bush Hill Stud prior to his passing, has produced a Gr3 winner in Australia as a broodmare sire through his daughter Noble Heir.

Bush Hill Stud also stand Curved Ball, the first son of Fastnet Rock to stand at stud in South Africa.

Veteran trainer Ormond Ferraris won the inaugural KZN Breeders Million Mile in 2012 with the Ivanhoe bred Knock On Wood, which raced in the colours of his son David.

On Saturday the senior statesman of the SA training ranks took the honours in the restricted feature again. This time with the Rathmor Stud-bred Romany Prince, who got the better of a thrilling Kahal exacta duel with 7yo sprinter, London Call.

The feature, the only event on the nine-race KZN Breeders Day run on the turf, produced a grandstand finish with the 5yo Gauteng raider getting the better of Mark Dixon’s top-class 7yo sprinter, who refused to go down without a fight.

The win by Romany Prince was a pleasing KZN Yearling Sale boost for Rathmor Stud, who offer Gypsy Rose (# 184) from the same family.

She is a Noble Tune daughter and half-sister to six winners, most notably to dual SA & US Gr1 winner Gypsy’s Warning.

The well endowed feature headlined the KZN Breeders annual raceday and is restricted to KZN bred 3yo’s and older registered as KwaZulu-Natal bred in terms of the Gold Circle Racing and Gaming Group Thoroughbred Breeder, Stallion and Owner Premium scheme.

The withdrawal of last year’s winner, and Vodacom Durban July hopeful, Matador Man on Thursday threw the race open. But the favourite obliged in the end.

Warren Kennedy rode a perfectly judged race after a slow start, when he got Romany Prince into a favourable position as London Call led Matador Man’s half-brother Subtropical and Unagi into the home straight.

With London Call seemingly headed for glory, Kennedy produced Romany Prince through a tight gap and the 5yo looked to sail on by. But Brandon Lerena and the hardknocking London Call had other ideas and they fought back with vigour.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-8331" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/CAN_9760-warren.jpg" alt="Warren Kennedy is all smiles as he wins the Million Mile for a second time, both on sons of Kahal.
At the line, Romany Prince held a head advantage to bank the R625 000 cheque for staunch owner Peter Dimakogiannis. He won in a time of 97 secs flat.

London Call was gallant in defeat, with Gary Alexander’s raider Unagi paying the travelling costs with a handsome R100 000 bank in third.

Subtropical stayed on for fourth, with 2017 runner-up Dawn Calling taking the final stakes slice of R25 000 for fifth.

In addition to the winning stake, the first placed connections won a voucher to the value of R20 000 towards the purchase of a KZN-bred yearling at the KZN Yearling Sale, with the second, third and fourth placed connections each getting a voucher of R10 000 towards the same. The KZN Yearling Sale takes place 5 & 6 July at Sibaya.

Trainer Frank Robinson saddled the winner for Ormond Ferraris.

“Romany Prince arrived here on Friday. He looked magnificent. Even at his age, Ormond Ferraris is still the king,” said Robinson.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-8332" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/CAN_9921-mike.jpg" alt="Mike McHardy, breeder of Romany Prince, accepts the winning trophy from KZN Breeders Chairman Bruce Le Roux.
The 2017 Gr3 London News Stakes winner, Romany Prince was bred by Rathmor Stud and is a half brother a to dual Gr1 winner Gypsy’s Warning (Mogok).

He was Ormond Ferraris’ 2500th career winner in 2016 when he won the Listed Drum Star.

A R450 000 National Yearling Sale graduate, the dark bay gelding has earned R1 381 525 with 7 wins and 10 places from 34 starts.

A son of the deceased Kahal (Machiavellian), he is out of former KZN Breeders Broodmare Of The Year Gypsy Queen (Royal Chalice), a full sister to SA Oaks winners Royal Prophecy and Noble Destiny.

Gypsy Queen, unplaced in a single start at 3, never reached the racing stardom her sisters did on the track, but has left them behind in the breeding shed. She has begun her own dynasty, with her daughters at leading stud farms countrywide and Champion breeders Varsfontein Stud stand two of her daughters – one by Jalld, the other by Fort Wood.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-8333" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/CAN_9941-mike.jpg" alt="The winning team, with Frank Robinson representing Ormond Ferraris.
They are already performing at stud globally – American and USA Gr1 winner Gypsy’s Warning, bred by Rathmor, has produced 2 foals and 2 winners – the second winning on debut very recently. The first – a Street Cry filly named Know raced in Ireland, won twice and sold to Japan as a broodmare prospect.

Gr2 Surabi by Wolfhound is off to an incredible start, producing Sundari and Gr3 placed, So Var.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-4372" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/GypsyqueenKahal2012-300x278.jpg" alt="Gypsy Queen with Romany Prince as a foal at foot.
Their half-sister by Jallad, Queen Of All, is the dam of Stakes Winner Queen Forever who is also multiple Listed Placed. Klawervlei have one of her last daughters produced at stud – the Silvano mare Judi Silvano is due to foal to Coup De Grace this year. Rathmor retained a Fort Wood daughter, Golden Earings, who foaled to Noble Tune in 2017.

Thank you to the owners and trainers who supported the KZN Breeders Race Day, as well as to our eight sponsors including the farm of the winners, Noble Tune.

It was a cross section of winning trainers on the day, with Sean Tarry taking three races, Glen Kotzen one with Trippi’s Girl, and Ormond Ferraris taking the main.

The local trainers to win were Garth Puller with his very smart Roman Dancer (by Crusade), Mark Dixon with his superb mare Isingamoya, Unbelievable Lad who gave his second win on the trot for Ivan and Darryl Moore, and Frank Robinson winning from start to finish with the aptly named Bank The Cash in the 1900.

Congratulations to Mike and Tanya McHardy of Rathmor Stud on a most deserving win in the Million Mile!

A daughter of top-class SA sprinter Noble Heir (Kahal) maintained her unbeaten record from three starts when she beat Blue Diamond Stakes winner Catchy by a head in a thrilling finish to the Gr3 Quezette Stakes run over 1100m at Caulfield on Saturday.

An elated jockey Ben Melham said that Crown Witness had an easy run on the speed. “She did a real good job, she was real game to the line. At this distance today and with one to chase she settled nice but I’ll leave it to the experts to decide if she’ll stretch out over further.”

A A$50,000 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale graduate, Crown Witness made it three straight wins on Saturday to beat a filly hailed as champion material.

Crown Witness, by Star Witness, is trained by Stuart Webb and was bred by Golden Grove Stud Farm. She is the first winner produced by the former Dennis Bosch-trained grey flyer.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-full wp-image-4181" src="https://kznbreeders.co.za/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/IMG_0342-kahal304x400.jpg" alt="Kahal at Bush Hill Stud.
The Connington Stud-bred Noble Heir won or placed in 18 of her 26 outings, with her big moment coming in the 2010 Gr1 Computaform Sprint – a race in which she won away from home beating champion sprinter Mythical Flight (Jet Master) and the Gr1 winners Warm White Night (Western Winter) and Private Jet (Orpen).[/caption]

Noble Heir is one of three winners produced by the Kilconnel mare Irish Honour.

In 2010 Noble Heir was bought by Australian multi-millionaire racehorse owner and Ultra Tune executive chairman Sean Buckley. He races and breeds under the Ultra Thoroughbreds banner.

Buckley earlier enjoyed group success with SA purchases in Perfect Promise (dam of Bush Hill sire Redoute’s Promise), a Gr1 winner in both South Africa and Australia, Battle Maiden, who was Champion three-year-old filly, Dane Julia, another dual Gr1 winner in both South Africa and New Zealand, 2008 SA Oaks winner Happy Spirit and Emblem Of Liberty, who beat Dancer’s Daughter and River Jetez to win the Gr1 Paddock Stakes.

Another Australian-bred grand daughter of Kahal is eagerly anticipated on the South African racetrack – a Mike De Kock trained daughter of Frankel out of Backworth-bred Gr1 winner Chocolicious.

The chestnut filly was purchased by Shadwell for a record at the time of the most expensive Frankel filly sold at that point, for $625 000.

Locally, Kahal has produced amongst others Gr2 Gold Bracelet winner, Fort Ember, as a broodmare sire.

Rathmor-bred Romany Prince continued the good family name of his dam with an easy win the Gr3 London News Stakes. The son of Kahal and a half- sibling to several top horses including American and South African Gr1 winner, Gypsy’s Warning, also gave Ormond Ferraris his 2500th win in 2016 when he took home the Drum Star Listed.

Well fancied at 16-10, Romany Prince was relaxed two lengths back in third as customary front-runner Stonehenge led Supreme Cup winner Deputy Jud for home.

The astute Gavin Lerena was wide awake to what was required and shook his mount up to get first run on Deo Juvente at the 300m.

A former Summer Cup runner-up, Deo Juvente looked likely to find his feet and make a battle of it, but he changed legs and took a while to catch his footing as Romany Prince galloped powerfully.

Lerena had a half length to spare at the line as he took it easy in the final strides to register Romany Prince’s biggest career win in a time of 111.82 secs.

Romany Prince as a foal with his dam.

Romany Prince sold at the National Yearling Sale for R450 000, and races in the colours of Peter Dimakogiannis. The plain dark bay gelding has earned R544 525 in 18 career starts, with five wins and five places.

Gypsy Queen is a full sister to SA Oaks winners Royal Prophecy and Noble Destiny.

The daughter of Royal Chalice and Sara’s Warning was voted KZN Breeders Broodmare Of The Year, and she has been an incredible asset to Rathmor Stud.

She is 22 years old and looks an absolute picture at her age, and the very exciting news from last season is that she foaled a Noble Tune filly. The mare is back in foal to Noble Tune again this season.

She has produced six winners including Gr2 winner Surabi (the dam of Sundari), Gypsy’s Warning and Stakes Placed Gypsy Madonna, the former a resident of Varsfontein Stud.

Gypsy’s Warning stands at stud in America and has produced a winner from her first foal, a Street Cry filly who raced in Ireland named Know. Gypsy’s Warning has progeny on the ground by Animal Kingdom.

Congratulations to Rathmor Stud and the winning connections!
